Saliva – Always Lyrics 21 years ago
All these meanings posted on this page make a lot of sense, and I agree that battered girlfriend prespective is probably it, but does it confuse anybody else that we left out the most obvious explanation? First time I heard this, I thought maybe he was singing as a guy about a guy. If it weren't for the line "does it make you feel more like a man" would we just have assumed that he was writing, as himself, about a girl. As soon as another man is mentoned, we bend over backwards to find explanations that keep the song straight. Not that I'm calling all of you bigots or anything - you're probably not - it's just a thought.

Bad Religion – Don't Pray on Me Lyrics 21 years ago
I love it too, the last verse especially, but can someone explain to me why, even in the CD booklet, the second verse isn't listed? Greg sings so fast, ennunciates (sp?) so poorly, and uses such a vocabulary that I can never quite tell exactly what he says. Help me out on this, please, because this is what I hear:
A bitter debate
and a feminine fate
lie entangled like
two precious babes
While the former gets warmer
It's the latter that matters
Except on the nation's airwaves
Custodians of public opinion (???)
aqrwhvbcvbzvcx discussing her rights
Lay hands off her body
It's not your fuckin' right (life?)

Bad Religion – All Good Soldiers Lyrics 21 years ago
I've always thought that the army is sort of a necessary evil, but there's just so damn much to criticize. I think it's a bit over the top to say that soldiers obey the president because he believes in god (seriously, you think they aren't atheist soldiers? I bet you thousands of them love this band), but, at the same time, nothing is more obnoxious than people thinking that a war is going to go well for them (if war is something capable of going well) because some supernatural blah is on their side. Everyone thinks God is on their side.

The Aquabats – Captain Hampton & The Midget Pirates Lyrics 21 years ago
I love the aquabats as much as the next raving fan, but I've got to side with those assholes who say that they're lyrically shallow. They're silly, and I think any profound meaning you find comes from reading too deep into it.

Goldfinger – Minds Eye Lyrics 21 years ago
Wow, I never did read that deep into it. I thought that this song just dwelled on the theme shown all throughout the self-titled album - severely damaged pride. I've always felt that "I remember the things I did. I know I fucked up, and I wish I was dead" was key information, coinciding real well with "If I'm sorry, does that mean I have to change?" and "I break down and call you 'cause I'm weak" and the whole deep regret of "Nothing to Prove". The perception thing never even occurred to me, in spite of the title Mind's Eye. Christ, I'm dumb sometimes.

Goldfinger – Fuck You And Your Cat Lyrics 21 years ago
Changing their style isn't at all the same as selling out. I have total faith that if Goldfinger wanted to sell it, they'd do it well enough to be famous instead of completely obscure. If you pay attention to the changes in band members, it pretty closely mirrors the change in style. On the self-titled and on Hangups, there was a strong sense of ska because of Charlie Paulson (guitar) and Simon Williams (bass.) Simon was replaced by Kelly - who barely writes - in time for Stomping Ground, where the ska is significantly lessened. By the time Open Your Eyes was recorded, Charlie was gone too, leaving all the writing to John, who, it seems, has not a drop of ska left in him. Moreover, the band's biggest succes came from "Superman" being on the Tony Hawk soundtrack, and that's about as ska as they've ever sounded. If they wanted to sell out to the people who were giving them the most money, they would have gone lighter and more ska, not heavier and punkier. Besides, who tries to win fans by putting out an album full of hardcore, almost accusational animal rights accusation?

Goldfinger – Don't Say Goodbye Lyrics 21 years ago
profound commentary, but I suppose there's not that much in the lyrics to read into ... except that for the longest time I kept on hearing "I know the way that I've had less than your beef stew" for the second line.

