Thursday – You Were the Cancer Lyrics 15 years ago
Some exec who oversaw Thursday left the label during 2003, so they had new bosses. They were really stressed, had only 7 days without shows in 2003, and were thinking of breaking up. Rickly also had an ulcer that his doctor thought was stomach cancer, hence the inspiration for this song. Source: AP 3/2009.

Thursday – Unintended Long Term Effects Lyrics 15 years ago
the original title was "the unintended long-term effects of advanced nuclear waste," but geoff decided it was too long. geoff says in an article in AP about how he met a young woman in his depression support group whose family moved to america when she was just a girl. they were originally from hiroshima and they all ended up dying of radiation sickness and cancer and geoff can't help but think that because of america's actions, "there was a cloud that had drifted over America's sense of morality and self, after unleashing that kind of devastation on another people. This song is about living under that cloud."

Thursday – Resuscitation of a Dead Man Lyrics 15 years ago
geoff says in an interview in AP that he's slowly adopted the view of humanism. he tells a story about how at the corner of where he lives he saw a guy on a bike get hit by a car and watched the EMTs revive him and he points out "what other animals bring each other back from the dead?"

Thursday – Beyond the Visible Spectrum Lyrics 15 years ago
according to an interview in AP, this is about geoff's grandmother. "It's about on the one level, what happens to people when they are no longer there, and about the idea of ultraviolet light, which is beyond what you see."

Trading Voices – Take Me With You Lyrics 15 years ago
from the author:

"I hope that the people that have been deeply hurt in the past by someone...hear the words to this song and take a moment to think. I know it's rough out there, and there are many thoughtless human beings within both genders. Caution is a good thing....but don't close yourselves up and loose hope. If something feels right, and you're finding yourself fighting it because you're scared.....just let go....if you don't, you may miss out on something beautiful.

the home or home town that's being referred to here could be literal or a metaphor. it brings to my mind childhood and growing up, a lot of nostalgia. in a good way.

Dredg – Information Lyrics 15 years ago
oh, as for meaning...my guess is a man in the role of soul mate/answer-to-all-her-problems and his love. he fixes everything for her, as in makes the bad go away, but now he needs to be helped. cancer possibly? i don't know why i got that feeling.

this is apparently dead songs but with most of the lyrics different. i just happened to catch this when i heard "the world is black and white" in dead songs. listen to one and then the other, the music is too similar to not think this was a rough early version of the song

Lex Land – My Fault. Your Mistake. Lyrics 15 years ago
lex's dad is dexter holland of the offspring, so with that in mind it's easy to paint the picture that they don't have the kind of father-daughter relationship either wishes they had. perhaps the father wishes he could spend more time with his daughter, or the daughter wishes she could meet the father's high expectations. perhaps the father doesn't have high expectations but people will always see her in his shadow, not as a separate person but as dexter's offspring (pun completely intended). when your dad is that famous, you in turn will be that famous for being the child of this man, as opposed to being famous for the talent one carries and that may be overshadowed by the fame the name carries with it.

of course, this song could also be entirely fictional and not apply to the reality of the situation.

Sparta – Glasshouse Tarot Lyrics 15 years ago
from what i remember, the second time i saw sparta jim had said this song was about how a friend of the band's found out he had cancer but never bothered telling anyone, thinking it would be better that way.

"My arms are tied behind disease
I'll probably be gone the next time too
in a corner in a shadow I sit self-obsessed
too busy, too important to say goodbye"

with the kind of mentality that he should keep a low profile and not mention it at all so it would hurt friends and family less, jim begs to differ; not being able to say goodbye is something your friends may regret for the rest of their lives.

Lex Land – Easy Lyrics 15 years ago
i had just learned of dexter's daughter a few minutes ago after reading his wikipedia entry (which i decided to visit since i was listening to "gone away"), and i must say, although it's a different style of music than her old man, i'm really digging these tunes, musically and lyrically.

my two cents on the meaning: seems pretty obvious to me, a plea to make love/relationships easy, as opposed to complicated with problems and some people who just like to string others along. basically if you like someone then do something about it, but don't do it unless you mean it.

Boogdish – I Don't Miss Your Stupid Salad Lyrics 16 years ago
"This song is written from the perspective of a guy whose girlfriend got him to change his eating habits after he and his girlfriend have broken up. She somehow gets wind of him eating unhealthy foods and calls him to try and be friends because she feels bad about having caused him to hurt his body by eating such unhealthy foods. This song is how he responds. It's a statement of independence, without her dragging him down, he now has the strength to eat whatever food he wants. He carries with him a sense of victory for having gotten over his girlfriend but having her still care about him."

