Some exec who oversaw Thursday left the label during 2003, so they had new bosses. They were really stressed, had only 7 days without shows in 2003, and were thinking of breaking up. the original title was "the unintended long-term effects of advanced nuclear waste," but geoff decided it was too long. geoff says in an article in AP about how he met a young woman in his depression support group whose family moved to america when she was just a girl. they were originally from hiroshima and they all ended up dying of radiation sickness and cancer and geoff can't help but think that because of america's actions, "there was a cloud that had drifted over America's sense of morality and self, after unleashing that kind of devastation on another people. This song is about living under that cloud." |

lex's dad is dexter holland of the offspring, so with that in mind it's easy to paint the picture that they don't have the kind of father-daughter relationship either wishes they had. perhaps the father wishes he could spend more time with his daughter, or the daughter wishes she could meet the father's high expectations. perhaps the father doesn't have high expectations but people will always see her in his shadow, not as a separate person but as dexter's offspring (pun completely intended). when your dad is that famous, you in turn will be that famous for being the child of this man, as opposed to being famous for the talent one carries and that may be overshadowed by the fame the name carries with it.
of course, this song could also be entirely fictional and not apply to the reality of the situation. |

from what i remember, the second time i saw sparta jim had said this song was about how a friend of the band's found out he had cancer but never bothered telling anyone, thinking it would be better that way.

i had just learned of dexter's daughter a few minutes ago after reading his wikipedia entry (which i decided to visit since i was listening to "gone away"), and i must say, although it's a different style of music than her old man, i'm really digging these tunes, musically and lyrically.
my two cents on the meaning: seems pretty obvious to me, a plea to make love/relationships easy, as opposed to complicated with problems and some people who just like to string others along. basically if you like someone then do something about it, but don't do it unless you mean it. |

"When I lived in Pennsylvania I lived in an house where the top floor and foyer on the main floor was split from the basement and rest of the main floor, so that two separate apartments could be made. Our foyer shared a wall with the master bedroom of the other apartment. Many days as I put on my shoes, I could hear an alarm clock that was left ringing, and on late nights we had to hang out in our attic so as to not keep our neighbors up. The last week that I lived there I left my room to go get some falafel. I walked through our foyer, I could hear our neighbors engaged in the act of lovemaking. I sat in the foyer and listened for about ten minutes. Many thoughts entered my head. The one which stood out was an urge to walk to their wall, knock on it and say "You two behave yourselves in there." As I was eating my falafel I thought about this urge and where it came from.