Weezer – Jamie Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, Insane J, I don't know who you are, but you're clearly a prick. Everybody's entitled to their opinion, obviously, and you don't have to like everything. There's bands that I don't like. In fact, there's bands I can't stand to think about. But you know what I don't do? I don't look for a collection of fans of those bands just to shit on them for what music they prefer to listen to. This also makes you an idiot, because, in such a large group of emo people, you're going to get shot down from every angle.

Reel Big Fish – Somebody Loved Me Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it's actually a combination of the two. The opening line references not just one person but "all of my friends," as if it suggest that they're at a point at which they feel betrayed by everyone, shunned, lonely, and unloved. Probably by significant others, friends, fans, record labels (lousy mojo bastards), etc.

Ben Folds – The Luckiest Lyrics 21 years ago
You're right, geigermatt, Ben is an atheist. "And I don't believe in God, so I can't be saved..." See also "Whatever and Ever Amen". Also, I read an interview where he says that he wrote The Luckiest for his wife and made her cry. Although, I suppose, there's no impersonal reason why the God metaphor couldn't still be applied. Having never been in love with any concept of a god, I wouldn't know.
This song is, as stated a billion times above, unbelievably beautiful. We've been giving a lot of attention to the old couple digression, but I'm also a huge fan of the line, "I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you." Simply put to describe the indescribability (sp?) of his feelings. What makes this most incredible, though, is when you stop and think about what kind of music Ben Folds (with or without Five) normally writes. Hard piano rock, crude, dark, and witty. That he is moved enough to write this inspite of his style is absolutely amazing.

Weezer – Jamie (Acoustic) Lyrics 21 years ago
Of all three versions, I think Weezer's acoustic is by far the best. The electric I'm a little indecisive on. I love Dashboard, really, I do, but I think he made some mistakes on this one - like, as scheisse said, the female background vocals. He does some neat emo sounding stuff (in my opinion, although I guess if you hate Dashboard you're probably repulsed by it), but it bothers me that he changes the ending. I heard his version first, so I thought is was just supposed to end on "It hurts me so much." When I finally got around to hearing Weezer's, I practically cried. Rivers' "I love you so much" is probably the cutest thing I've ever heard. I also adore the simplicity of the breakdown: "I am yours. You are mine. Show me where and I will sign."

Billy Joel – She's Always A Woman Lyrics 21 years ago
You didn't really need to be a shit about it, but I think you're definitely right about the song. So many songs and movies give the idea of a Mr./Ms. Right, who wins everyone over by being charming and sweet and the perfect boy/girlfriend. This is about love for the girl as she is, because her character is just that beautiful. Nevermind how she treats you, he maintains, she's worth it. She'll tease you and lie to you and hurt you and odds are she'll never fully trust you, much less love you for all that you are, but because of who she is it's enough just that she's there.

Goldfinger – Fuck Ted Nugent Lyrics 21 years ago
Actually, all due respect, I think you're both wrong. I think this song is mostly meant as a joke. I mean, definitely, they're pissed off, but if they were going to really try to "strike", they'da done it. Just like "Fuck you and your cat." We all know how good Goldfinger can be at being truly, truly angry ("You Think It's a Joke, Answers, ect."). They needed a joke on the cd, I feel, because of the serious nature of a lot of it.

Goldfinger – Here In Your Bedroom Lyrics 21 years ago
The weed thing is possible, but I think he meant "high" metaphorically. I always get the feeling that, for the most part, Goldfinger isn't into that much drugs. Sure, sure, there's the phone conversation at the end of the self-titled, and I think we can all agree that some songs would never have been written without the influence of drugs (e.g. Imagine), but it just doesn't seem to fit. In an interview, Kelly said that his idea of relaxing is to have a not alone and get high, but he wants it known that he's not a major pothead or anything. I would take that to mean that he probably wouldn't be high when he knows he has to interact with people, ie in the circumstances of this song. Of course, Kelly doesn't write, and he wasn't in the band at the time, so maybe I should just shut up now.