Boogdish – The Man Who Turned Into His Mother Lyrics 16 years ago
"When I lived in Pennsylvania I lived in an house where the top floor and foyer on the main floor was split from the basement and rest of the main floor, so that two separate apartments could be made. Our foyer shared a wall with the master bedroom of the other apartment. Many days as I put on my shoes, I could hear an alarm clock that was left ringing, and on late nights we had to hang out in our attic so as to not keep our neighbors up. The last week that I lived there I left my room to go get some falafel. I walked through our foyer, I could hear our neighbors engaged in the act of lovemaking. I sat in the foyer and listened for about ten minutes. Many thoughts entered my head. The one which stood out was an urge to walk to their wall, knock on it and say "You two behave yourselves in there." As I was eating my falafel I thought about this urge and where it came from. I came to the conclusion that I was feeling the need to act as my mother would, and I wondered if I was turning into my mother as I grew up."

Boogdish – Cool Ass Kelsi Lyrics 16 years ago
"I wrote this song for my girlfriend. She's not very good at math. I didn't want that to discourage her in life, so this song is about how cool it is to not be very good at math. I feel a responsibility to tell you that this same theme was written about in the online comic strip Achewood a few years ago and it was probably a subconscious influence on the song. "

Boogdish – Pee In The Sink Lyrics 16 years ago
"Sometimes when I drink I pee in the sink instead of a toilet. I think I was trying to explain why in this song, but I'm not sure if it came out correctly. I don't think it's unsanitary to pee in a sink unless the drain is clogged, someone left clean dishes in it or if someone is about to wash their baby in it."

Boogdish – Beourg-Waffle-Oursie Lyrics 16 years ago
"I really do like pancakes more than waffles. I don't think waffles are superior to pancakes as some say. Pancakes seem more accessible, you don't need a special iron to make them, you can use a regular frying pan. I do prefer Waffle House over The International House of Pancakes though when it comes to restaurants."

Boogdish – Sarah Lyrics 16 years ago
"My friend Adam and I went on tour over parts of last April. He met a girl named Sarah at one of our shows and was taken aback by her. The next day while driving he told me "I could be like totally in love with her, maybe." The uses of the words "totally" and "maybe" in the same sentence sparked an inspiration for me."

Boogdish – Your Song Ruined The Funeral Lyrics 16 years ago
"A friend of mine named Ben died this summer and I wrote this the night that I found out. He and I posted on the same internet message board, someone else on the message board had talked about how we should write songs for him, that he would've done that for one of us we had died. My dad died a year and a half ago, and after he died I tried to write a song about him and it came out very awful and I was embarrassed and a little bit ashamed about it. So this song is about the pressure that I feel whenever I'm trying to write a song about someone I know who died. I dedicate it to Ben."

Boogdish – Whitney Lyrics 16 years ago
"My cousin Whitney (age 6) and I were sitting at the Congress St. "bat bridge" in Austin, TX. It's the largest urban bat home in the world. We were waiting for the bats to come out and Whitney was getting impatient with them. She yelled out "I'm a tasty pear" to entice the bats. They didn't come out, and I'm not sure if it's because they knew pears couldn't talk, if they didn't want to eat a pear, or if maybe they just didn't hear her."

Boogdish – You Are The Impersonator Lyrics 16 years ago
"Any Elvis impersonator who is under the age of 30, is too young to have actually seen Elvis perform. Other than films of Elvis, they could only have seen other Elvis impersonators. This song is written from the perspective of an older Elvis impersonator who feels the newer generation are impersonating in an untrue manner."

Boogdish – Don't Pick Up Hitchhikers Lyrics 16 years ago
"Young people tend to romanticize the traveling lifestyle. This song is written from the perspective of a young man who had believed that the only way to find himself was to go out on the road. Out there he picked up a female hitch hiker and fell in love with her. It was the first time he ever fell in love. She was not in love with him, but liked him. She didn't like him so much as a person, but as a ride. She tapped into his romanticization of the road and used it to her advantage, knowing she could get farther from him the longer he felt that he was on the most important trip of his life. Then he realizes that he's not going to get anymore out of this trip than he has already gotten (he thinks he's gotten true love) and starts talking about heading home. This song takes place right before his heart is broken."

Boogdish – Stop Drinking, Start Skating Lyrics 16 years ago
I wrote this the last night that I lived in Pennsylvania. I was planning on drinking a 40 and hanging out with some dudes. Then one of them brought out his skateboard. I hadn't skated in years and I tried to show them some of my old moves. Having imbibed much of the 40, I was unable. I then made a resolution to drink less and skate more.

Boogdish – Space Will Straighten Your Daughter Right Up Lyrics 16 years ago
"In the future instead of sending children to military school to straighten them out, the wealthy will instead pay heavily to have their children enlisted in an intergalactic fighting force where they will be taught about courage, honor and the finer points of star combat. The children will be told that they were selected by another race of ultra intelligent beings to save the galaxy, but it was actually their parents access to large sums of space credits."

Boogdish – 3 AM At The 24 Hr Pet Store Lyrics 16 years ago
"I met a guy in Little Rock, AR who bought a guinea pig while he was drunk. It seemed irresponsible to me. But I realized that this must not happen too often, because people usually get drunk at night, and pet stores are usually only open in the day. This song is written from the perspective of a pet store clerk at a 24 hour pet store who nightly deals with drunks after the bars close. He's fed up with it."
