@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

A few days ago I listened to this song about 9000 times in a row and realized that I've been in a situation almost exactly like this. He loves her so much, but the relationship just isn't working out. She won't commit. She won't call out his name, turn on her light, et cetera. He really really loves her, but she wasted his time, she wouldn't take what he could give but only wanted what he couldn't give. He wants to stay, and he wants her to be able to commit so that he can, but she won't. He says the really hard stuff in here. Even though he loves her, he's willing to tell her that she really screwed up a good thing. - I absolutely love this song. So much.
I too am in the same situation. The guy initiated that everything was going to be great and that he wanted to be with me, but when it finally came down to it, he couldn’t commit. I don’t hate him, but he did waste a good year of my life :/ And so I agree with everything you said about this song- it’s great & so true!

i looked at it today from a seperate angle when i read dylan's comments in the album's liner notes. i took "dont think twice, its alright" to be a reminder of yourself. dylan mentioned something about how sometimes its hard to get up in the morning and he visions himself saying this to himself. "everything's gonna be ok." "dont worry, dont think twice." i think the whole girl thing could be easily flipped into a metaphor for life and circumstance. but as moods allow it could always be a post-love song.
I love the view you have developed from this song. I feel that people are turning every song they find into a metaphor for a love situation. Even though this song stresses the fact that there is a girl involved, Its lovely to read about a view bigger than the girl. That this could very well be about a relationship but its about how he's choosing to go around it - to not think twice because he feels that it will be alright.
I think two lines in this song can sum up all the feelings of resentment felt by anyone and everyone who has every listened with their heart and not just their ears. These two lines also portray how (I think) Dylan truly feels about the situation which lead him to write this song and how he is going to handle it / move on.

The first line is pretty straight forward and self explanatory, he doesn't want to use the word "goodbye" because that would be a wrongful and misleading word to sum up their relationship (Dylan and Suze). Mainly because the fact that there was never any true "good" intentions of Suze leaving, I feel as though she always knew she would stay in Italy indefinitely. And then the second line is pure genius - "So I'll just say fare thee well". "Fare thee well" sounds almost exactly like "fairly well" and there is no doubt in my mind that the creative genius who is Dylan, did not do this on accident. That line was meant to sum up in a whole what those two had. It could have been "good" but it turned out to be "fairly well". "Fairly well" is also a synonym for "all right" which is how Dylan thinks of how things will turn out --> not good, not bad...just all right.
This song is about the true reality of lost love, with little hints hidden here and there about what could have been. Pure genius.

among others definetely support that case. In the first lines I quoted, he's basically saying that she doesn't even deserve to be told good bye; thus he only states fare thee well, a lesser farewell statement. In the second set of quoted lines he's basically saying she was unkind (even to an extent if you consider the meaning literal) and then goes on to say she wasted his time. A wasting of time isn't something to be taken lightly, it's a serious attack on their relationship.
I definetely think this is a bitter break-up between Dylan and his ex, and that she was mainly in the wrong.
I agree with the breakup idea as well but also have another theory. For me it sounds like he loves someone who didn't love him back, maybe a friend who wouldn't know what they could have got before it was too late.
