With many KC songs (as well as another favorite, Steely Dan) sometimes it's best to simply let the sounds of the phonemes flow over you, without really giving them much "meaning".....the mere pronunciation and verbal poly-syllabic quality of the lyric is enough to really push a good song into the stratosphere, with/without attempting to find a meaning. | |

Absolutely agree, Vietnamese war-related no doubt. However, I think that Fripp & Co. would find it also agreeable if enthusiasts such as ourselves were to appropriate the lyrics for our own enjoyment....esp. the new younger generations who discover the band. As it turns out, I first became a fan of this group in 1991 at the age of eighteen. It was only 20 years later that I was "diagnosed" with SPD, Schizoid Personality Disorder. The word is in quotes because, within the psychiatric community in general, the DSM is not really taken all that seriously. It was an AMAZING discovery because, yes, I live in the 21st century, and yes, NOTHING I've got I REALLY need. An idiosyncratic characteristic of Schizoid Personality Disorder as a matter of fact. |

Don't forget that Crimso itself covered Holst and Donovan, and then covered ITSELF several times over with this very song over a 30-yr. span. At the very least, perhaps this person, moeburn, will enjoy the original and be motivated to seek out/investigate some of King Crimson's other material. | This is one of my favorite songs. It's crazy because I used to hear this song as a little kid all the time. I liked it but I used to always like "That thing." Better. When I revisited this song as an adult very recently I realized how amazing it is. I'm a man and have never been through what she's singing about but her pain is so honest it's riveting. She does an amazing job of putting the listener in her shoes. I feel like I know exactly how she feels. I kept thinking maybe my wife feels like this towards me at times. Honestly, it just made me want to be a better husband. This song is truly underrated. Like I said it's one of my favorites ever and I listen to a ton of music from all genres. | |

| The song was written by David Gilmour. It was written by Ken Baker from Unicorn and was originally on that bands' third album "Too Many Crooks" released in 1976. David Gilmour produced that album and its predecessor "Blue Pine Trees". He apparently asked Ken Baker to write some lyrics for him. He apparently had writer's block at the time and suggested he do his own version of this song. | |

so this is what I get from this song... He is talking about the cruelty of society and how the law of the survivor of the fittest has never disappeared which that would be why "I don't wanna die So you're gonna have to." as in " it is not personal it's either me or you." then he says this "I look inside of myself, And try to find someone else Someone who's willing to die, Instead of watching you cry for help. I know that blood will be spilled, And if you wont, then I will. My grave will never be filled, It's either kill or be killed." which is talking about how people try to find goodness inside themselves and yet they choose survivor first which explains why we just watch people crying for help and do nothing and still try to find good inside ourselves but we always choose ourselves before anyone else. the second part of the first verse is talking about how even the awareness of a supreme being doesn't stop people even when they are religious to give into the primary need to survive and how guilt and doubt consumes us when we realize we are not good and we step on each other to reach our goals and survive by burring that guilt and the fragments of our remorse inside cause in the end survivor is what matters being personal or not... then on the second verse he is talking about it is now words keep on being poured be it good or not is for the sake of seizing the opportunity and to him his reason to survive is his baby girl, that he wont give his place to anyone for it's not different in anything we do be it as a man or as a beast the problem will always be humans, it doesn't matter what belief even if it's angels or demons (for good or for worse) in the end all we do is bury our feelings and run over people even if it costs someone's life. "Now that I see I see you buried Six feet below. Another life, goes into the night. I couldn't let him breathe, 'Cause I didn't wanna die Now that I see I see you buried Six feet below. It's not alright Can't you hear me as I cry? I couldn't let you live, 'Cause I didn't wanna die" it takes things getting done for us to realize what we have done to others, that's why it says only after the person is 6 feet below he realizes what he has done but no remorse cause he didn't care really care about that person, and on the second he gives a contrast that only once he's done the same to the ones he loved he realized that what he did is not right, but in the end is all about survivor that's why it end on the chore not on verses. |
