@[EvilMonchichi:8550] That being said, my points still stands! Your comment is public, and anyone who visits is able to see it and know it potentially was directed at them. The comment isn't at one person, no -- it's at anyone who has edited these lyrics, and just happens to apply to others in general. As a community, many artists don't publish their official lyrics (Grimes frequently being one of them), and listeners are left to try and transcribe. I think this is extremely commendable, and I'm sure the majority of people would agree they'd rather have some semi-accurate lyrics than none at all. Additionally, if lyrics are incorrect, that's what we have the editing form for. Again, my main suggestion here is that it's better to be polite and professional when criticizing fellow dedicated members rather than unnecessarily belittling and condescending. I think that discredits this website more than anything! Sorry for the length of this, and it's perfectly okay if you don't agree with me. :) Have a good day! |

@[Amaranthae:8401] The original lyrics were submitted before the official lyrics were out. There were no sources to check at the time. No need to get condescending with people trying to share information to the best of their ability! :) |
Kacey Musgraves – Merry Go 'Round Lyrics | 9 years ago |
@[Proteus:3637]' wife I really like how you tried to tear apart the song and instead just proved its point. The basis of these lyrics is to highlight how the South DOES suffer from these issues like many other places do, but in the South, it is very frequently buried under the idyllic dream and perception of a white picket fence, happy family, married with children, etc, when this isn't really the case at all. It's just a precedent and trope that we almost always see in country music, and her song is a subversion of that trope. |

Panic! at the Disco – Far Too Young to Die Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Okay, first off, this is hands down my favorite song on the album. The dark, steady beat is really reminiscent of its 80s counterpart, and the lyrics are very measured and more like a chant than a "song" per se. It's a very sinister invitation, very mysterious, very captivating. Furthermore, I think the meaning ends up being so much more incredible when you can relate it back to Shakespeare! There's a famous misquote: "Heavy hands the head that wears the crown." But the original is: "Canst thou, O partial sleep, give thy repose To the wet sea-boy in an hour so rude, And in the calmest and most stillest night, With all appliances and means to boot, Deny it to a king? Then happy low, lie down! *** Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown." - Henry IV (King Henry) The accepted meaning is one of heavy responsibility, a responsibility that comes with a lot of consequences. In the greater context of the song, you get the feeling that it's a very obsessive love/lust that "he" cannot control -- there is an implication that he knows this isn't good (presumably because the lover will be hurt by his actions), but he cannot help himself, and must seduce them. This is done through lies ("I'm twisting allegories now"), displays desperation ("Fixation or psychosis? Devoted to neurosis now"), and a desire to possess and claim ("I want to complicate you", "I've got to have you closer now"). "I'm chasing roller coasters" and "Endless romantic stories" suggest that he may be in it for the chase and thrill of the hunt. However, I love the chorus, because I am an optimist :) I like to interpret it as "he" has done all of these twisted things in order to possess this lover, who he has presumably been dishonest and deceitful towards, and the lover in turn is seemingly lost in the situation ("You never could control me")... However, even though "he" has realized this, and understands all of his actions and wrongdoings, and the consequences of it (see: "the crown hangs heavy"), the lover still shows up ("Well I never really thought that you'd come tonight"). Naturally, "he" believes that this can't go on anymore, hence the lines "Give me one last kiss". But, it is my hopes that the lover is committed no matter what, and things are not as bad as they seem. "I've never so adored you" might be a very genuine plea -- he is truly in love and it's a frightening thing to behold; especially when you know or believe that you're someone who's really no good. And there seems to be some genuine reciprocation on the lover's side, as well -- "the crown hangs heavy **on either side**" insinuates that both options or sides in the situation have much gravity. The lover cannot be completely innocent. They too, chose to come of their own volition, and to return his love of their own volition. In the end, I think that his may even be very relatable to Romeo & Juliet considering the Shakespearean context. It would make the crown metaphor more tangible (Romeo's and Juliet's two opposing ruling families, literally royalty) , and the general tenor of the song can allude to a brash and all-consuming love with dire consequences. MAN. I love this song x) |