Goldfinger – White Christmas Lyrics 21 years ago
I've always wanted some band to cover this song really, really hard and fast and punk, because you always hear it slow and mellow. I wanna hear, "I'm" ostinato sixteenth note base, "Dreaming of a white Christmas" heavy, distorted guitar chord, snare, and cymbal; "Just like the ones I used to know." guitar echos the notes played on "Just like the ones" and so on. It'd be bitchin'.

Okay . . . so . . . back to the song, instead of debating whether or not NOFX sucks ass . . . whatshisface had a point, I feel. I mean, whether or not you think Superman is worse than Goldfinger's other stuff is a matter of opinion, of course, but it is really different. Next time you hear it, subsitute in your head John's voice with Billy Joel's from Green Day. It's very, very, Green Day. I read that when John met Billy Joel, he apologized to him for "stealing" his idea. He just laughed and said that he steals stuff from people all the time.

Goldfinger – Open Your Eyes Lyrics 22 years ago
Yes, punk is political, no, the song and video quite clearly aren't entirely about veganism, and yes, YES, the new cd is full of animal rights propaganda. John really, REALLY believes in it. The cover of the CD features some famous vegan guy and then, shooting for teh irony which Goldfinger specializes in, signs that say things like "Beef - it's what's for dinner" and "Milk is good for you!" Then, there's the Fuck Ted Nuget business. And then in the booklet there's a big long rant that John wrote followed by statistics and a quote, plus the graphically disturbing "Free Me" video on the enhanced CD, with footage of slaugherhouses and such.
And while we're at it, Goldfinger has not sold out. First of all, if that's what they wanted to do, they'd be SOOOO famous now, it'd be fuckin' ridiculous. Secondly, if they were comprimising themselves for the mainstream they certainly wouldn't devote an entire album to animal rights or have songs like Spank Bank ("Gay, straight, bi-curious just makes me furious") or shittalk MTV in Spokesman.

Goldfinger – January Lyrics 22 years ago
I think we should make a rule that anybody who is going to rant about punk puritanism is not allowed to post. I understand that we're all entitled to a certain amount of self-righteousness (as I'm indulging in right now) but just because somebody like Good Charlotte or Blink 182 or any one of those pop-punk bands doesn't mean they think they're the same kind of punk as the people who use safety pins to pierce their eyebrows in the dark! If they like music in spite of or because of the pop influence in it, good for them! You like hardcore, transparently, and nobody calls you fake for it, so fuck off! I know I'm raging now, but I've seen so much of this bullshit. Yes, Blink 182 and Green Day sold out a bit, but that works for them. They're mixing genres and putting a small portion of the blessing that is punk-rock in the lives of people who never even thought of it before. Punk rock does not belong exclusively to you. Anyone who discovers they like it ought to be welcome. Jesus Christ!

Goldfinger – 99 Red Balloons Lyrics 22 years ago
What I don't understand is, obviously, the German verse. I've attempted to translate it. Naturally, I expected the translation to be really rough, but it's not even close to the same as what German Nina's third verse is. Something like "99 nights of the air in super high-tech jet fighers. Everyone's a super hero. Everyone's a Captain Kirk." vs. "99 war ministers, match and gasoline cans...." I get confused.

What's most amazing about this is that, at least at this stage in their maturity, you never hear this kind of semi-seriousness from Reel Big Fish, and nothing near this kind of melancholy devotion. Goldfinger – Nothing To Prove Lyrics 22 years ago
Actually, I think you're pretty close. I think they started fighting because of something he did, and she left him. While he's trying to think of how to redeem himself, she comes back to him at 3 a.m. totally plastured. He wants to have her back, but not when she's too intoxicated to know if she's forgiven him. I never knew, of course, but I think she left again. He decides that even if he can't prove his worth to her, he will prove it to himself.
I fucked some things up with this one girl, and I listened to this song on repeat about a million times while writing apology letters. She never really did accept them, but I did. She forgave me six months later - or else she just forgot about it.
