Lyrics for Your Ex-Lover Is Dead as interpreted by Ukobach

Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Lyrics
God, that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
In that instant it started to pour

Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of that time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name

This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
You tried to reach deep but you never got in
And now you're outside me, you see all the beauty
Repent all your sin

Nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love

Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back

There's one thing I have to say so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

I think this song is about two people who had a spark between them but one party was too scared, or for some other reason unable, to express their true feelings.

I think that the song is what happens when you break up with someone.. and you see them after awhile and they moved on so completely that they have to "try to remember your name."
It's basically a break up song, at least to me...

To me this song seems as if in a former relationship the two were involved but regardless of how much he cared about her, she was undecided and couldn't love him back in the same way. They meet again as if they were strangers, although they both remember their past together. I think the inability to remember the name part is moreso saying that he's over it, although he feels as if she thinks it still affects him. "This scar is a flec on my porcelaine skin" means that he'll always remember the way she hurt him, but he's saying he doesn't regret it, and the "house down the road with real love" seems to signify that he's found a person with whom he's fallen in love with and from whom he recieves what he needs.

I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

that sums up the end of a relationship so perfectly.
lovesit.

" i think this song is about when your young you fall in love with a person && you two break up"

I could copy and paste that, and I'd have a comment for every song on songmeanings, just like everyone else.

Awesome song, by the way. I love it.

what a touching song!

the irony, the awkwardness, the longing. here are two people who have shared something only they will know, something indescribable, but however strongt hat flame burned, it has since burned out. Now they return to the ash heap, with all their emotional baggage in tow. this song, above all else, is about the irrepairable gulf that now stands between the two of them. it's why despite being in the same taxi, they can't bring themselves to say a word to each other. all their emotions bubbling up, searingly reminding them of what once was.

in the end, they're happy to be without the other.

how lovely.

"...an exquisitely warm brass section helps tell a call-and-response story of half-regret, of seeing someone you once fucked at a party, knowing they never hurt you the way they could've, and feeling awkward, hateful and oddly wistful about it."

If you've ever had the experience of randomly running into someone with whom you once had a brief, maybe sexual, but nonetheless wonderful relationship, this song captures the feeling. There's some bitterness, nostalgia, happiness. You are happy to have had what you had, but are glad that it was what it was and nothing more.

I love the line "Live through this and you won't look back" It very much shows that these two young former lovers were on the verge of a relationship before it all came to a crashing halt. Now maybe years later they are reunited one more time, and are trying to make it through the evening without the old flame rekindling. I especially love how they come to grips at the end that the relationship is and forever will be dead.

There comes a time in your early twenties when you're sort of stuck between holding onto the youthful abandon of your teenage years and bracing yourself for the accountability of the real world. The people you meet in this time tend to be people that you cling to for dear life, and when a relationship forged in that time falls apart, it hurts more than any other before it, but you move on. In this song, she is able to be accountable, while he is not, and even though I get the feeling that HeE broke ties with HER years ago, she is the one who tells him off now, while he remains stunted. And while she is able to make her own choices now, she still longs for the old youthful abandon.
God what a true-to-life tune.

I live in Ottawa about 3 blocks from a bridge called 'Pont Champlain', which goes over to the Quebec side. I'm guessing this is the same bridge they're talking about in the song, becuase they're from Montreal. Unless there's a Pont Champlain in Montreal? Anyway, kinda neat.

What a beautiful song. This song makes me feel empowered. I just got my heartbroken suddenly after 3 years with the guy that I thought was the love of my life . . . These lyrics are especially powerful to me: "This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin, You tried to reach deep but you never got in" and "Nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love" and "Live through this, and you won't look back." Reminds me that in a few years this won't even matter and I'll be a stronger person for it.

i think this is a few years after a very messy break-up, wherein the age-old story of the relationship meaning more to one party than it did to the other took place. but in this case i think that all the years between the actual relationship, the person who was really in love stayed so and seeing the other person again finally broke the spell - "your ex-lover is dead," meaning the memory of the person that you're in love with no longer exists. he can't even remember your name.

Evan and Amy were briefly engaged/married during/after Heart, which is an album about love and it's much more optimistic. This album is really sad, bittersweet I'd say. This song sets the exact tone for the rest of the album. I have felt this. My next door neighboor has felt this. that feeling the capture is incredible. I agree, in the low level dynamics of the song, the story is sort of girl gets dumped, time passes, sees boy again but now the person she loved is dead, and this new person, this new skin and body that looks like that person, can't even remember your name. But that's fine, she found real love, someone who actually got inside, reached deep and loved her. He didn't and so, she stands there, majestically, thinking "you only saw beauty outside of me...you pig...Repent all your sin!" and "I'll send you a postcard from the house down the way...from REAL love!" but at the same time she's sad and still hurt. She'll never get over it. We never do; that's why we are humans. I think this album is alot like MountainGoat's "Tallahassee" in terms of the themes. It's an album about the eventual downfall and reconstruction of love in a couple. These are albums to live through the winter and emerge in the snow. Jesus, music is amazing.
More importantly, these albums (and Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Clap Your Hands, Death Cab, Bloc Party, Broken Social Scene, Neutral Milk Hotel) feel like what our generation is. They say on the official website that "Stars went into a cabin and smoked and drank and set themselves on fire, and when they emerged"...our generation is the generation of spiritual immolation, of chemical inbalances, Prozac/Zoloft/Ritalin/Adderall/Alcohol, all of that medication we have ingested. these bands represent musically what we are. they are the music of our generation.

I figure, this song is about a couple that had a one night stand that met again in an unrelated circumstance. There was never nothing deep between them, and thats why theres noting to save.
