I had a pretty different interpretation of this song. I don't think the girl he's speaking to is NAMED Ashley. A question is asked "Who are you dreaming of?" And the girl responds, "Ashley." So maybe this girl is preoccupied with someone else or otherwise unavailable (a lesbian perhaps), but still lead him along or giving him some false hope.
