Brand New – Not the Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
What is Jesse singing in the background (behind "To be my babe") before the tempo change? Sounds like it starts "If we were…" and you can clearly hear "And would you want me." And what is the background line before "Prove me wrong" (if it is indeed "prove me wrong"; I'm not entirely sure)? It's driving me crazy not knowing these things!

The second time through the verse, it's "Burn it down/come around." And I think it's definitely "You set on me THOUGH you are not the sun," both times.

Brand New – Luca Lyrics 17 years ago
I’m about to sound like a liar, but in the lyrics I wrote down for myself, I did get that third line exactly right. I didn’t want to suggest it here though, because it doesn’t make any sense, and everyone else seemed to agree on what had already been posted. I feel a little redemption in being proven not-completely-crazy; however, it would be even better if someone could figure out what it means. They mention a space cadet in Welcome to Bangkok, and hearing “cosmonaut” I automatically think of the cover of Deja Entendu... With that in mind, “bloodletting this bedwetting cosmonaut” sounds like a metaphor for deliberately departing from (and possibly deriding) the “less mature” Deja and YFW… Doesn’t fit in with the rest of the song, though.

Hmm, maybe it is "to make a trap for fools" (and that's what the poem says) -- I'm just sure that it's not "in a trap."

Brand New – Sowing Season (Yeah) Lyrics 17 years ago
whosyourvladdy, great post. And it especially makes sense with the “I am not your friend” bit, as I’ve been wondering whom he’s talking to.

Also, to nitpick, I am absolutely sure that this is correct (“have spoken” and “setting”):

Is it in you now?
To bear to hear the truth that you have spoken
Twisted up by knaves
Setting a trap for fools

And fightoffyourdemons9 is right also; the line is:

Take all that you have
And turn it into something you WOULD MISS IF
Somebody threw that brick
And shattered all your plans

Since the song is about growth, potential and looking to the future, a hypothetical “would miss if” fits in much better there than a past tense “were missing.” It means, evaluate your life and make sure you’re dedicating your time to something meaningful, something you WOULD mind letting go of if you absolutely had to. After all, you’re not exactly making the best use of your years if you have no plans worth mourning.

The Von Bondies – C'mon C'mon Lyrics 17 years ago
What? Are we supposed to be ashamed to watch "Rescue Me"? :-P All I think of when I hear this song is firefighters.

I actually see how this was picked as the theme song to "Rescue Me" because you can easily read 9/11 into it. "Now we grieve cuz now it's gone/Things were good when we were young" and "A time gone by that now is through" recall the more innocent days, before "threat" and "terror" were commonplace words in the American vocabulary. I'm not trying to be political, but make sense of the song in a more specific context. It really does seem to fit that way.

Travis – Sing Lyrics 17 years ago
Did anyone else first listen to this song because it was featured on The Office?

I agree that it's about letting your guard down and becoming vulnerable enough to allow someone else to see your true self. But more than that, the line "the love you bring won't mean a thing unless you sing" is really telling... It's not enough just to say "I love you." Those words don't hold any significance unless you "sing" -- unless you're willing to bare a little of your soul and trust someone else to embrace all that you are.

Taking Back Sunday – Twenty-Twenty Surgery Lyrics 17 years ago
"Hindsight is 20/20." It's about the aftermath of any situation where you wreck a good thing in the hopes of getting something better. Not necessarily specific to a breakup, but that's what fits the best.

Things aren't working out exactly to your liking, so you think maybe the grass is greener on the other side. You don't see any downside to taking a leap and leaving your current situation (dollar signs doll up a picture perfect point of view). But once you do, you realize the value of what you had before (the view from this side's not what I thought it'd be, promised something differently), and by then it's too late to go back. Only when you've lost something can you recognize how much it meant to you. It's a constant struggle to weigh the certainty of what you have against the possibility of what could be (I do, I don't, I don't need you like you think/I do, you don't you just don't leave me alone). This song just addresses all the times where taking that risk is a big mistake. Monetarily, these eye-opening experiences cost nothing (twenty-twenty surgery for cheap). But by the time you’ve learned anything, you've paid a much higher price than the lesson was worth. It's not the quantity/quality that bothers you; it's the means.

The Beatles – Across the Universe Lyrics 19 years ago
I commented on this song three years ago. I still think the Fiona Apple version is weak.

frijolito_ts is right, this song was absolutely butchered at the Grammys... but what else is new. I don't know where these artists get the idea that "Oh, we're so awesome individually, so if you combine us, the results will be ten times as good." It just sounds like one big mess.

