Hot Water Music – Better Sense Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Chuck Ragan said he wrote the song at a time in his life when he was reading the work of environmentalist author Daniel Quinn. "As a result, I found myself constantly searching and yearning for an understanding of our human origins as well as what brought our culture to such a state of chaos where we've drifted away from a predominantly hunter gatherer lifestyle," Ragan told us. "This song was written after hitchhiking home after a long night in the woods where I ditched my clothes, covered myself in mud to fend off mosquitos, climbed to the top of a live oak tree on Paynes Prairie till the sun came up and pondered the reasons and ways where humans started to live more as takers than leavers." Ragan continued: "I'm glad no one stole my clothes. It would have made hitching home quite a bit more awkward." |
The Weakerthans – History To The Defeated Lyrics | 12 years ago |
John played this solo in Germany in 2009. "This one I wrote a long time ago. I was in a border town in Texas. I was walking around the streets of this border town, El Paso. I was walking around and I saw a man weeping in a phone booth and I thought that was strange. And then I noticed almost everywhere all the storefronts around the center of this town were Bail Bonds. And you don't have those here, and we don't have them in Canada. But it's where people go when their loved ones are in prison and they give over anything they own in collateral to get their loved one out of jail. This song is about that man who was weeping the phone booth. " |
John K. Samson – Cruise Night Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This one is pretty obvious. "This is a song about teenage boys and cars. For some reason teenage boys always want a car. I don't remember why. I have a car now and I hate having a car. When you're a teenager for some reason, in Winnipeg at least, a small town in the middle of nowhere. You have to drive to nowhere in order to get somewhere. At least that's how it feels when you're 16. On every Sunday night, all the teenagers get in their cars and they drive all the way down this one street in Winnipeg, then they drive all the way back. And then they drive back a little further. And then they park and get some ice cream and then they talk to each other. Mostly they just drive. It's really weird. They call it cruise night and that's what I call this song." |
John K. Samson – The Last And Lyrics | 12 years ago |
When playing this live John said it's about an elementary school teacher who falls in love with her principal. After writing it he wondered what inspired him and then realized it was the Simpsons. Edna Crabapple and Principal Skinner. Only this is set in small-town Manitoba, Canada. |
John K. Samson – Heart of the Continent Lyrics | 12 years ago |
When playing this live, John said "Heart of the Continent" is the the new road sign you'll see when driving into Winnipeg. It replaced the former sign (and Weakerthan's song), "One Great City." |
Thrice – Words in The Water Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I instantly wondered if he was giving a nod to Robert Bly with his imagery about feeding on words that taste like honey on his lips. Bly has a line in one of his poems that simply states, "eat the honey of words." |
The Velvet Teen – Pavlovian Bell Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Nearly 100 years ago, Ivan Pavlov and his dogs became famous worldwide for their demonstrations of what became known as conditional response. Pavlov would ring a bell, then feed the dogs. After a while, the dogs started drooling the minute they heard the dinner bell, whether dinner was forthcoming or not. |
Minus the Bear – Summer Angel Lyrics | 14 years ago |
When we made it to the garden, it was well past nine. Our hands came to agreement, as we walked in time. A jealous rose stole a thread from your skirted thigh. I clipped it quick with a flick of the switchblade knife. |
Alkaline Trio – Fine Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Two things: I'm pretty sure that: "I'm gonna wake up from this dream when nightmares land up on my street" is really "I'm gonna wake up from this dream with nightmares lined up on my street" and "And I wouldn't trade my head for all the aces in the deck" is really "And I wouldn't trade my hand for all the aces in the deck" Makes more sense being a playing card reference. Hand of playing cards...etc. |
The Weakerthans – Utilities Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I could be reading this incorrectly so forgive me if I am. California is suseptible to earthquakes, which are centered around the many "fault lines" that snake through the state. If you were reading fault as a negative, not as a piece of geography, I think you may be mistaken. |
Death Cab for Cutie – A Diamond and a Tether Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Should be, "From a boy who won't fly but will take to the skies if he thinks that you're about to say goodbye" |
Ben Nichols – Tobin Lyrics | 15 years ago |
At the surface, this song - and the entire album - is based on the novel "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy. |
Hanalei – One Big Night Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is best guess from a demo recording on their myspace page. I think it's about 99% accurate. |
Minus the Bear – Knights Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I vote prostitution. Piece of you for a piece of me. Exchange of money - usury is it really a sin if we both come out even? they got what they both wanted. |

Minus the Bear – Part 2 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Perhaps waiting until the correct lyrics are available would prove more useful than a first guess on a leaded album... |
Cursive – The Casualty Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Thursday...hahaha... Such a comparison shouldn't be made. One band sings truthfully about the evils of relationships to a depth that would shock any english teacher, the other sings about 'paper scraps' and business men hanging themselves. how punk rock. |
Small Brown Bike – Make This A Holiday Lyrics | 21 years ago |
everytime i hear this song, i think of a movie, where a guy is getting ready to leave his house in the snow, walks out to his barn where he keeps his old ass car, gets in, and starts driving along the highway, trees and forest on one side, then the road, then a short western style fence and a field of dead wheet on the other side, and he's driving and driving, then pulls up to a cabin with some smoke coming out of the chimney, and some girl walks out in a red sweater, and he walks up, they hug, and he goes inside. i get that impression, although it says "brother gone north" so its probably about family rather than some girl, but ya know. its imagination. -andrew |
