It's not Midnight City but it's certainly the second best song on this epic double album. |
Bright Eyes – Clairaudients (Kill or Be Killed) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
[Cassadaga, oh yeah, that's where you're going to find the center of energy. And they've got those in Arizona too. You know, theres, I know that there's wonderful grounds that have vortexes. That you might be interested in going to. And the go to Nevada. And then go to California. And then come south and go back through Arizona. And go through Texas. You know what I'm saying? Getting rid of the old feelings of the old ways. And, you know, it's kind of like with people and the tarot cards. Just because you get the Death card doesn't mean death or dying. It means transoformation. It means changing things around... Cause I was pulling in on a, on a dog or companion Somehow I get the impression that your'e almost a little afraid to start the trip. It doesn't have to be a straigh line happy face. But make kind of a happy face, I mean kind of a smile. Go up, up the east coast, but it's gonna be a circle. You know what I'm saying? It's gonna be a sloppy circle. Dont' be afraid. Years and years and years ago, you know, you might, You might have come across some river and rock and the mountains or whatever. And then when you get there maybe you'll have the answers you seek. We have moved into a new era and life as we know it is changing. Your relationships, career, and location will all be subject with an energy. Allow me to share with you tips that will assist you during these new times. Don't give up hope on yourself, no. Just be paitent about the fact that .... how things are unfolding. Because ..... you're less ... why are you afraid to start? I think you should go. I think you should go. You know, plan ahead, pack the things that you think you're gonna need, And then just go. Cassadaga might be just a premonition of a place you're going to visit.] Most of the voice over. |
Bright Eyes – No One Would Riot for Less Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Entreat, I got the same impression except I was thinking something from Pink Floyd album specifically. I also get the impression that Conor has taken bits and pieces of Leonard Cohen and dabbled them into this song. |
Bright Eyes – No One Would Riot for Less Lyrics | 17 years ago |
he says on the youtube video it's about everyone turning on each other, but these two "people" don't turn on each other...they continue to love each other even as the apocalypse surrounds them take it for face value and just think the song is about being happy wherever you may be. |

Bright Eyes – Endless Entertainment Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The immediate drum roll to begin this song sounds (for about 1 second) just like the roll into Laura Laurent. The entire song seems almost completely obvious that he's saying he's done with sadness. He's done with his "endless entertainment" of his own trepidation. Thinking of the worst possible happenings does provide something to keep yourself busy, it provides you with something to dwell on. It's easier being disgusted and depressed than it is to pick up the pieces and work toward something that seems near impossible. Still with a little bit of apprehension on his part. He's looking for someone or something that he can keep this high part of his life going with. Once you get caught in that endless entanglement that is depression on stage for his audience. Even myself for writing this break down of this song. "Oh they try to write you down and hope you go crazy" It's saying in literal terms "Now you don't have to be content, but you do have to get on with it" A 'pick up the pieces and get the fuck moving' type song. A forgiveness of trespasses without a single apology. I'm not sure how it was meant to be taken, as I'm not Conor Oberst and I'm not even sure how I take this song itself. I could take it for what it's worth but who am I to mindlessly accept words from a man who has done his best saying everything through code. I've been watching Mr. Oberst for the better half of my life, I'm not sure if he's serious in his apparent happiness or if this is a set up for something ridiculously sad. Either way, I have to thank him for putting lyrics down on a pad of paper and bothering to pick up a guitar. We're all thrashing, waiting... |

Plastic flowers, The "post-modern" lyric is definitely hilarious. Seems like a bit of a crack at the ignorance of those who are hardline pm. I'm not exactly sure yet what the entire song is about. I don't think it's a great song...definitely different than most B.E. songs. |
The Format – A Save Situation Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a rather, self explanatory type of song. Probably the most beautiful song on the album. |

Bright Eyes – Southern State Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I've been to 5 concerts over the last few months and he's never mentioned anything about anyone. He introduces it the same every single time. I like that he played a country western song for his mother when he was playing in IU Bloomington a couple months ago. I don't have the slightest clue about the song right now. Or at least I'm not going to state what I think/feel right now. Listen to the trumpet, you'll die inside. |
Straylight Run – Hands in the Sky (Big Shot) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I would agree partially with the people above. However, I must say you can't think of the terms that they use in this song to be completely literal. By the term BOY, I'm thinking they mean how condescending we're being toward a nation of people. Calling someone boy would assume that they're a subordinate of you, and therefore you do not respect them as much. You're telling this country what to do, but you've never really checked yourself in the mirror to make sure you're capable of making delegations. It's about the hypocracy that is america and how we're never the ones at fault, but will damn sure take all the glory that comes to us. I also think the idea of him saying between the eyes, after he said...in the back of the neck is. We've got this country or whatever, surrounded. If we don't get you one way, we're going to sneak up and attack you from antoher angle. There is no escaping, we'll say we're going to do something...but you can never count us out of any venture. |

Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Zacharygarren, A lot of things about humans tend to be fucking disgusting. The point is it is a womans right. The idea is not to withhold rights, because in the end, the abortion will happen. It may not happen in a clinic, safely; but it will happen. In a back-alley, with a coathanger...but it will happen. You can't "give" the right, because you can't take it away. It's not something you can deny will happen, because it has, does, and always will. For those of you who don't like this song, more power to you. For those who do like this song, the same. I like Bright Eyes, so much so that I own every album. I can't make my mind up on this song, because I'm not one for protest songs; and I'm also not one who enjoys people putting themselves in a position as volitle as this. It's his choice to make this song, he's an intelligent individual and happened to have an agenda with this song. For those of you who think this song is a bad one, simply because it doesnt scream I love the president, fuck off. No one can honestly say they love every decision he made/makes, if someone did; they would be the most arrogant derelict known to man. out |

Bright Eyes – Saturday as Usual Lyrics | 19 years ago |
We can all agree that 'A collection...' wasn't his best, or near his best attempt. But we can all also agree that this song is one of the best from it. Appreciate art for what it is. And Congratulations to vancantjoshs for being an elitist, i guess we all are. |
Bright Eyes – Road to Joy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
waste_of_paint, This might seem a bit on the elitist side however, if you're going to listen to Bright Eyes I believe it's your duty to atleast sound intelligible. Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Dan, It's not ABOUT HIS brother, it's about someone ELSE's brother:)...I'm almost sure of that. I'm almost 100% it's about death as well...I mean, we're talking about a song that evokes such a message. Most people who "fill their arms" aren't exactly going to live long. The end of the song he sings Now I'm drunk as hell on a piano bench, And when I press the keys it all gets reversed. The sound of lonliness makes me happier. I think by saying pressing the keys he's saying that everything is brought back, he doesn't have to mourn him anymore because he wrote something to commemorate him for the rest of Conors life. And if in fact this is about a good friend, "the sound of loneliness makes me happier" would allude to his good friend being dead. Good friends don't leave you alone, they're always there. |
Straylight Run – Your Name Here (Sunrise Highway) Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Counting Crows – Mr. Jones Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"this is a song that has been misinterpreted greatly. Um, to say the least. I think people too often look for symbolism in songs when they're simplier than they seem. This in particular, is much simpiler than it must seem to a lot of people. I've heard everything from it being about some Ancient Blues man who taught me music, which is ridiculous but like somebodies movie fantasy. But i've also heard it was about my dick, which is even more ridiculous . Why do people go there? When we did the interview to Rolling Stone I walked with David Wild into the muse del se in paris one day and the first thing that happened was the two kids ran up to us and said "hey you're the guy from counting crows right?" and i was like yea. "is mr. jones about your dick?" i wanted to kill the guy cuz i knew where that was going to end up which is the first paragraph in rolling stone. it's really a song about my friend marty and i. We went out one night to watch his dad play, his dad was a flamenco guitar player who lived in spain. He was in san francisco in the mission playing with his old flamenco troop and after the gig we all went out to this bar called the new amsterdam in san francisco on columbus and we got completely drunk. Marty and I sat at the bar staring at these two girls wishing there was some way we could go talk to them. But we were too shy, and we thought, we kept joking to each other you know hey if we were big rockstars instead of such loser low budget musicians. We'd be able to, this would be easy. I went home that night and I wrote a song about it and i mean i joke about it, that story. But it's really a song about all the dreams and all the things that make you want to go into, doing whatever it is that seizes your heart. Whether it's being a rockstar or being a doctor or whatever it is you know. And those things run from all of the things that are pent up inside of me to i wanna meet girls. you know. cuz i'm tired of not being able to. And it is a lot of those things, it's about all of those dreams. But it's also kind of cautionary because it's about how misguided you may be about some of those things, and how hollow they may be too. The character in the song keeps saying, "when everybody loves me i'll never be lonely" and you're supposed to know thats not the way it way it's going to be probably. I mean I knew that even then and uh, this is a song about my dreams." Adam Duritz It's not about his penis indiana jones, moron. |

