Pink – Who Knew Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Pink's close friend Sekou Harris died of a heroin overdose when they were only 14. The tragedy inspired Pink’s 2006 song, “Who Knew.” source: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/singer-pink-save-best-friend-drug-addiction-article-1.1341547 Pink in the London Daily Mail May 26th 2006 said this song is about losing a loved one to drugs: "My life was insane, I was (in her youth) out of control and doing lots of stupid things. Some of my friends were selling crack, and I got into drugs too. I've always been honest about that, although I don't like going into details. I've got lots of young fans and I wouldn't want to give them any ideas. I found a friend dead from a drug overdose when I was 14. He was a male friend, not a boyfriend. Most of the people at the funeral were just children. It should have been a wake-up call for me, but it wasn't." According to Pink, the song is about "the grieving process. You can look at somebody, he might be right there, and the next Monday he might not be." |
Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics | 8 years ago |
On March 25, 1996 Tracy Chapman said: "I believe that I wrote the song "Fast Car" in 1986. At the time that I wrote the song, I actually didn't really know who I was writing about. Looking back at it, and this happens with other songs as well, that I feel like I understand it only later... I think that it was a song about my parents... And about how when they met each other they were very young and they wanted to start a news life together and my mother was anxious to leave home. My parents got married and went out into the world to try to make a place for themselves and it was very difficult going. My mother didn't have a high school diploma and my father was a few years older. It was hard for him to create the kind of life that he dreamed of... With the education that he had.... With the opportuinities that were available to him... In a sense I think they came together thinking that together they would have a better chance at making it" I had so many people come up to me and say that they felt it was their song and some one told me at one point that they thought I've been reading their mail, they were saying "You seem to know my story" and people would come up and tell me about a car relationship and some detail that they felt was in the song that represented something that happened in their lives." |
Fleetwood Mac – Landslide Lyrics | 8 years ago |
The story of Landslide... everybody seems to think that I wrote this song about them. Everybody in my family, all my friends, everybody... and my Dad, my Dad did have something to do with it, but he absolutely thinks that he was the whole complete reason it was ever written. I guess it was about September 1974, I was home at my Dad and Mom's house in Phoenix, and my father said, 'you know, I think that maybe... you really put a lot of time into this [her singing career], maybe you should give this six more months, and if you want to go back to school, we'll pay for it and uh, basically you can do whatever you want and we'll pay for it ~ I have wonderful parents ~ and I went, 'cool, I can do that.' [Then] Lindsey and I went up to Aspen, and we went to somebody's incredible house, and they had a piano, and I had my guitar with me, and I went into their living room, looking out over the incredible, like, Aspen skyway, and I wrote Landslide...three months later, Mick Fleetwood called. On New Year's Eve, 1974, called and asked us to join Fleetwood Mac. So it was three months, I still had three more months to go to beat my six month goal that my dad gave me. So that's what Landslide is about. ~Stevie Nicks, VH1 Storytellers, 1998 |
Adele – When We Were Young Lyrics | 8 years ago |
In an interview with SiriusXM Music, Adele explains that the song is set at a party. Everyone there knew each other when they were younger, and now they’re all over fifty. Everyone one that you've ever loved, everyone you've never loved and how you can't find time to keep up as life goes on. They’ve been placed in this party where they get to congregate and catch up and meet again after many years and none of the other stuff matters and you feel like you're 15 again. https://soundcloud.com/siriusxmmusic/adele-town-hall-on-writting-when-we-were-young |