Who cares how kids learn about the Beatles, whether through I Am Sam or the Anthologies or their parents' record collections. The point is that they learn.

The Beatles – Glad All Over (Carl Perkins cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
The Dave Clark Five did have a song called "Glad All Over" but this is not that song. This is the Beatles' cover of an old Carl Perkins song. Beyond that I don't know much about it; hafta listen to Live at the BBC again...

Third Eye Blind – Good Man Lyrics 19 years ago
Stephan Jenkins is a master lyricist; let's get that out of the way. But the part that begins "How do you do it" gives me goosebumps. Every time. It's not just the words but the melody, his voice, the bass, everything that's happening in the song during that particular moment. It's without a doubt my favorite part of the entire album, and I would have put down my $15 just for that.

Umm, as for the meaning, it's pretty obvious. What SlickSerpent said. People tearing each other apart, only to mourn what they've lost in the end. Trying to cling onto something that you once delibately destroyed. But SJ has a way of taking the trite topics and making them unique with his words, which is what he does here.

Herman's Hermits – No Milk Today Lyrics 19 years ago
Don't mean to sound condescending, but there's really only one meaning for this (I think). Back in the day, you had milk delivered in bottles to your front doorstep... and the girl moved out, so milk is no longer delivered where she used to live. The guy reminisces about all the fun they had at her place, but now it's just deserted, and he misses her. I really like this song, it's a more mature side to the band.

Straylight Run – Tool Sheds and Hot Tubs Lyrics 19 years ago
Michelle's voice walks a very fine line with me, between lovely and annoying. Right now it's the former, but it might grate on me after awhile. Anyway, I feel that this song is kind of out of place on the album. It's really catchy (I like "this was a lost cause/it was") and upbeat, but not in the way the other songs are. Actually reminds me of J-pop in its style. I have no real insight into the meaning of the song as it's pretty self-explanatory, but I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the title. "Toolsheds and Hot Tubs"? I feel that "tool sheds" represent the hard work and maintenance that go into the relationship, and "hot tubs" represent the fun and carefree aspects of it... and the couple keeps going back and forth. But this is all conjecture, so I'm trying to find other interpretations. Maybe I just need to see them live.

John Mayer – Breakaway Lyrics 21 years ago
I think I've been confused. I just found the alternate version that everyone's been talking about - live and with John's commentary at the end. The studio version I've been listening to is definitely someone else. Now I'm confused as to who it is, but I'm still inclined to think it was written by Matt Mangano since he is credited at most sites and at mp3.com. Plus it's more likely for John to cover someone else's song than for someone to cover John's. Oh the confusion...

John Mayer – Breakaway Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm almost positive this is not John Mayer. The moment you hear the voice, it's obviously someone else. Matt Mangano was one of John's old guitarists, and he's the one who wrote and recorded this song. I don't know if John played back up or sang back up or what, but he's not singing lead and he didn't write it. Credit should be going to Matt Mangano. Not to say that I don't love John Mayer, but give credit where credit is due...

Anyway, I think it's about maintaining a long distance relationship, specifically between a musician and his girlfriend. Is the girl willing to wait for him while he's away on tour for months on end? And is he even able to "break away" from her to go on the road, and still be with her? Or would it just be easier to end it all, choosing music over relationship? A song that ultimately has no resolution... "Can I have my cake/Can I have you too?" is a brilliant line. Props to Matt.

The Strokes – New York City Cops Lyrics 21 years ago
It's at the very end.
I've been misled... when I downloaded this song it was titled "When It Started," and for a long time I've been wondering what the repetition of "New York City cops" has to do with anything starting. This clears things up. That said, this song seems to be about prostitution to me... Cops catching on, the hooker insisting that no one will find out. :P Interesting, but I think the best part of this song is the guitars, hands down.

Taking Back Sunday – Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team) Lyrics 21 years ago
Goosebumps, every damn time.
No one's going to read this, but I can't believe I'm not tired of it yet (boy do I dread that day). Lyrics: heartbreaking, bitter, meaningful. Music: when it goes into the break before "hoping for the best," I almost choke up. Vocals: that overlapping style is the shit. John and Adam complement each other perfectly. Listening to it right now as a matter of fact. Yup, still goosebumps.

John Mayer – 83 Lyrics 21 years ago
John does love the Police. Anyone have the "Any Given Thursday" DVD? The voice-over commentary is so interesting/endearing/hilarious. He keeps plugging the Police. Anyway, the first time I heard this song, I could tell I was gonna love it from just the intro. "Plot a course to the source of the purest little part of me"... really, everything was much purer back then. (Even the water and the air, technically.) All before we became jaded, disillusioned shells of our former selves. To me there's a sense of wanting to go back and speak to your six year-old self, maybe even warn yourself of what's to come and tell yourself to enjoy childhood. But there's also the sense of simply wanting to BE that six year-old again, which I definitely understand. The tone of the song is light, but if I think about the lyrics too long I get nostalgic and sad. John has a way of wrenching these emotions outta you...

