Band of Horses – Detlef Schrempf Lyrics 13 years ago
And, best lyrics in the song that I think support my interpretation:

So take it as a song or a lesson to learn
And sometime soon be better than you were
If you say you're gonna go, then be careful
And watch how you treat every living soul

Band of Horses – Detlef Schrempf Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about someone who has tainted their reputation in a town / group and the damage they have done to their character is irreversible. The song suggests that their words can only do more harm to the situation. It would be best for the person to just leave the town, as at this point "eyes can't look at [them] any other way", the town judges the person in a most simplistic (minimal) way, and may not be able to see the depth to the situation. The person could just leave the situation / town / group, but sometimes it's not as easy as it seems it should be. And the singer questions the person, if they do leave, "but what's it going to cost to be gone?" (emotionally, relationship ties, etc). That's my perspective on this one. Beautiful song.

Sara Bareilles – The Light Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it could be interpreted as a religious song with a spiritual undertone to it, but with "babe gonna look in your eyes" I think she's signing about the beginning of a relationship, trusting that they'll take care of her heart, and hoping for happy times (the light). Beautifulll heartfelt song.

Sara Bareilles – Uncharted Lyrics 13 years ago
Love it. he has said this is the cornerstone song around which the others on the new album were created.

I think it's about her trying to find inspiration to write her second album -- initially feeling a bit intimidated by the pressure with creating another 'hit', and then letting go of the pressure and starting to work on what felt right according to her gut.

"Jump start my kaleidoscope heart
Love to watch the colors fade
They may not make sense but they sure as hell made me"

"Compare where you are to where you want to be and you'll get no where"

"I'm already out of foolproof ideas
So don't ask me how to get started
It's all uncharted"

A Fine Frenzy – Electric Twist Lyrics 14 years ago
I've always thought this song is a metaphor for the record industry. Kind of like Sara Bareille's "Love Song". It's funny because this song is so different from her typical material.. more upbeat / "wild"..and the whole "don't think don't talk".. though she's okay with the change. "It's a risk, but is kicks." I don't know, just another way of looking at it.

Owl City – The Saltwater Room Lyrics 14 years ago
My opinion: it's about blossoming love. :)

Things feel like 'home' when they are together, but when they separate (are "apart") home, in the literal sense, feels alone. He is still nervous because he recognizes the potential for love...and it's "only time" until they do (they say this together in the song which leads me to believe that it represents they both feel this way). "To my motion fatigue: farewell", represents saying goodbye to the tiring run-around search for love. "All my islands have sunk in the deep and I can hardly relax of even oversleep" -- no longer wanting to be alone and instead having someone 'there' who occupies your thoughts. "Time together is never quite enough", "I guess we'll never understand why sparrows love the snow we'll turn off all the lights and set this ballroom aglow".. wanting to spend every moment together, and some like it cold (sparrows), but they'll never understand why because they like it hot. ;)

Mae – Night/Day Lyrics 14 years ago
Actually I take back my comment a little bit--I like the direction they're going in with several of their new songs on this album. I just wish songs like "Boomerang" wouldn't make the cut (maybe b-side).

Mae – Night/Day Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is a good example of how their music can evolve in a different style while still maintaining their original sound and insightful lyrics which make them truly awesome. Unfortunately many of the other songs on this album feel like a complete departure from this. And I agree with the others about the meaning of this song.

A Fine Frenzy – Swan Song Lyrics 14 years ago
I'll be the first to comment on this beautiful song. I think she's talking about compromising and / or giving up something that was very valuable to her. At the time it was happening it seemed perfect, beautiful and right, but in hindsight she "regrets it". Love how she uses the analogy of a "swan song" to describe this!

Michelle Branch – This Way Lyrics 14 years ago
My take on it is that it could be about someone in her family, like her father, though I'm not sure what her relationship is like with her family. Also about her coming into her own as an adult and realizing there may be some things she can take the blame for, other things she can explain in a more mature perspective now, but other things she can't due to how she was conditioned / nurtured as a child ("I'm not claiming I know everything because you made me this way.") Also it sounds like she had some bitterness from the past because the person didn't seem like they were on her side, and also she didn't like how the person talked to 'her' (whom I am going to assume to be her mother in this case). I don't know... could be a stretch.

Good song. :)

Mandy Moore – Merrimack River Lyrics 15 years ago
Good job Mandy Moore .. best song on the new album that really demonstrates what could be a good direction for her to move in for her own mature sound, in my opinion. I think this song is about renewal and beginnings. "Restless to begin..", "Jacarandas blooming.." (known to bloom twice a year, fall and spring), "Give me something sweet, bring me to the brink, and I'll leave without hesitation to a world without limitation", "A world that moves too fast,...by January rain will swallow, change will follow."

And also the surprise and fear that change--new beginnings--can bring. "Don't say you're not amazed..don't say you're not afraid..".

Just my interpretation of the rather-random lyrics without having much background info to go on. Wikipedia, though not sure where the info comes from, states that this song is "inspired by the actual Merrimack River, since the singer is a local to New Hampshire and was born in Nashua, NH."

Until June – The Man Who Lost His Soul Lyrics 15 years ago
Another thought is that it's the band talking about their own journey toward success in the music industry, achieving some of that success (though I still think they're largely undiscovered as a great band), but losing some of what was originally important to them in the process. And on that note, this song seems pretty different from their original style of songs, but I like it!

