P.S. Eliot – Troubled Medium Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Perfect album closer. |
Ween – Captain Fantasy Lyrics | 9 years ago |
Sounds like a tribute to Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" in both tone and lyrics |
Max Tundra – Acorns Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Regarding the terrific and tragically short-lived band, The Monsoon Bassoon. |
Kate Bush – Hounds of Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |
To be fair, a poor man's XTC is still a pretty damn good band! |
The Books – All Our Base Are Belong To Them Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Those lyrics look pretty good to me, rhyserpeacer. I disagree, though, that the samples shouldn't be listed. There are plenty of songs, by the Books and others, that choose to make their statements through a series of edited samples rather than re-writing and re-stating them. The words in the samples may just be incidental--maybe they were only used because they sounded nice--but they can also just as easily be as important to the song as any sung lyrics. |
The Books – Group Autogenics II Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Whoops, typo on my part. Good catch, thanks! |
The Books – Free Translator Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I wonder what 'very well known folk song' this is based off of. My first inclination was "Blowin' in the Wind", based mostly off the first couple lines, but beyond that it falls apart pretty fast. Pointless speculation, hooraaayy! |
They Might Be Giants – Out of Jail Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This has to be one of the most underrated TMBG songs of all time. What a great little tune this is. |
The Books – All You Need Is A Wall Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Whoops, sorry for the double post back there. I don't hear "so it is" either, but given their usual attention to detail, I'd be more surprised that they'd have such a glaring error in the notes, than if the "so it is" was just extremely quiet/subtle or something. It would also provide some nice foreshadowing to the end of Group Autogenics II ("and so it is, and so it is"). |
The Books – Free Translator Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Couple tiny corrections to this gorgeous, gorgeous song. The hold-out boy and the weather girl know the wind moves in a patient way... The man in the mouth of a drain... Your knee-jerks a mark of distinction... Write in relief, and sleep again... And a mote in the sun... |
The Books – Chain of Missing Links Lyrics | 14 years ago |
You left out the CRUCIAL final two words! "Realize for a moment that the average human being only uses about five percent of their brain; the other 95 percent is available for food." :) |
The Books – We Bought The Flood Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Liner notes say: --------------- I was born with a teacup on my head, Copper tin and lead, ash and dust. Sky color: Indiana Red, Like Kansas, Oklahoma, plus a thousand years of rust. Examine it carefully before it's set ablaze, Take it all in before it's gone, gone, gone. Let's notice everything, I mean every grain of salt. Let's be thorough to a fault and next time we'll build it twice as strong. And all of this will disappear as quickly as it came, The fire and the rain oxidize and rearrange Focus on the pain, Focus on the way to get out. Virginia, 1902. There was nothing we could do, cracked bell fell off a train, Slow walking down Cedar Avenue, I came to find you, I came to feel urbane. No more speed, no more direction, No more push and pull, and no more lessons, Save it for the afterlife, don't want to hear your confessions, It's the hammer walking, then it's the hammer down. And all of this will disappear as quickly as it came, The fire and the rain oxidize and rearrange Focus on the pain, Focus on the way to get out. |
The Books – All You Need Is A Wall Lyrics | 14 years ago |
A few minor corrections/additions from the CD liner notes: ----------------------- So it is. yeah... and if it's a wall, then you should cast a shadow. or maybe possibly, it's a thought you think is true, when you appear to be: belief, belief. I never loved a wall so much. hey yeah... asleep in a chair, where the two go click. Look at the floor, flat pattern order. oh, it's the great power one receives from a very modest source, oh, and you don't feel a thing, when you drink from the springs of living water. |

The Lovely Feathers – In the Valley Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is so goddamn catchy. |
Max Tundra – Number Our Days Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The lyrics as printed in the liner notes: Nothing happens when you die You don't leave your body or fly off into the sky The deities you count on were just made up by some guy Nothing happens when I cry Reminds me of the time I called you up to say goodbye A pint of chicken soup comes falling from my eye It's a winsome isolation I declare Your engineering knocks me out of my chair If mechanicals observed are what we are Then number our days and point me to the car Nothing happens by degrees Your furtive semaphore is hidden by the trees My predecessor always said you were a tease Nothing happens every year I scare a few more people off by saying "dear" What is it about my companionship you fear? Every sentimental minute in your hands Fills your Januaries with my plans This is why we leave our ancestors alone So number our days and lead me to the stone |
Oceansize – Unfamiliar Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Wow, great work, Arkyopterix. Agreed that this song is fantastic, and your interpretation seems to make sense. |
The Fiery Furnaces – Japanese Slippers Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The lyrics according to the liner notes in the album are slightly different from what you have: Down at the shell shed the boys are pickin' at their pearls. The hole in my mitten lets the rain get in. I bought 22 ounces from the petrol park, waiting at the light; I'm never gonna make it back in time So Geraldine and me can begin Before Mister Raymond and his Japanese slippers comes creepin' in. I sit with the fan on my face and sip shandies all day. I learned to sleep standing up so I don't have to make the bed. No tobacco for my rolling papers, warm water in my cup-- I'll have to wait all morning Before Geraldine and me can begin; Before Mister Raymond and his Japanese slippers'll come creepin' in. Loaded up with turkey carpets and green glass diamonds I drove back and forth for five long rolling moons. And everyday and every night I thought of back at home And I couldn't get the notion out of my head: That before Geraldine and me could begin Mister Raymond and his Japanese slippers'd come creepin' in. Everything is always a little late; Trippin' on those Japanese slippers seems to be my fate. It was my job to cut down all the poplar trees And I'd sit on the stumps and listen to the finches. And look out at the field and eat honey out of the jar And wonder why it always seemed Before Geraldine and me can begin Mister Raymond and his Japanese slippers would come creepin' in. |
