Just saw Dave and the boys play lastnight in Pittsburgh, he played this song by himself for the first encore, mentioned that Jane told him to get his head out of his ass and all that...just like everyone else had mentioned above. He also told the story that ProudestMonkey said about having Jane's heart in his chest and she had his....but he said that when she was born he always thought thats how it was. So just a slight variation there. Good song, wonder if it'll end up on a new album or not, and if it does....I wonder if it'll be a new Dave solo album or a full band song. Whichever it is, I hope it ends up exactly how he played it...acoustic and by himself. |

First off, Martin Sexton is one of the most amazing musicians ever born. If you do one thing in your life, it should be to go see him in concert! The very best version of this song is on "Live Wide Open" and it is completely beautiful. Martin's voice is incredible and this song showcases it like no other. Having said that, I think its pretty obvious what the song is about. Martin seems to write alot of songs dealing with a struggle one way or another, and moving on in life. |

maybe i'm going to deep with this, but I see this song being about death. "cause the world is awake for somebody's sake now" I see as...people are coming around for a funeral or a wake. please close your eyes woman please get some sleep I see as like...parting words, like "you've lived a great life, now rest easy. and know that if i knew all of the answers i would not hold them from you know all the things that i'd know cause we told each other there is no other way I see this meaning "if i could explain all the mysteries and secrets of life, I'd surely share them with you, but I don't so we both know whats going to happen" well too much silence can be misleading you're drifting, i can hear it in the way that your breathing we don't really need to find reason I see this as the last remaining moments of life...the silence makes you think the person is gone, but the breathing proves otherwise, and theres no real reason to have a reason to everything, sometimes things just have to happen. but at least we can sleep its all that we need when we wake we will find our minds will be free to go to sleep I see as meaning either we can all relax and be content with knowing that you are in a far better place now....or we'll all be at ease once we all get to afterlife. I mean thats just what I see, not saying its right. At the very least I can say that this is a GREAT song. |

several things are wrong with these lyrics beyond whats already been mentioned. just as the song begins, right before "you hardly..." it goes: "well can't you see that its just raining there aint no need to go outside.." After the second verse and after "no need to go outside" it goes: "aint no need aint no need mm mmm mmm can't you see? can't you see? rain all day and I don't mind" In verse three the real line is: "It's just so easy when the whole world fits inside of your arms no really need to pay attention to the alarm wake up slow mmm mmm mmm wake up slow" those are the best lines of the entire song, I'm not sure where you got the lines you posted. |

Hmm, thought I commented on this song awhile ago...guess I was wrong. I guess over in England there is a saying "think of England". This saying comes into play because supposedly mothers tell their daughters (or female friends tell other female friends) if they don't enjoy having sex with their husband, to "lay back and think of England", or in other words put your mind somewhere else and it will be much more enjoyable for you. Thats where the title comes from. |

Look on this site at alot of bands, and most of the comments are for songs that either A) were singles or B) ended up a video on MTV. First saw Martin Sexton in concert last september at "Great Day" with "The Clarks", "Stroke 9", "Glenn Phillips" and others... and I've seen him two times since then, once as a solo. He is absolutely awesome, his vocal range is incredible and he can play just about anything on that guitar. Anyways... This song is about self reflection, pretty obvious. The part of the song at the end when he immitates the "squeezebox" is awesome! |

This song along with all the others by this chick are stupid little highschool songs (case in point, she had a concert on the disney channel...enough said!) I agree with all the above posts that say shes a poser and a product of a record label. So every once in a while she picks up a guitar while shes on T.V. ...all she does is pick a cord and chime in every once in awhile..if shes even plugged in at all. I was HIGHLY repulsed when I saw that they gave this chick a spot on the stage at the Rock N' Roll hall of fame! What is MTV doing? This girl doesnt even play an instrument have the time...much less play rock n' roll music....so why the hell was she on a stage in the Rock N' Roll hall of fame?! The R&R hall of fame really needs to step up and start cutting back on some of these cheesy acts that take the stage. Hell I even saw a rap act going on in the R&R hall of fame....WHAT is that?! We're the top of the food chain, we can't help that fact. We may not always agree with what our government does, its our right to question our government...in other countries you and your family could pay the price with your life for doing so, but you can only question it to a certain point, because everyone in this country is afforded the pleasure to do as they please. If you dont like how the government runs things, question it, fight it, but what it comes down to is, if you dont like it...leave, become a citizen of some other third world contry, and just try to live the same lifestyle you were living here...odds are it will not happen. Toby Keith wrote this song and a bunch of others..simply because he can, he has freedom of speech, as you and I do. You judge the government and say its evil and this and that, and that Toby Keith was wrong to write this song, yet he never mentions the government, he goes simply on what every American was thinking and still is thinking since the cowards attacked us in that manner. To completely badmouth and bash the U.S government is to be ignorant if you dont do you're research. Yes the American Indians got a shitty deal, and yes slavery should never have happened...but look at what happened after WW1 and WW2. The U.S government gave millions and millions of dollars to rebuild cities in Europe...yes the same European cities we bombed during the wars, do you think the government ever thought they would be repaid? doubtful, they did it out of sheer humanity. Then lets look at all the money that was spent by the U.S government rebuilding railroads in Africa and India. After all this giving people still judge the government in a manner that disgusts me. The U.S government is billions of dollars in debt from helping other countries stay afloat and rebuild, yet people attack the manner in which our government chooses to defend the lives of its citizens. sorry, just read all the crap that was coming out of peoples mouths on this song and had to give my two cents. |