Kenny Chesney – Anything But Mine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I regularly don't like country. This song makes me think of those times you said things you didn't really mean, but in the heat of the moment..it felt right. It's funny how summer relationships take the course of all relationships in just a few short weeks. |
Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Here is my take.... I agree a lot with luckymonkey however, i think this has a little deeper meaning. "but me Im a single cell on a serpants tongue. and theres a muddy field where a garden was and I'm glad you got away. " I think the garden he is referring to in this song might be the Garden of Eden. He does write some songs with dual meanings, and sometimes meanings I can't figure out. I think he's writing this about a person with a sexual identity problem, and he's mad because of religion being the way in or around Omaha. He's mad because this persons family didn't accept the way he was, because they had religion. Thus explaining the Garden Of Eden theory. He's just a single cell, on the serpeants tongue. Meaning...he's just one of the reasons he feels ashamed, yet again, he's also a reason that he chose what he chose. Without the serpeant in the garden of eden, we would have no shame..... Just my take on that part...anyone else think the same? |
Bright Eyes – Road to Joy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
daddysgun, He's making a fun statement with that. If the world were a marathon, america would finish the 26 miles before anyone else started. I think this might be a statement against people who claim to be "godly" and whatnot. I can't quite explain what i mean, but i got the point of it. "we're gonna make em god damn certain how it's going to end" we're going to win, we're going to win and everyone knows it. We can't lose, but we're going to prove a point anyway...when there is nothing to prove. |
Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics | 19 years ago |
What my earlier post was trying to poke at is that this song is sarcasm against human society. Society tends to be inherently hypocritical. We have all of these rules that people must conform to, we have our god and we don't acknowledge him only when we need something. No one really wants to die, but once you do it's not like you'd really know any better. These are some ideas i think he's pushing in this song. Society is complete malarchy, and we shouldn't take ourselves so seriously. out |
Bright Eyes – From a Balance Beam Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I don't really interpret this song as hopeful. I think it's more of a cynical song about religion. "there was a man holding a megaphone, it must have been the voice of god" and all of the references to angels, and then one has a broken arm. I think it's about how no one really knows if their is a god, and if there will be salvation for us. How we're all just lemmings waiting for death to find out, and how faith really is just that, faith in the fact that there might be something outside of the physical being. When he says "i mean, a a miracle" thats a crack on people who call such things miracles rather than just being chance. HE's waiting for his chance to find out the truth. He wants to change, so he did, he didnt wait for divine intervention. I also think he may have attempted suicide at one point, and i know he's thought about it. no lies just love states that he thoughta bout it.....all in my opinion... |
Across Five Aprils – A Year from Now Lyrics | 19 years ago |
sounds to me like he's holding down a knot in his throat during the entire letter |
Bright Eyes – Easy/Lucky/Free Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It does sound like he's kind of saying that when the world ends. But i think it might just be about how the world is always at war. And that we shant cry for those who die, because they're in a much better place, atleast thats what we all want to believe... |
Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Ok so here is my analysis. *Intro* I think that the intro is really imperative to the entire song, because this guy, whom of which this supposed woman has never talked to, is telling her that they're going to a birthday party. Birthday party is really just a term that screams they're begining a new life now, and that she shouldn't be sad, maybe because he really doesn't care about life, or maybe he sees some sort of light that she doesnt. *first stanza* It is saying "we must talk in every telephone, get eaten off the web" These are just things that people get caught up into. It's like everyone in society has to "live life for a purpose" rather than actually live life. They're always doing busy work, instead of making themselves feel better. Also, it is putting social implication into question. "Into the eye of every criminal, we must stare" Instead of treating them like normal humans who might have made a mistake or two, we shall ostricize them, and distance ourselves from them. *second Stanza* "We must take all of the medicines too expensive now to sell Set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell And in the ear of every anarchist who sleeps but doesn't dream" He seems to be making fun of society as a whole, rather than make ourselves better for us, we are attempting to make ourselves better for other people. The preacher may not even be a preacher, he may just be someone who is looking down on you, that you try to conform. He is also making fun of people without vision, people who just want to be a cliche. ie the anarchist. *third stanza* It seems insanely funny that his father and mother are doing this busy work, and talking about getting back to god. His father is loading his gun, and it doesn't seem as if he's really trying to do anything really, he's being a hypocrit in a sense. **IMO** "And then they splashed into the deep blue sea It was a wonderful splash " Death isn't something to be afraid of, to be afraid of the enevitable is to be ignorant. We all must prepare, we all must be okay with whom we are. *fifth stanza* We're blending into society, with this stanza. We memorize social security numbers, but we don't know who we are. We sing in the choir, but don't know the words. We're trying to be something we're not, for the "greater good" of our concious. He's saying we've gotta leave this idea that money has power over us. Even though it might, it shouldn't be the number one priority. *sixth stanza* We still put too much onto material goods. We look back as if we have failed society, just because we don't have things. We tend to look back rather than forward, on mistakes rather than opportunity. and finally "I'm happy just because I found out I am really no one" I find true solice in this line. In the greater picture of things, we as humans are simply a pixle in the huge picture that is the world and history. He's not really found out anything, but he's found the biggest thing. It may be sarcasm, i'm not exactly sure. Jim |