Milky Chance – Stolen Dance Lyrics | 9 years ago |
“It took me three years to write the song,” admits Clemens Rehbein, the vocalist-guitarist and big-haired half of the duo, which also includes DJ Philipp Dausch. Explaining the song's meaning, Rehbein says in a video interview, “It’s basically about missing a person and yearning for some love. (It’s) about heartaches but also about hope and looking forward to seeing better times.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCNWzRBKRB8 |
Billy Joel – The Downeaster 'Alexa' Lyrics | 9 years ago |
The song is sung in the persona of an impoverished fisherman off Long Island and the surrounding waters who, like many of his fellow men, is finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet and keep ownership of his boat.[2] The fisherman sings about the depletion of the fish stocks ("I know there's fish out there, but where God only knows") and the environmental regulations ("Since they told me I can't sell no stripers") which make it hard for men like him to survive, especially with the conversion of his home island into an expensive summer colony for the affluent ("There ain't no Island left for Islanders like me"). The lyrics reference Block Island Sound, Montauk, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Gardiners Bay, amongst other locations. While the song is about a fictional person, it decries the plight of the Long Island Baymen (known locally as Bubbies). The Baymen represent a dying breed of people who, like farmers, work the environment to provide for their families. Honorable men and women being forced out of their livelihoods as much by the creep of urban society and government regulation as the decline of fish stocks. Billy was always sympathetic to the hard working men who worked the sea, even getting arrested during a protest supporting the Baymen. At one point Billy had underwritten a plan by his young boat captain to use his boat (Alexa Ray, a 46' custom downeaster) as a commercial operation. As the two developed the plan, it became increasingly clear that the challenges facing a small commercial operation were greater than he had imagined. The idea was scrapped. It was not long after that this song came together. Alexa is the name of Billy Joel's daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. The Alexa was Newman 46 fiberglass hull custom finished by Lee S. Wilbur and Co of Manset Me. [3] The hull was based on the Maine lobster boats known as a "downeaster," which should not be confused with the pleasure craft built by the Downeaster company.[4] |

can't believe no comments on this one! awesome song..pretty self explanatory meaning |
Marc Cohn – Live Out the String Lyrics | 13 years ago |
There's no question to me this song was written after he survived being shot in the head after a carjacking attempt on his van on the way back from a show. It was a miracle that the bullet did not penetrate his skull. It's about him realizing how lucky he was to still be living and appreciating life and living it to it's fullest. It makes you realize sometimes how lucky we are to just be living every day |

Marc Cohn – The Things We've Handed Down Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is was written when his wife was pregnant. his wife had a miscarriage with their first child, so i'm not sure if the lines "Will you be a sad reminder Of what's been lost along the way Maybe you can help me find her In the things you do and say " reference that or the loss of marc's own mother. |
Say Anything – Do Better Lyrics | 14 years ago |
according to max himself: "This is a song I wrote later on in the writing process. It's about the recognition that we live in a flawed society. I wrote the lyrics first. They were a criticism about myself and, like, this really negative song. What I realized when I finally finished the lyrics is that I had overcome a lot of the things that I was making fun of about myself, and that to write a song about those things would be a novelty or sort of typical Say Anything act--to make a negative, self-deprecating song. So my goal was to write a positive, uplifting song, but still have it be very "Say Anything." It's about the ability every human being has to fulfill his or her potential. It doesn't mean we can all be godlike, but we can do better than how we tend to do. Once you realize that, you have a lot more options open to you as a human being." |

Weezer – Heart Songs Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is one of my fav. songs on the red album. I have a different take on it....i just see it as him singing about the music that he knows he can put on and enjoy every day and although he's heard those songs a million times, they still inspire him. they're like timeless classics. towards the end of the song it's like he feels a sense of accomplishment knowing that he has now made songs that have become other people's "heart songs". |

New Found Glory – It's Not Your Fault Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i take it to mean something different. i see it as a song from a guy to a girl. the two fall in love but the girl seems to want to get married and he's feels like things are moving way too fast. it scares him and is the downfall of the relationship. "There were rapid statements About life commitments A sense of heat that I couldn't bear to touch" basically like i said they haven't been going out that long and he can't stand the heat. the relationship is moving too fast for him. i think he does love her in a way. but they moved to fast and now it just won't work. JMO |
Toby Keith – I Wanna Talk About Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
basically this is a song to your girl. some guys can relate i guess. basically he's talking about always listening to his girl's problems and issues and feels like he can't get a word in. it's all said in jest from my point of view. but i like it. this is personally one of my faves...because i can relate in a joking way. |
Paul Simon – The Boxer Lyrics | 17 years ago |
apparently it was originally written with another verse listed below. anyhow...great song i'm surprised there aren't more comments. "Now the years are rolling by me They are rocking evenly I am older than I once was Younger than I'll be, that's not unusual. No, it isn't strange After changes upon changes We are more or less the same After changes we are more or less the same" |