Peaches – Fuck the Pain Away Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Yeeeeaah, considering that this is one of the first prolific white female rappers who made it a point to embrace her sexuality and subvert standards, I'd try thinking over this comment again. Peaches is still going strong, and on top of that, she makes all of her own music. |
Grimes – Oblivion Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Like raspy says, she stated in an interview that she was assaulted, and this song was kind of her way of coping with the situation. She said she spent years paranoid and frightened, and finally opted to make a song that kind of subverts her assault -- it kind of fingers the line of sounding like SHE'S the one stalking someone at night and also being stalked. The first half of the song is very narrative -- walking around at night, musing about how she can just walk up to the man and snap his neck. Sort of a reversal of power. But then, she talks about how -she- fearfully walks, staring straight ahead, fighting the urge to glance behind her, etc. However, this is still sung in sort of an ambiguous way, like she's commenting on the man she follows glancing at her, and she's staring straight ahead, focused on him. Finally, the "See you on a dark night" is pretty literal but still ambiguous, both the statement of the stalker and the stalked -- they know they'll see each other on a dark night. It's both helpless and powerful, to fit both roles. The second half is when it seems to turn to self-reflection and her fear of men. She mentions her aloneness and how it's hard to have a relationship with a man again, she can't find someone to hold her hand. But, she doesn't enjoy her fear, and she really just wants someone to give her the kick she needs to grow out of it; to look into her eyes and tell her everything is okay ("la la la la la~") x) |

Blue October – 18th Floor Balcony Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I really feel like this is a song about a guy who is just so madly in love that he can't believe it. He's holding her, touching her hair, she's laying on his stomach, they're talking about their lives, and he is in disbelief at how perfect everything is in that moment. |
Alex Winston – Velvet Elvis Lyrics | 11 years ago |
The cross the line was after her dad found them, so it doesn't make sense that it would relate to the "light his coat in turpentine". The "slice my starry eye" is just a reference to a song by the Pixies. Aaaand the lyrics on here are wrong, she is actually saying "caught" and not "carve". |

Alex Winston – Velvet Elvis Lyrics | 11 years ago |
So this song is great because if you're not paying attention, it sounds like a really sweet love song where the girl refers to her boyfriend as her velvet Elvis. And then you read the lyrics and SHIT BRIX. This song is literally about a velvet Elvis. This is an old fad; it was a framed painting of Elvis painted on black velvet. She's literally singing about a picture of Elvis that she is in love with, and seems to believe is real/alive ("Kill the bitch that bats at eye at Elvis"). More ridiculously, her dad appears to walk in on her while she's masturbating using the picture ("Papa said I cross the line/Caught us in our special time, Elvis"). And then she's sent to an asylum. Holy shit. "Shackled arms are tight" <-- she's in restraints "Now it's five by five" <-- she's living in the psych ward's little room now "Finger paint and circle time" <-- Normal activities you do in a psych ward Additionally, the chorus of "They're comin'/They're comin'/They're comin'/Oh no!" I think is either her being super paranoid that people want her Elvis, or this just might be referring to professionals/her parents coming to take her away to the hospital. Basically, this song fucking ROCKS. |

Muse – Animals Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This is a song very much a big ol' fuck you to Ayn Rand, hahaha. It's a very subtle joke, too -- we, as humans, are all scientifically and literally animals, and the lyrics poke fun at people who take that to heart, people who believe we are no different than the savage natural world around us. Bellamy is pointing out that it's a system full of exploitation and murder and brutality, and humans, with sentience and intelligence, are meant to be above that and not stoop to that level. And, of course, this is overall a fuck you to corrupt corporations, specifically Wall Street, etc ("buy when there's blood on the streets"; the sound of a riot at the end, perhaps a call back to the Occupy movement). |

