Happy Jack wasn't old, but he was a man
He lived in the sand at the Isle of Man
The kids would all sing, he would take the wrong key
So they rode on his head on their furry donkey

The kids couldn't hurt Jack
They tried and tried and tried
They dropped things on his back
And lied and lied and lied and lied and lied

But they couldn't stop Jack, or the waters lapping
And they couldn't prevent Jack from feeling happy

But they couldn't stop Jack, or the waters lapping
And they couldn't prevent Jack from feeling happy

The kids couldn't hurt Jack
They tried and tried and tried
They dropped things on his back
And lied and lied and lied and lied and lied

But they couldn't stop Jack, or the waters lapping
And they couldn't prevent Jack from feeling happy

I saw ya!

    Song Meaning:==--
Jack is an old bearded bum, probably an alcoholic. The neighborhood kids fuck with him, but it doesn't bother him because his happiness is part of who he is; it's not contingent on what other people do or don't do.

Townsend's telling us we should be like that in song after song. In the whole albums Quadrophenia and Tommy (and many songs, like We Don't Get Fooled Again) he gives us the same message.

It took me decades to be like that. It always happens suddenly. Of all places, it happened to me while I was tied to a bench naked for three days in a stranger's basement.

    It's, like, Townsend's eternal theme:

    THIS
    IS
    WHO
    I
    REALLY
    AM.

General Comment:I always felt this song was about children being hurtful doing painful things to one another and telling lies to not get into trouble. It's about growing up. It's a message to children and adults that don't let anyone take away your happiness. If you come across mean people forget about them, just keep moving forward and live happily in your own world. That is what Jack is doing and just like you can never stop the waters from lapping, because they just keep going and going, then for sure you be like the waters and keep on rolling through life....

General Comment:This kid avoided peer pressure because he didn't care what others thought. He laughed at bullies and their attempts to ruin his mood. Totally secure.

General Comment:I prefer the Live at Leeds version (which is odd, since I usually hate live versions).

The only other song where I prefer the live version is Pink Floyd's Careful With that Axe, Eugene (either Ummagumma or Live in Pompeii).

General Comment:Happy Jack hasa mental illness and sees everthing as good. He also has a different perception of the world "furry donkey?" Another case of the Who having fun. Have you seen thre video with the cake?

General Comment:The story behind the "I saw ya!" is that Keith Moon was a terrible singer, but kept trying to sneak in vocals. Eventually Pete and Roger threw him out every vocal session, but he kept trying to come back to sing; it was a game between them. During "Happy Jack", Keith tried to come in, but Pete saw him and yelled "I saw ya!"

General Comment:It says in the booklet of The Who: the Ultimate Collection c.d. that when Pete Townshend yells "I saw yer" at the end, it was because Keith Moon had been kicked out of the studio they were in and he was trying to sneak back in, but Townshend saw him.