The Fiery Furnaces – The Philadelphia Grand Jury Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Two tiny corrections: it's "make sure Mom don't look at the _news_", and it should be "more crooked sons of bitches you can't ever _have_ come across." Sorry, I have OCD when it comes to this stuff :) |
Pixies – Winterlong Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Thedon45: The original is by Neil Young, not Neil Diamond. Please never, ever make that mistake again. It makes anyone who likes music very sad. |
They Might Be Giants – Hell Hotel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
According to tmbw.net, the first line is Salutations, pain is karma, bent joints in fighting words But for some reason songmeanings won't let me edit this page. So whatever. |
Shugo Tokumaru – Mushina Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Oops -- this is still the English translation. Sorry for the dupe. |
The New Pornographers – Broken Breads Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Dan Bejar is a magnificent bastard. |
Dan Deacon – Wham City Lyrics | 17 years ago |
According to lyric sheets handed out at one of his shows... ( http://farm1.static.flickr.com/230/499525519_1cd771db03.jpg?v=1179238005 ) Correct lyrics should be There is a mountain of snow Up past the big glen * and Sweet cakes maste lakes * |
Dan Deacon – Wham City Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'd be annoyed by the rhyming of "bats" with "bats" if this wasn't a fucking incredible song. |
Lightning Bolt – Dead Cowboy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The latter half of this song is epic as hell |
Andrew Bird – Armchairs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Armchairs" does seem to be the final title of the song, though the album itself is still Armchair Apocrypha. Anyway, wow. One of his best. |
Cardiacs – I'm Eating in Bed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Thanks much! Everything I submitted here is from the Cardiacs Lyrics Organ, if you have any corrections it might be worthwhile to email them (though it seems they haven't updated in some time): http://www.dept74.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/lyrics_organ/index.html |
Deerhoof – Vivid Cheek Love Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sorry, technically that should be RE-animated corpse. |
Deerhoof – Vivid Cheek Love Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It also mentions magic several times, and as the more astute among us know, Eisenhower was one of three warlocks who have also been US Presidents. (The other two were Theodore Roosevelt and the animated corpse of Grover Cleveland.) |
Guided by Voices – Tractor Rape Chain (Clean It Up) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
You're not alone--this is my favorite song from my favorite album of theirs. |
My Morning Jacket – I Will Sing You Songs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is incredible live. |
Nomeansno – Mondo Nihilissimo 2000 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm not sure on some of the lines here, but I just had to add this song :) |
This Heat – S.P.Q.R Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is fucking badass |
The Knife – One Hit Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is wonderful. ...That's all I have to say. |
Dog Police – Dog Police Lyrics | 18 years ago |
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0359hSerDeE |
Deerhoof – Vivid Cheek Love Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh, obviously. It's so blatant it's almost not even worth mentioning here. |
Wilco – Spiders (Kidsmoke) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The studio version of this song sucks, they sucked all the life out of it. This _has_ to be heard live; it ended up being the best track on Kicking Television, even. |
Nomeansno – Dad Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is fucking intense. The last line is a great touch though |
They Might Be Giants – Thunderbird Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Older live versions also had a section taken out: "They devised a plan They would melt a man And they called it 'Thunderbird'" It kind of gave the song a darker, more... sinister edge. If TMBG can ever be remotely sinister. |
Sufjan Stevens – Year of Our Lord Lyrics | 18 years ago |
What is the point of adding instrumentals to a lyrics site? |
Cardiacs – Dog-Like Sparky Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I certainly can't divine any meaning from them whatsoever. |
The Fiery Furnaces – Chris Michaels Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is easily the best song the Furnaces have ever done and I wish Rehearsing My Choir and Bitter Tea had more songs like it. :/ |
The Fiery Furnaces – The Garfield El Lyrics | 18 years ago |
FASTER HAMMERS FASTER HAMMERS |
The Fiery Furnaces – Blueberry Boat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I like the idea that she's so proud of her role as captain and of her homegrown blueberries that she goes down with them, even though blueberries obviously aren't as valuable as gold or many, many other things. I'm surprised there aren't more comments in general for the Furnaces. So many of their songs tell great little stories like this. |
Boredoms – Acid Police Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I shine, you shine... |
Frog Eyes – The Oscillator's Hum Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I have no idea what this song is about, but I am pleasantly surprised that "Oh lord, I ate a billion cakes" is apparently the actual line. That's what I thought it sounded like but I didn't think that could actually be what he was saying. |
Mclusky – Gareth Brown Says Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The opening line does indeed kick ass. Something tells me that this song is less about the internet and more about people who make up stories about themselves in general. In real life. |
Harvey Danger – Little Round Mirrors Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Eh, that's what you get for copy & pasting from somewhere else. :/ Anyway I'd just like to say this might be one of the best songs HD have ever done. It's that damn good. |
Deerhoof – Siriustar Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't know if this is about wolves, or a werewolf, or what, but it's the best god damn song Deerhoof has ever done. |