In This Moment – Adrenalize Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Such a violent and sexy song! I love the comparisons to the seven deadly sins. The meaning is really straightforward, but it works for it -- this is a blunt, in your face song about enjoying life in the fullest and grittiest manner possible, and not giving a fuck. Also, I had no idea this was sung by a female until I looked up the band! Her voice is INCREDIBLE. |
Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It just dawned on me that this song might actually be implying a passage of time, which makes it make a lot more sense! "In a few weeks I will get time To realize it's right before my eyes And I can take it if it's what I want to do" Initial feelings about asking the girl out! He doubts himself, but he's plucking up the courage and he wants to do it. And then, "a few weeks" later rolls around... "I am leaving This is starting to feel like It's right before my eyes And I can taste it It's my sweet beginning" He's going to finally approach her, he's finally reached that point of courage, and he's hopeful and ready. "And I can tell just what you want You don't want to be alone" He understands, now, that this girl is horribly lonely and he wants to fill that gap in her life because he loves her, but he flakes out because he doesn't think he's capable of doing that for her. "Maybe next year I'll have no time To think about the questions to address" The next year rolls around, and he's aware that it's getting late in the game and she's still plagued with loneliness that's eating her up. He still entertains the idea of trying to be there for her ("Am I the one to try to stop the fire?") "I wouldn't test you I'm not the best you could have attained Why try anything? I will get there Just remember I know" Again, he gives up, because he thinks he's not good enough for her and that someone else would give her what she really needs. He thinks he should just not bother, but he stops himself, and convinces himself that maybe one day in the future he'll finally bring himself to try for real (again), and to remind her that out of everyone, he wants to her to know that he is aware and cares about her suffering ("Just remember I know...") Also, from the way he sings, it doesn't seem resentful or bitter, but very sweet and sincere. Hence, why I believe he's a compassionate person who badly wants to help the person he cares about, but just doesn't have the balls/thinks he's good enough lmao. |

Florence + the Machine – Bedroom Hymns Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Bobeeny's comment is definitely spot on and what I gathered this to be. It's a personal, intimate song, and I almost have the feeling that it stemmed from looking for greater answers. At the end when she says the absolution/solution lines, I think that it's commenting on how everyone is looking for the Truth and what happiness and purpose is, and in the end, she found her answer in having beautiful, spiritual love making and that connection with another human being. It is the greatest and most powerful love she knows, thus, it is akin to Christ's love. A lot of philosophers have discussed this intimate love as being extreme holy, so maybe this is her take on saying "eros" (romantic love) over "agape" (unconditional love). All in all, searching for Christ/holiness/etc is not something that you have to go necessarily soul-searching for; instead, beautiful intimacy with another person can find you that truth. |
Shiina Ringo – La Salle de Bain Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I feel like this has a lot to do with loving someone, and how that relates to the vastness of the rest of the world. She says that meeting this person was complete happenstance, and the feeling to them was so powerful they said, "Just do it, kill me." And to her, she valued the world and everything around her so much, and she still does ("all of the little things of this little world/are so very dear to me it hurts to think of them"), but now she has to deal with the incredible attraction she has to this person. Yet, she's still willing to bear all of herself to them, and become completely vulnerable (the wash me/cut me verses). It's a very deep, all-consuming ("i'm underwater"), spiritual sort of love that's happening. She acknowledges all of this, but even still, at the end of the song, I feel like the love she felt frightened her. She tells the world, "I'm not afraid of a little boredom. I didn't need to meet this person." I get chills every time I hear this song. |
Regina Spektor – Jessica Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I would love to know who this is about! It's so beautiful and sweet, and it's nice hearing her voice with just a guitar as opposed to the classic Regina piano medley. This feels like a song that's about someone who is awfully sick, or perhaps already passed ): But it's still so saccharine. I feel like Regina -would- be the type to write a song about a person who is terminal/dead in the kindest way possible. |
Miranda Lambert – Run Daddy Run Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Daddy, can you hear the devil drawing near? Like a bullet from a gun, run Daddy run All the songs you used to sing to me would rock the birds to sleep I need you now, so please somehow put rockets on your feet Daddy, can you hear the devil drawing near? Like a bullet from a gun, run Daddy run Saw that dark cloud comin' from a million miles away Oh, how I've dreaded this god forsaken place Daddy, can you hear the devil drawing near? Like a bullet from a gun, run Daddy run Mama's been cryin' in the kitchen Sister's been afraid of the dark I've been gatherin' the pieces of all these shattered hearts I don't care where you go to I don't care where you land Just get out of here, Daddy, as fast as you can Daddy, can you hear the devil drawing near? Like a bullet from a gun, run Daddy run Run, Daddy, run Run, Daddy, run Run, Daddy, run Run, Daddy, run |
