Sufjan Stevens – Jacksonville Lyrics 18 years ago
Sufjan is adept enough to keep his lyrics vague. He's no poet. He's good at creating an addictive melody--that's all. The entire album of Illinois is a prime example of his ineptitude. His songs are melodic but not meaninful, and they mostly rely on annoying chorus lines. Illinois is one of the most overrated albums of 2005.

Bob Dylan – Most of the Time Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song. I heard it for the first time on High Fidelity, which is a great film and even better book. This song reminds me of what it's like to feel the pain of separating.

Jay-Z – 99 Problems Lyrics 20 years ago
I haven't seen any website get this line right:

"If you grew up with holes in your zapper toes "

Should be

"If you grew up with holes in your zapatos"

Zapatos is spanish for shoes. He mispronounced it, but I still think it's a clever rhyme.

Del Amitri – Always The Last To Know Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm very familiar with this situation. You're in a long term relationship with someone, and when it ends and break communication it's a shock to your system because you've been used to being that person's confidant. Now you only hear about her from mutual friends, and you're always the last to now about her life.

I recently found out that my ex of 3 years is moving in with her current boyfriend. We've only been broken up for 2 months.

Duncan Sheik – In the Absense of the Sun Lyrics 20 years ago
Over two years later, this song has again found its way into defining my problematic love life. Same girl. We've gone through so much since the first time I posted. I have loved her intensely, and she has become a part of everything that I am and everything that I strive to become. Within the last month, however, she broke it off. It didn't register in my brain as a possibility, let alone a reality, but she has already moved on to another guy. And I don't want to feel this way. I don't want to say I'm just a friend.

She is lying to herself, and she is cheating us both out of what we shared. I know that she still loves me, but she's afraid of the pain that we have had to endure due to the distance. And she's doing her best to try to forget the connection and the feelings that accompany our togetherness. I understand exactly why this is happening, and I don't want to look away. I don't want to be the one denied.

I am a shadow of myself without her.

I hate this damn song. My girlfriend of 3 years out of nowhere fell for another guy, and this is "their song."

The third to the last line in Method Man's verse is:
"Hot -- forcin my way up in the door."

Very good song. I love the imagery this band uses.

Ben Folds Five – Magic Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is definitely about the death of a loved one, but I don't think it's the result of suicide. "The lines on your face did tell it was just as well, you'd never be yourself again." I believe the preceding line describes an elderly person, interpreting the "lines on your face" as wrinkles.

Ben Folds Five – Narcolepsy Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't think this song is about Narcolepsy at all, but a guy that detatches himself from emotion, especially those of the troubles in his relationship. "I Left you awake to cry the tears while I was dreaming in streams flowing between the shores of joy and sadness." He became unfeeling, which exacerbated the pain felt by his significant other. At the end, he reveals that he no longer wants to live his life in that manner. "Because I'm not tired. I'm not tired. I just sleep."

Duncan Sheik – In the Absense of the Sun Lyrics 22 years ago
Somehow, Duncan wrote this song vicariously for me. I would have gotten around to it, but I'm too busy dealing with the garbage life throws at me. Of course, as most depression does, my plight revolves around a girl. We're dating and I love her, but she doesn't feel the same way. I try to forget it and enjoy the time I have with her, but it's too important to forego the thoughts about it. I think the problem is I talk to her too much. It's just the opposite of this song, actually.
