When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
That's where I'm gonna go when I die (when I die)
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
Oh he'll recommend you to the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die (when you die)
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best
Never been a sinner, I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up
with the spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
That's where I'm gonna go when I die (when I die)
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
That's where I'm gonna go when I die (when I die)
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
Oh he'll recommend you to the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die (when you die)
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best
Never been a sinner, I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die

Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)

When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best

This is one of those songs that can fool you if you listen too closely to the lyrics. To get the meaning of this song try to gestalt the thing. Lie back, try to experience the song rather than just listen to the words. Give it a try. What did you get? Did you get smokin' weed? Yeah, I thought so. Think about this spirit smoke imagery sort of floating up in the sky away from you, and then again, and then again with each refrain. It's like taking puffs. and blowing out little smoke clouds and watching them float up in the air. There you go. The songwriter who created this was brilliant, working in drug imagery while ostensibly writing about religion. To experience a forest, don't focus too much on individual trees. To snatch the meaning of this song don't focus too hard on the lyrics and you'll discover the true intent, smokin' weed.
Actually no - I respectfully disagree totally, HawaiiJack -
I think the song can be interpreted in a theologically straightforward manner.
It can also be spun many ways and that is part of the challenge. So quit hitting the bong and ANALYZE the message! That's what I call "snatching the meaning of the song".
It is important to focus VERY hard on the actual meaning of lyrics.
Every time.
Yup.

P.S: Jesus saves because Jesus is Lord.
You gave my way a try? Or you just stuck to a belief without challenging yourself? Asking respectfully.
I challenged myself WAY too much for WAY too long. I could write volumes about it !
Then the Holy Spirit revealed to me that I was a sinner and a rebel, that I was doomed and damned, and only Jesus was able to save me.
That was 25 years ago.
Read the Gospel of John - it's like it happened yesterday...
What makes you think you need to be saved young man? There is a place in the world for rebels. The Holy Spirit can only make you feel doom and damnation if you agree to it. Eleanor Roosevelt said that.