Ryan Cabrera – True Lyrics | 19 years ago |
it could be religious..i saw an interview on tv today, his title track is about god. So you never know, but he also said that he wanted to it be open to perception. Whatever it means to you, is what he intended it to mean:). I relate to this song in a girl guy kind of mode, and i'm sure plenty of other people do as well. I don't usually like this type of music, BUT he does remind me of a cross maybe with dave and chris carabba...with a little less edge...just my opinion. out |

Taking Back Sunday – Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Acatinahat22, The idea of trying to personafy everything that something is would be the idea of knowing where its origins were correct? Thus, needing a vast knowledge of the music before they were influenced by it. London Calling is an awesome album, i own it myself, You should think about getting The Ramones - Ramones Mania, 30 greatest hits, its pretty good. People want to think they're "punk" when really no one is. |

Taking Back Sunday – Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
666...since when were you an authority on punk? August 27, 1990 You're 14 years old, punk to you is AFI, maybe you should think before you speak. Get A Copy Of The Clash, tell me when you're done. When you decide you don't know what real punk is, call me, and i'll tell you. Punk isnt even "alive" right now, just derivations of it. Punk was a movement, a society change. Punk was getting away from 10 minute guitar solos, and singing about things that mattered to them. Punk wasn't about wearing all the cool stuff you 14 years olds wear. So lemme tell ya, take your "The Ramones" t-shirt back to Hot Topic, buy an actual Ramones Vinyl, and listen. Maybe you'll have a clue after that. out J.Venrick |

Jimmy Eat World – For Me This Is Heaven Lyrics | 20 years ago |
i guess this song could remind me of a break.up song, but it could also make me remember a great time, a time where love was prevelant. I time of reminiscent thoughts. i think its looking back on the great times...and wondering if there is anything still there. "can you still feel the butterflies" refers to the times where you look at your bf/gf...and you smile..and you feel that thing in the pit of your stomach that makes you want to never let them go. It's seeing your girlfriend walking down the street, turning to your friends and saying "guys, thats her" i could be wrong, but thats my opinion out J.Venrick |
Switchfoot – Dare You To Move Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Yet another good song. Basically i agree with pretty much everyone but i'll try to break this down into parts and make it pretty clear what i believe the message in the song is. "Welcome to the planet Welcome to exsistance Everyones here Everyones here Everyones watching you now Everybody waits for you now What happens next What happens next" i believe this to be a reference to becoming what is "normal" in society, falling into your place, rather then standing up for what you believe in. They're encouraging you to see the fault in your ways and stand up for more then you would normally stand up for. "Welcome to the fallout Welcome to resistance The tension is here The tension is here Between who you are and who you could be Between how it is and how it should be" Again a reference to standing up for what you believe in. It is saying are you strong enough to show god in your life? If you are, you will reep benefits, but you must first show everyone of your love for Jesus Christ and God. It says "the tension is here" which is about society, because society in general tries to shun people who have an over-whelming faith, because we don't all have it. the rest of the song basically means to me atleast that we have a plan for us all, and we are meant to live that plan. Most of us rather fall back into fear, and temptation and we let that control us. God is challenging us, telling us that he's already forgiven us for sins we haven't commited, he's challenging us to make ourselves better, to live a better life, to not take no for an answer, to push limits. He's saying "where you gonna go...where you gonna go? salvation is here"..meaning he's already saved us, but we have to accept him rather then run from our materialistic point of views, and that we cant escape him. out J.Venrick |
Kill Hannah – Nerve Gas Lyrics | 20 years ago |
again a reaccuring idea in kh's songs...i believe this is also about drug use, but a lot about suicide. wanting to "sleep deep" is also a way of saying you dont want to remember, you dont want to deal. leaving the "nerve gas" on would imply that they dont want to "sleep deep" they really just want to die, and they no longer want to feel anything..because feeling is too much |
