This is such a lovely song. Perfectly describes how you see salvation in the one you love. How they encompass everything you never knew you wanted. This is my favorite song right now and I can't take it off repeat so I thought I should write something about its meaning. This is a love song of utter denial. She says she doesn't want all these things yet those are the things she wants the most. She denies wanting them in an attempt to abandon her feelings. At first I thought that was all there was to this song. Someone hopelessly in love trying to convince themselves they arent. Then I took into consideration those last few lines. "Not looking for an ending to make the pieces fit Need is always pending on how much you can get" Those line make it seem more like she realizes it's over and shes just getting those final words out. Still has a bit of a love-sick tinge. If need is pending on how much you can get. I can't get you so I don't need you. Instead of being in this love she thought she needed she has resigned herself to just "get by" without it. Personally the first stanza kind of describe how I react to most of the world. I'm always trying to understand people and get them to understand me I just won't admit to it. |

This might just be my new favorite garbage song. The meaning I guess can be interpreted many ways but hmm. If I was to venture a guess I'd say its an internal monologue of someone in a new relationship. "Don't say no to me Daddy" The meeting/initial stages of the relationship "Happiness" Falling in love. "Is this a test?" Can this love be real or just another in a line of failures? "Do you thing I'm blessed?" More or less asking are you worthy of this love "I'm such a mess" Believing you're not worthy of this love and maybe not worthy of anything "The time is now" Knowing your need to put away your doubt and not be afraid to let down your guard "Please let me rest" Time apart and thinking maybe you aren't meant for each (repetition) The repetition signifies the doubts resurfacing over and over again as they always do. "Oh, Holy Shit!" Realizing it is the real thing after all. Amazing song (Even if I might be totally off on the meaning) I actually heard it today for the first time (And I call myself a Garbage fan) I can't take it off repeat! |

The line that hit me the hardest was "I lie around in bed all day just staring at the walls" because I was literally lying in bed staring at the ceiling trying not to think of the person when it played. This one is hard to peg but I'll piece together what I think about what it says. The first verse describes an extravagant and indulgent scenes. That on the surface seems desirable but is really 'piss poor'. The chorus I'll leave for later since I think it hinges on the two verses. The second verse starts with a kind of duality showing the real and the fake. Tuning the plain waitress into an airbrushed actress. Then the question is asked, Is it all worth it? Trying to achieve some idealistic happiness? Now for the chorus which confuses things for me. I've come to two conclusions about the chorus. A. The whole song is someone's idealistic dream and by asking that question in the second verse the person's dream has been shaken adding the line "though my vision is strained" to the following choruses. B. The chorus is the waitress' dream to make her own bright future that is different from the fake happiness that people try to envision for her. But the constant bombardment is starting to wear away at her dream. Of course I could be off about the whole thing. Either way it stays as one of my favorite Metric songs and maybe one of my favorite songs of all time. |

A beautifully simple song by Laura about a man who although he has good intentions doesn't amount to much. I can Identify. Amazing how illustrative Laura Veirs' music is no matter what the subject. One of my stranger interpretations of this song is that the guy is like the uni-bomber and his idea of chimney sweeping is cleaning up (i.e. bombing) anything he thinks is wrong. He writes his manifestos while quietly living in the forest. Just an off-color idea. |

Beautiful song as all Laura's songs are! This song seems to be about finding a place where you can get away from it all but then you realize that being away from it all is the last thing you wanted. You may find peace but you also find loneliness. Then again another interpretation is that the person in the song is lost in their solitude waiting for the right person to bring them out of it. In that case the final verse is really sad because he/she ended up 'where gravity is dead', perhaps. |
