It's much less a label than a category; every vareity of music is easier to describe if you assign it a "label", and although certain groups (Such as the Juliana Theory) do break boundaries and have lots of vareity in their style (TJT has some pop songs, some techno, some emo..), it's still much easier to describe any given band in a one or two word label (such as emo) than giving them a paragraph about how unique the band is. I've said this before, but though a song may be based on specific incidents (as JoshuaB has noted), it also is about a broader category of general emotions (Dade 322). Although a song has one specific meaning, it applies to many situations. I have a reputation for being an asshole, mouthing off, and being a smartass... So to me, this song is about knowing when to keep your mouth shut, but to each his own. (Add obligatory "fuk u n00b" comments to deftonesgirl here.) |