The Ghost – A Letter From God Lyrics | 21 years ago |
is the ghost becoming a religious band? or is god the excuse for taking a big look at the world? |
The Ghost – The Exhibition Lyrics | 21 years ago |
i have no idea what hes trying to say with this. none. |
The Ghost – Red Slippers, Red Wheels Lyrics | 22 years ago |
the ghost is a band who makes their live shows all the better by adding one important aspect that most other bands. it has nothing to do with alcohol, or cheesy lighting or firework displays, but simply, short explinations of each song before they play. like "i wrote this one night when i was just about to go to class, i got to school early and i saw these people doing....." ect. that stuff to me, is awesome. to see his connection, and compare it to mine. anyway, after listening to this cd constantly after it came out, ive come to the conclusion, that this song is about mass media influence on weak, or uneducated people. to me, it seems as if hes mad that when he drives around, he sees all these kids who are so engrossed in wearing their hurley shirts, and having the sun glasses on, or riding in ghetto cars sportin' fubu, and he knows its all a marketed image, and the makers of the products they wear dont give a damn about the kids. the "few pretty faces, in ugly places, small towns where you would never stop" that continues on with the same thing i was talking about because its very easy for someone like britany spears to perform at a city outside of a larger city, to draw the crowd of kids who are either, completely isolated from a large city, thereby not having gained any experiance to the "tired schemes" that marketers put out, and/or are so dependent on image, that if its strippe from them, they feel they have no place in the world. he talks about how pointless trends are, magents floating in a metal sea. once the magnets float past another magent, or trend, the metal attaches onto that. destroying all originality and motivation for anyone to strive to be better. the world is fueled by the mighty doller. this song is great. the ghost, is genious. |
Thrice – In Your Hands Lyrics | 22 years ago |
the best part of this song... "i can try and count the times that i've been through this in my mind, but im running out of fingers, and i dont have that much time." wow..i've been there before. girls can be pretty lame. |
Thrice – Deadbolt Lyrics | 22 years ago |
he cheats on his girlfriend or wife or something. the water is sweet isnt water, its metaphoric of the temptation hes feeling for the girl hes with being so strong. then his lover calls from the hilltop, darling dont you know, the water is poison. thats like his conscience i think. and he bangs the girl anyway, then realizes he screwed up. pretty bad. |
Alkaline Trio – Radio Lyrics | 22 years ago |
this is the first song i learned on the guitar. definently easy in tune, but awesome in lyrical value. |
Alkaline Trio – Take Lots With Alcohol Lyrics | 22 years ago |
alkaline trio. alcohol influenced love songs. love influenced alcohol songs. |
Alkaline Trio – Hell Yes Lyrics | 22 years ago |
this song poked out at me as religious the first time i heard it. he rejects god, how hard is that to see? "i rejected the faith, in your holy rays, is what it comes down to" that cannot be interpreted as anything from a girl, what girl is "holy"? this song represents a lot of what i felt when i made the switch from christianity to atheism. where's god when you need him? sure as fuck not around. nice to know you put so much into something like that, and the fuck cant even help you out in return. |
Alkaline Trio – Fuck You Aurora Lyrics | 22 years ago |
alkline trio. king of double meaning songs. i bet half the songs that appear to be about a girl, are simply, not. rad. |
The Get Up Kids – Overdue Lyrics | 22 years ago |
im going to have to agree with bluebird on the note about this being about his dad. first off, it would compeltly work with his dad in the place of the person he's singing about. and if you recall old get up kids, i dont remember the name of the song, but the lyrics are like "if i tried, would you still call me son?" its on four minute mile. i think theres another song that kinda deals with his relationship with his dad on either that cd, or on something to write home about. pretty sad stuff. i couldnt imagine not being able to talk to my dad about stuff. rock on everyone. -andrew |
Blink-182 – Stay Together for the Kids Lyrics | 22 years ago |
i like the song, but everytime i hear a new blink song i laugh about how they're going to go under as soon as they run out of high school experiances to sing about. |
The Get Up Kids – Better Half Lyrics | 22 years ago |
damn... |
The Get Up Kids – The Breathing Method Lyrics | 22 years ago |
i think i like the intro of this song much better than when he starts singin. very good drumming, and the guitar compliments it nicely |
The Get Up Kids – I'll Catch You Lyrics | 22 years ago |
i sing this song to my girlfriend every now and then. she cries instantly. amazing song. |
The Get Up Kids – Newfound Mass (2000) Lyrics | 22 years ago |

Dashboard Confessional – Turpentine Chaser Lyrics | 22 years ago |
im thinkin its about a guy and his memories with some girl or something and hes trying to rebuild his life, hence "the new coats of paint, will not reacquaint broken hearts to broken homes". like, completly starting over. hell yes. -andrew |
Dashboard Confessional – Again I Go Unnoticed Lyrics | 22 years ago |
who cant relate to this song? seriously..100 bucks to whoever cant. |
Dashboard Confessional – A Plain Morning Lyrics | 22 years ago |
considering no one has written about this song yet, i guess i should start out with something more meaningful than "omg! this song is great!!!".. this is the first dashboard song i ever downloaded/heard and it got me hooked ever since, thereafter. this shit is the root for me, its amazing. as for the song, its obviously about a guys trip or something of that nature that hes tired of and wants to be over so he can be back with his lady. who cant relate to this? even if the "Trip" is something as simple as going to work. all the stuff he sees where he is reminds him of home. "and the people here are asking after you, it dosnt make it easier".. perfect example. this is one of the few dashboard songs that make sense right off the bat. i think he uses some strange style of writing in his other songs because none of them seem to really flow together lyrically, i mean, everything works, but it seems like some lines are out of place, or in the wrong order at times. maybe hes telling more than one story per song..who knows. -andrew |