John Mayer – 3x5 Lyrics 21 years ago
The lyrics are incredible and I don't think I can say anything about them that someone hasn't already said. But the instrumental break? When the music sounds like it begins to rise and he says "Guess you had to be there"? That gives me goosebumps straight out. Obviously John is an extremely talented lyricist, but people often forget his musicianship. It's amazing when just the sounds - never mind the words - can make you envision things so vividly. What I really need to do is take a road trip and put this thing on full volume with the windows down. "3x5" is John's favorite.

50 Cent – In Da Club Lyrics 21 years ago
Good music is good music, no matter what genre. Whether you happen to like a song for the lyrics, the sound or the complete package is inconsequential. Me, I happen to listen to mostly rock (I DON'T "hate" rap though), but I dig this song. I don't know about his style, and he's probably spewing some lyrics that I find offensive and meaningless. But DAMN if that shit ain't catchy. Why do I like this song? For a reason most people would find ridiculously pointless: "So come gimme a hug." That's not just any "So come gimme a hug." That's "So coMMMe gimme a huggg." So I like the song. No rhyme or reason. Like what you like.

hmm i think he might actually be saying "blame modern movement." anyway, i never get tired of this song. it always strikes me as kind of bitter, i mean he compares the person he's singing to to a dog... the message i get is he can't trust anyone but himself. great song, damn catchy.

The Beatles – Across the Universe Lyrics 22 years ago
i agree, fiona does sing well, and i like her other songs, but i think this one should have been left alone. maybe i shouldn't have said her version was "bleh," but blah. fiona's interpretation is definitely more somber, to the point where it makes her sound as if she's bored with the song. sometimes it sounds like she's singing it all in one breath. john sang it in a way that's equally serious but more full of life, more hopeful. i'm not sure about the guitar-playing, but i don't think it's the technicality of this song that gives it its effect. john is singing his lyrics in the way he intended, and i personally think his style fits the song better than fiona's version.

Jimmy Eat World – Goodbye Sky Harbor Lyrics 22 years ago
i suppose this song could sound like a suicide... the music is much more aggressive at the beginning, livelier, and then as it progresses it becomes softer and mellower, like life slipping away. more than the lyrics, it's the music that moves me in this song. for some reason it always reminds me of a sunset.

this is so classic. i love the lyric "you make me feel so brand-new" in almost any song (stylistics - "you make me feel brand new"). this person is so incredible that s/he makes you feel like you have a clean slate and anything is possible. not to mention the utter catchiness... sometimes my boyfriend and i just sing it, it's so great.

Simon and Garfunkel – Mrs. Robinson Lyrics 22 years ago
yeah, it's just about having an affair with a woman old enough to be your mom... i don't really understand all the details of the lyrics. the first part sounds like she's in some sort of institution (the files and the grounds), but the second part sounds like she's at home (the pantry and the sofa). i saw the movie three years ago and can't remember if the lines are specific to the film. the beatles reference is kind of lame, but simon and garfunkel are still one of my favorite "oldie" groups.

Green Day – Platypus (I Hate You) Lyrics 22 years ago
it's about come-uppance. like "i used to patronize you and it made me feel like shit, and now everyone's letting you know what they really think of you." actually the song kind of progresses from the thought of vengeance to a string of insults (my favorite cussing line since "bad habit") to outright murder....

i dunno, i just like to listen to it when i'm pissed off. loudly.

Green Day – Waiting Lyrics 22 years ago
it strikes me as a coming-of-age song... when he refers to "downtown lights" and feeling "dumbstruck," it's like you're suddenly pushed into the spotlight, into this entirely new stage of life, and it's all up to you... and you've gotta learn how to handle it whether you want to or not. kind of bittersweet. best green day song in awhile i think.

the first time i heard this song i actually got a little teary-eyed... it's like all the things we should say to our moms (or whatever guardians) - that we never actually say. the orchestration was a nice touch too, sentimental but not sappy. i also heard benji and joel didn't put any cussing on their album because of their mom.

damn i love this song. i never get tired of it. i think part of its charm for me is its almost 60's feel... actually the thing that first drew me to it was how it sounded as if the beatles could have written it. there's something about the melody that gets me every time.