Say Anything – Alive with the Glory Of Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
momentum why does it sadden you that a wider range of people were able to enjoy say anything's music? when I was younger I had the same sort of attitude and hated when bands i liked got on to mtv. now I don't mind. the only thing that bothers me is if a band changes the type of music it plays solely to become more commercial, but if more people begin to appreciate the music they're already playing what's wrong with that? |
Say Anything – Sure, Baby... Hold Back Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think he's talking about a song that reminds him of her. basically he's saying "like it helps when the music dies", in other words, the song will die/stop playing but the thoughts it stirs don't go away just because the song is over. that's my interpretation at least. |
Say Anything – Thoughts on a Liberal Education Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I actually think it's about a girl he loved in high school. He goes away to college and does the college thing to forget about her. He goes away and parties, tries to focus on school and his new life "and how hard he tried" to silence her. I think this is him saying he's finally getting over her. Streetlight Manifesto – Walking Away Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I kinda liked the old catch version where the bass line was a little more heavily emphasized. |
Say Anything – Signal The Riflemen Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i love this song. i interpret it as being a song with him talking to a girl he likes and he's trying to tell her you don't have to be stuck to a traditional life and you can go out and do what you're passionate about. just what i take from it. |
Say Anything – All Choked Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
awesome song. i take it to be about a girl that he always acted kinda "too cool" towards, they were probably good friends. "All that I want is to show you how you you're nothing like all of them tell you. To be more than just a cricket on your shoulder A little closer" basically he got into that friend loop of giving advice and being there. now he wants to be more. i'm sure there may be more. I love his writing style and the piano. I can definately see some of the queen influence in his music with the piano and some of his more theatrical songs. |

awesome song. any thoughts on who he's writing the song to? |
Say Anything – Admit It!!! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think the song is very well written. you can interpret it a bunch of different ways. to me the song sort of mocks people who try too hard to be different. it's ironic how so many of them wind up being the same. a true individual will wear what they like. who cares if other people are wearing a certain thing, or have a certain taste in music or literature. if you enjoy it... listen to it, read it, wear it. eventually the trendy people will move on to the next trend. i find it ironic when people change the things they listen to because suddenly other people start listening to it. isn't that sort of making you a slave to other people's opinions? |

Nine Days – Absolutely (Story Of A Girl) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
In an interview with MTV, John Hampson, the frontman for the band said this in regards to what the song was about: "It's actually kind of funny," Hampson said."[We were] doing a show on Long Island. It was an outdoor show, and there was a big deck that we were playing on, and we got there really early for sound check. I was there with my girlfriend, and as typical, we were annoying each other. "She's just aggravating me, so she walked [away] and started talking to somebody on the side of the club. So I'm just sitting there, and I was literally thinking to myself, 'Man, she drives me nuts. She totally drives me crazy.' But as I was thinking this, I was watching her, just looking at her, and she was having a conversation with someone and just started laughing. "And I swear I thought to myself, 'Y'know, she totally drives me crazy, but I absolutely love her when she's happy, when she's smiling," Hampson continued. "I don't know what happened, but it just came out of my head. I started singing that chorus, and I kind of picked up the guitar, and the song kind of wrote itself. Pretty much ten minutes later, it was done. It was one of those things." |

I agree with the last comment. It also draws out the irony, how when you're 15 you're "counting the ways to where you are" meaning you can't wait to get older, but when you're 99 you do the same, except you only wish you could be young again. |
Ben Harper – Forever Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I see Diaspora women and Diaspora men There are people who are not going to make it because they will sleep with the fishes They lost their knowledge just like a priest without religion Diaspora do not respect Diaspora If you are a Diaspora I am going to give you to sharks Diaspora do not respect Diaspora If you are a Diaspora tonight were going to disarm you Port-au-Prince do not respect Diaspora again Men Flatbush do not respect Diaspora Men Canada do not respect Diaspora Men Miami do not respect Diaspora Pa Kayos do not respect diaspora Papa Djoume do not respect Diaspora Refugees do not respect Diaspora Men Florida do not respect Diaspora Wrong things done are going to finish worse If you disrespect native-born Done wrong things are going to finish worse Disrespect Haitians you will get hit... Paul Simon – Homeward Bound Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Paul Simon – Kodachrome Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I always took mamma as being his girl. He's telling her not to take his kodachrome, metaphorically his good thoughts of her. As he states in the 2nd verse, he knows once things go sour, he'll never look back at her as fondly as he looks at her now. The first verse seems to me to be saying something more like, "hey i might not be a genius, but i think i can see when things are going to shit". IMO he basically equates kodachrome to love or the though of being in love. When you're in love, it makes you think all the world is a sunny day. He wants to take a picture to try to capture that moment and those good feelings. |
