“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I think that what makes this song so absolutely heart breaking is that it is so simple. No fancy metaphors or anything like that. The bit that gets me is the last part:
"But I don't want you thinking I don't get asked to dinner 'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do Even though I may soon feel the touch of love I just don't think I'll ever get over you If I lived 'til I was 102 I just don't think I'll ever get over you"
Anyone who has ever been truly in love will understand this completely.
I don't think this is a love song in the traditional sense but he is lamenting about the loss of his love, alcohol. He's getting sober, soberly.
@jonbowen it is about that. But it's so good and melancholy that it can be interpreted in so many forms. A love lost for example. Which for him was alcohol
gorgeous song about someone who is deeply in love, but the other person is gone in one way or the other...
...it's so sad, and sweet. It's clearly about someone who has lost somebody they were in love with and...well, the title kind of says it all. It could be losing someone because they died, or they're no longer together because of a breakup, but it doesn't really matter. It's just about losing someone you love. His life is going back to normal, he does the things he used to do, and he might even fall in love again...but no matter what, he'll never forget about that on person. Even time won't stop him. He's not bitter, he's calm and content, but always a little melancholy. It's sweet, and sad. It's honesty, plain and simple.
Well with all due respect and I know it is all up to interpretation but I think this song is about an older man who lost his wife. Not to divorce but to death.
I think of my grandpa when I hear this song. Colin Hay is a god lyrically because his songs are so personal yet they touch everyone. So bluntly personal at times that when at first you go what? but it isn't about making a song that sells its about telling the story
I think that this song is more about someone who has had their loved one die, not break up with them. It seems like maybe his wife of many years had died a while ago and he still hasn't gotten over it. It seems like hes talking to her grave in this song to me especially when he says,
"But I don't want you thinking I don't get asked to dinner 'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do"
It's sort of like he "came here" to let her know that he is doing alright but still isn't over her. It seems like this song is expressing that he is okay with never getting over her.
This is one of the best love songs ever. My take away from this song is to cling onto my wife for dear life to never get to the melancholy place of this song. When I (try to) play this song on my guitars, tears always come to my eyes.
