Without giving anything away
I can say it's by the sea
It's a house that used to be
The home of a friend of mine
Without giving anything away
You'll find ships inside of bottles
And the garden's overgrown
The house is white but the paint is coming off

I didn't know if you wanted to
When I came to pick you up
You didn't even hesitate
And now you and me are on our way
I think I've brought everything we need
Don't look back, don't think of the
Other places you should have been
It's a good thing that you came along with me

Gold in the air of summer
You'll shine like gold in the air of summer
You'll shine like gold in the air of summer
You'll shine like gold in the air of summer

General Comment:I know, I'm late but I just discovered this song in 2013. It struck me as a beautiful song so I downloaded it and listened over and over. Last week I had a very close family member pass away and now listening to this song is so different for me. To me, it seems as though someone is describing "their heaven" in the beginning of the song. "Without giving anything away I can say it’s by the sea" I think of the sky! Later on in the song I feel like God is speaking to the person "I didn’t know if you wanted to but I came to pick you up, you didn’t even hesitate and now you and me are on our way. I think I bought everything we need, don’t look back don’t think of the other places you should have been, It’s a good thing that you came along with me." I know everyone interprets song in different ways because I sure did when I first listened but now it’s like a totally new song :)

General Comment:I find the singer to be ironic. He keeps repeating "without giving anything away" and then procedes to descibe the details with vivid imagery in a way that we reveals to us, and the girl, exactly where he's bringing her. It's almost like saying "well, I probably shouldn't be telling you this but...."

I like the way his intentions unfold slowly to the listener exactly as they would to the girl. It's cute how he shows how he has considered every detail and tried to take care of everything. He wants her to be as immersed in the reverie he created as he is himself. He is romancing her, in a way "comparing her to a summer's day" and at the same time...he is immersing the listener in his reverie and romancing his audicance.

The imagery and unfolding of the song is perfect. I feel like I'm there.

General Comment:I love all the comments here - they all make sense. That song makes me feel so sad/happy/remember this moment/ all at once.

My Interpretation:Could the girl in the song (and the singer) have been friends for a while, and this is that first step towards coupledom? It sounds like hesitation and nervousness about how much this will change their relationship, but it will be a good thing.

General Comment:To me this song is about running away with the person i love. You can't give away where you are because they will come to find you and take you away from the beauty where you are. This beautiful house by the sea that we will run away too and live happily without having to worry about other people. I didn't know if you wanted to run away with me but you did in an instant and we both left for good together. We packed what we needed from our homes and we made the right decision. We'll be happy together here.

General Comment:More than anything else, I think that he is singing about uncertainty within their relationship. There is an underlying fear of what could happen; he suspects the worst.

He has to tell the girl not to look back, to not to regret coming with him in the first place. They're going away together on what seems like a romantic trip, but she isn't feeling it. He knows this, but would rather ignore this existing malaise and enjoy the excursion.

Note that "the house is white, but the paint is coming off." Not only are they physically going somewhere, they're also going to a new place in their relationship. This place is where what once was good (white) is slowly being removed.

General Comment:I love that first line 'Without giving anything away'. It's as if for some reason he has to keep the details secret so no-one guesses who he's talking about. It's makes it sound so real and personal. Little touches like that... you don't get them in every song.

I also get the feeling that it's the girl in the song (rather than the singer) who has come out of a break up or for whatever reason is unsure about things. That's why he thinks she won't come, and why she's worried about where she should be, and why he has to remind her 'it's a good thing that you came along with me'.

General Comment:does anyone else think they sing 'all the places she should have been'? if that is the case, then i think the song is about starting a new relationship after a recent break up. sounds to me like they're going away, trying to avoid all the bad thoughts after such a harsh decision (breaking up -- "don't think of it, don't think of all the places she should have been"). and now he's with someone else, telling himself to feel ok and move on.

even if that's not the case, i prefer it this way..

General Comment:Well done for some excellent analysis, especially Fordie. For me, this is about those first tentative days of a relationship before you've made love. I once surpirse a girlfriend by taking her somewhere special for the weekend. I knew that if she agreed to go, that she felt the same way about me and we would take our relationship to the next level. When I told her I had a surprise, I could hardly contain myself and I wanted to blurt out all the secret and ruin the surprise.

When KOC sing, "without giving anything away, I can say its by the sea" it reminds me of the excitement I felt as I almost ruined my surprise.

For anyone who goes to Norway, especially the west coast, you'll see many summer homes with white wooden walls that peel in the elements. They are normally closed up between September and May and the gardens grow wild in the winter. When you open up the houses in the spring and emerge from a long winter of darkness, its a very powerful feeling. The open window shutters in the sun make the dust shine like gold in the air. The house inthe song is a real place, but embodies the pathos of a special moment. I can see no finer metaphor for opening up to a new love in a secret place.

If I had my time again, I would love to take someone to a white Noregian summer house, a place we could open for the summer and where we could be alone and make love for the first time

General Comment:Fordie really hit the nail for what I was going to say. For me personally, my grandmother asked if I wanted to take a friend out to celebrate my coming graduation and I had a very small list but no one really seemed the type to have around my grandmother. I had my very best friend on that list but I didn't think she would want to go along with it so I didn't ask until two days before. She immediately said yes. We didn't know what was going to happen and she was planning on hanging out with her b/f that day but he had to work luckily and my grandmother had to run back home to pack for a trip she was taking so we sat in some grass and talked for hours until fireworks started going off. (there was a carnival in her neighbourhood) Then another hour later I had to go back home.

So this song really sums up that day, as KoC does all the time. There was no telling what we were getting ourselves into but it ended up bringing us even closer together. She kind of ignored her obligations for the day to hang out with me and instead of gold in the air there was gunpowder :)
