I'm not so sure it's definitely about Hamlet. The first part of the song seems to be spoken by someone really vindictive of the Prince, but in Hamlet the only person to witness Hamlet's death was Horatio, his best friend.
However, the first four lines could be Laertes or Claudius dying, and then the following four could be Horatio seeing Hamlet die. Horatio definitely thought Hamlet was elegant, and Hamlet had quite the tongue in the play which could match the "not speaking" line.
The second half, however, screams Hamlet to me. Hamlet is yelling at Claudius for killing his father, yada yada. Hamlet's mother has already died - Claudius poisons a goblet meant for Hamlet, but his mother drinks it instead and dies. "You've loved your wife to death." Hamlet knows he has to kill Claudius, so he does. He stabs him and then forces him to drink the poison.
If it is about Hamlet, the lyrics are pretty backwards. |

my take on the song is that peter is vindicated by *being* spider-man, not throwing spider-man away
his hope dangles on a string, like a spider from a web.
he is vindicated, he's saying he WAS selfish (I am selfish, I am wrong - he says being selfish was wrong) and now he's right, and that all along, he knew deep down he had to be spider-man. he messed up but is straightening it out (I am flawed, but I am cleaning up so well) and he is finally seeing in himself why MJ loved him - for *being* spider-man, and not the peter parker he was trying to be |

This song completely sums up the feelings expressed in the movie. Childhood is the greatest time to live because you /can/ live as a child, but once you're all grown up you never even knew it. Being 'gold' is basically being 'young'. This song is basically a continuation of Johnny's letter to Ponyboy, hence the songname. "Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold" are Johnny's last words.

So, let me get this straight. You think that those who listen to these new OLP songs, because they are catchy, aren't true OLP fans? You're an idiot if you do. Why? They make the music, not you, and you're accusing them of selling out. Wouldn't that make you NOT a "true" OLP fan? I certainly think so.
Sure, yes, this stuff isn't as "intense" as say, Naveed, or Clumsy, but so what? It still carries a meaning. Just because the chorus is just the repetition of the same line, doesn't mean it was 'crafted' or 'designed' to be catchy. Maybe you didn't think of this, probably not of course, but you know, it could just be repetitive to enforce the meaning of the line. Repetition is a very important poetical device. OLP uses it in alot of their songs, before Gravity.

Chris is a good writer, but he doesn't put half the emotion Conor Oberst does. Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes, Commander Venus, Cursive) is incredible. Download any single Bright Eyes song. Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh is a good one to start on - they are both incredible performers, but I do think Conor puts more into the singing. He screams it so much his voice almost cracks. |
