Great song, but I have a serious problem with it.
So, this dude meets a girl who is, and I quote, outta site. Like, ok, but what about her is special? And if every single guy there wants her, what makes this dude special? I mean, again, great song, but I am just not convinced either of these vapid basic bitches are worthy of any of it. |

for literally years, this particular songmeanings page was inaccessible, much to my annoyance, i guess it was a bug or something. i had been wanting to read the comments FOREVER, but gave up. i don't listen to sonic youth a lot, but i came across daydream nation and started listening to it. i remembered the sm page and figured they might be available since the revamp.
yay! it works now! thanks songmeanings! awesome!
but then...
ALL THE FUCKING COMMENTS ARE JUST AN EMO DEBATE?!!!
such a letdown. i don't even care about the song anymore. |

Liz Phair – H.W.C. Lyrics

hey i don't make the rules. i'm not saying liz phair is a slut, although she probably is, and that's ok. the narrator is a cum guzzling slut. whether it's serious or playful, or biting social commentary, she's a cum guzzling slut who likes rubbing it all over herself. and i don't think anyone has ever doubted robert plant's or elvis' slut status. you should probably iron your panties, they are pretty bunched up. |

The Breeders – Off You Lyrics

well thinskizzy, I've not seen Her, but after listening to this so many time and never picking it up, it seems like she's singing to the earth itself, and all its elements. "I've never seen a scarlet or a riot or the violence of you" a volcano? "we're moving" like tectonic plates, etc. I'm sure it's probably also about her friends on Nantucket and stuff and more things we will never know |

The White Stripes – Why Can't You Be Nicer To Me? Lyrics
| 12 years ago

christ people, it's not about being nicer to your fellow man. "people don't even know me,
but they know how to show me" isn't empathy; it's bitter and dejected. He's lonely and wants to die, and wants everyone to know he's unhappy. It's probably about a girl. |

Jeff Buckley – The Sky Is A Landfill Lyrics
| 13 years ago

Interviews can provide insight to what an artist was thinking while writing a song, but people often fail to realize that most artists are reticent about revealing everything about their work and intentions. Good songs, written by artists (as opposed to the formulaic pop fuckery written by hacks) are rarely just about anything. Period. I can see how it might have been and probably was conceived in response to smoking, but it's definitely more universal. If he had gone on and on in the interview about what each little metaphor meant, and the significance of every double entendre, it would be very boring and take all the fun out of arguing about it on the internet. |

Des Ark – Snake Stuff Lyrics

"If I don't learn to love
I'm going to die of fear"
I don't think she means that she can't love. Being afraid to love isn't the same as being afraid to be/die alone. I think she means that if she doesn't learn how to love properly she'll die with a broken heart. People unable to love die with empty hearts. |

Buke and Gass – Immoral But Just Fine, Okay Lyrics
| 13 years ago

So, I know how to use google translator. And I was like, "bad duck? No." But sure enough:
"This was an improv that spanned an hour or so, and we manually whittled it down to a pleasant 4 minutes, smoothing out the transitions and adding vocals with lyrics that may or may not have anything to do with sex or food. I just kept thinking, “bad duck,” which stuck. However, “mauvais canard” is much more fun to say, as I found out in the process. The working title was “Patience is a Virgin”, but that was faaar too literal. Some day soon this will be on our next batch of tshirts.
This is, sadly, a song that we may never play live. It’s the only piece we created specifically for the album in the studio, and the many little added sound blips, running around upstairs pushing chairs and moving things (including a live vacuum cleaner at one point), probably wouldn’t be technically feasible onstage with just the two of us. At least as far as we’ve tried thus far."

Portishead – Glory Box Lyrics
|
"I just wanna be a woman" means that she doesn't want to have to be a certain anything to anyone; simply a woman. Obviously she wants to make use of that glory box, but she's tired of parading it around, trying to auction it off to the highest bidder. She's saying: we're all made to tempt each other, so let's stop with all the fucking pretenses.
And I think it's more than just about a relationship. Saying "give us some room" and "take a little look from our side" is deliberate. meshellle was on to something when she said it's about settling. I don't think it's about settling, per se, but it is about standards and what is expected from both men and women, in relationships, and in the world at large. She's not asking for special treatment because she's a women; she just wants a reason why she should bother trying so hard |

Cake – Italian Leather Sofa Lyrics
|
This is maybe a stupid thing to suggest, but what if he really does care about her? She obviously doesn't care about him aside from his money, but this is a very one-sided song. We know these things about him: 1. he's rich. 2. he likes having sex with an attractive woman, and 3. he never refuses her. Even if he is an island (and we actually don't know that for sure, only that she doesn't care whether or not he is), that doesn't necessarily mean he has no emotions. We don't know how he feels about her, just that she gets what she wants because he lets her have it. It may or may not be because of the healthy breasts. Maybe she wanted them, and he bought them for her because he wants her to be happy and feel good about her body.
That's probably reaching, but I have to believe that this song completely ignores his side for a reason. I think it's about a succubus, not a shallow couple. Maybe he's getting what he wants, and maybe he's not.

This is the first time I've read these lyrics. I always thought it was "I'm not saying he turned me down" instead of "I'm not saved, he turned me down" which obviously changes the meaning dramatically. I kind of like it better the way I misheard it. It's impossible to be turned down by Jesus. |