Maybe this is too obvious of a meaning, but it sounds like Until June are making a political statement here. Easy to say about who (G.W. Junior).

Copeland – Not Allowed Lyrics 15 years ago
I absolute love this song..can't figure out what it's about though. I don't think it's just about bottling up emotions (although maybe that's part of it?). "Turn away fallen on the inside from your sky".. cool lyrics.. but what the heck? I think it might be about having to be the stronger person for someone who is hurting, but.. not sure..

Third Eye Blind – Why Can't You Be Lyrics 15 years ago
The beginning of the current song makes me laugh, "It was an argument with an ex-girlfriend and I said something about a truest love and she said 'you're mistaken, my first true love was with a multiple-adjustable-showerhead!'..I know you follow me, but I was like..''I'm drunk!''" ... and the overall song makes me smile.. perfect in its randomness. To me this song is clearly about exes having a conversation where they have gone their separate ways.

Missy Higgins – 100 Round The Bends Lyrics 16 years ago
Only five comments? Wow. This song rocks. I don't think she's angry with herself. I think she's happy with her decision to walk away ("I want nothing more to do with all the things you made me think I am."). And the way she sings "didn't I" is almost like she's proud of her decision. I *do* agree that she's describing
'throwing caution to the wind', but she suggests doing this with the other person involved who hurt her because she's angry and doesn't care what might happen to them. This song following "Where I Stood" on the album only confirms my suspicion that she might be talking about some type of abusive relationship that was hard to walk away from.. doubted herself in the beginning.. but "learned to trust herself" in the end because she made the right decision. I don't know.. may be a stretch..

I don't hear "rain"... I hear "reign"... and I do think the undertone is about them asking God to be at the forefront in their lives when things ('hopes', 'soul', 'everything I know') seem down or out of their own control.

The Hush Sound – The Boys Are Too Refined Lyrics 16 years ago
well.. maybe she's talking about her dad not being present in her life besides as a baby ("a lullaby to his credit speak") because it sounds like he left her or isn't around anymore ("to the edge with a car - he sent it off a cliff for a spark") and she can't depend/rationalize it ("to hell with why") which is maybe her way of explaining in this song why she's afraid/not looking for a long-term relationship and just a "thrill" type of thing........ um.. yeah?

The Hush Sound – The Boys Are Too Refined Lyrics 16 years ago
Best song on the new album! All of their sounds keep their typical quirky style, but this song to me comes closest to their past work with a great difference too. Piano is lovely in this songs.

As for the meaning, pretty straight forward... besides the "to daddy singing sweet - a lullaby to his credit speak" stanza.. that throws me off a bit, but I have my theories...just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the song.

The Hush Sound – Molasses Lyrics 16 years ago
About a guy who is always complaining about trying to find a good girl, but because he's charming with good looks (made of "sugar milk and molasses") he attracts all the wrong-maybe-shallow girls (bees) who burn/sting him in the end. Even though he knows this, he still goes for these type of girls. The girl in the song is saying.. 'look.. I'm the good girl you're looking for, right in front of you', but he can't see it. "Say there's something better - you don't see it you won't find it - say there's something better - you can have it but you won't get it" -- that line about sums it up.

That's my take on it at least. Great song.

Pretty song.. I'm surprised it doesn't have more comments. Sounds a bit like Mae's *old* sound (Mae now taking a turn for the worse). I'm sticking with Waking Ashland, who has stayed closer to their original/good music.. only improving.

Fighting the pressure to change their music in order to stay true to their vision is a theme throughout the entire new CD: Money... Change... Sinking is Swimming.. and maaaybe this song too --

"You're getting love from everyone
It's not enough to save you from...
I'd burn this house if I thought it slow you down
It gets so lonely when you're living underground"

slightly Ben-Folds-ish sounding in the beginning.. interesting.

Bleh.. not a fan of Mae's new sound/lyrics at all. Their new music doesn't even come close in quality compared to their older songs. These lyrics are also frighteningly similar to Waking Ashland's "Hands on Deck".. only Waking Ashland's song is much better. Whatever. I'm disappointed.

Fair – Bide My Crime Lyrics 17 years ago
a good song by Fair, a band who really isn't recognized enough for the many good songs they have. A little confused as to the meaning...maybe he's stepping away from something that he feels is hindering him, and yet still questioning his decision with that because whatever he's stepping away from makes him feel good.

I gather that from
"What I get to see is you slipping away from me. . .
Take this mess, give it some room to rest.
Help me hide my muse, show me a clearer view.
..give me one reason why I should let this die."

Love it! If this highlights what her upcoming album is going to be like, well I just can't wait....

"Always worry of what I'd lose
Take away my record deal
Go on, I don't need it
Spent the last 2 years getting to what's real"

About staying true to her music in spite of the pressures to conform to dumb-downed pop music, which so many great artists seem to do these days.

Sara Bareilles – Between the Lines Lyrics 17 years ago
Definitely one of her top songs, in my opinion.

As for the meaning: Friendship between two people being something more, potentially, but lost after intentions left unspoken.. and the aftermath: her waking up to the reality of what she's been blinded from due to false hope, but still not feeling closure.

it gets harder to bloom in a garden of love"