I too spent many a years in Catholic schools, k-12th and it shouldnt have taken you all 13 years to learn that Judas hung himself after betraying Jesus ;) Anyways...I just read somewhere in a concert review that Dave got all "worked up" during a recent concert while playing this song. By "worked up" I'm not sure exactly what they mean, but there must have been some deep emotions flowing one way or another, so obviously this song is near and dear to Dave. And the more I listen to this song I swear Dave says "...Now I just wanna run and DIE" not "run and hide" maybe its just me though *shrug* |

Dave has publicly admitted that this song is really about nothing. As far as the title goes, he named it this because his sister always begged him to play it, it never had a title but since she begged so much, he named it "the song that Jane likes" not because she said it was a good song, she just always wanted him to play it. Also this is the first song dave ever came up with. It's been long debated that "I'll back you up" was the first song ever written...but in actuallity Dave had the music for this song, but didnt have the lyrics...he then wrote and composed "I'll back you up" then came back and wrote lyrics for "TSTJL". "I'll back you up" gets the credit as the first song ever written simply because it was the first song fully completed. |

| I just saw dave and the boys preform on friday (august 2nd) it was an awesome set, played alot of great songs (look on his site for the setlist) i wish he would have played "warehouse" and "dancing nancies", but they did play "you never know" and "jimi thing" along with "bartender" and bartender was the highlight of the show! They jammed it out for a good 15 minutes, it was the best song of the night! Boyd was hammering the strings and bouncing all over the stage, Carter was pounding the canvas, Dave was nearly breaking strings, Leroi was turnin blue in the face, and Stefan was playin the hell out of the bass....it was unbelievable! | |

In the recent Rolling Stone, dave said this about the song "It's not the happiest idea in the world, thinking about dying and what your life means, "..." and the Jesus thing is an impossible comparison: Can God come out of the sky, take the form of this bartender in front of me and save my life?" Dave also noted that he thinks this is one of the best songs he's ever written...and that he was drinking alot with he wrote this song...drink on Dave! i think the lyrics "Oh, and if all this gold, Should steal my soul away. Oh, dear mother of mine, Please redirect me if this gold..." is the only time he's really talking about himself in the song though....those lyrics obviously mean "dont let this popularity/greed/money get to my head so that i become someone i'm not, and if i do, set me back on the right track" |

From what I've heard and read this song was written about the same girl he wrote "I'll back you up", "Halloween" and possibly "Recently" for named Julia Grey... Just think about this song as being the 3rd installment after "i'll back you up" and "Halloween" ...he's in love with a girl...proposes to her (i'll back you up)...she turns him down every time he proposes (7 times i believe) he gets mad (Halloween) dave still tries to keep her..(Grey Street)... "theres a crazy man creeping outside my door" ...could it be dave outside her door trying to keep her or get her back?? I know its not angry in the sense that "Halloween" was/is...but it all makes sense to me...anyone else see it?? I could be wrong but isnt the color spelled "GRAY"?? |

ok this song isnt about Ashley, i know for certain it isnt. As papabobdole said about this song is written about a girl who turned dave's proposal down numerous times along with the song "halloween" (which is a very angry song) I doubt Ashley turned Dave down numerous times. This song, "Halloween" and "Grey Street" were all written about a girl named Julia Grey, and "Recently" might have been written about her as well, i'm not sure, but the rest i am sure of. This is the first dave song ever written, he quit his job at Miller's after writing this song after he realized his talent was to be writing songs and singing on stage. The fact that he wrote this song and all the others from "remember two things" and the "Recently LP" pre-1992 doesnt add up to this song being about Ashley. |

this song deals with the ups and downs of life. Dave wrote this song to put his thoughts of suicide down on paper. He seriously contimplated it several times in his lifetime. "Then I look up at the sky My mouth is open wide lick and taste" is dave saying "i've been down, but i picked myself up...saw the brighter side of things...want more for myself then to end up dead. the lyrics "Sing and dance I'll play for you tonight The thrill of it all " is dave saying i'll go on, doing things for you, just to make you happy (the one time i actually think he's talking straight to his fans!) I love this song, the best part of the song is "dark clouds may hang on me sometimes, but i'll work it out" how can you not live by those words??? Just as a side note, as usual in concert dave changes the lyrics to this song...he'll usually add something about the city he's in at the beginning by saying something like "could i have been a *your sports team here* cheerleader?" funny how dave has so much fun with such a serious song. |

ok this song is FAR from a heroin trip, that is so far fetched! and this song has nothing to do with his wife. After watching "The Charlie Rose" show on 60 minutes 2, which was an hour devoted to Dave, I learned that this song is about his sister who was murdered by her husband in Africa. The CD "Under the table and dreaming" is dedicated to her (Anne i believe was her name) So that explains the "serious song" that dispatchoar talked about. This song was written long before he even met his wife i believe because on the Charlie Rose show they had tape of dave from his demo tape (from 1991 i think) entitled "Rutabega Studio" which dave played all the older versions of his songs like "monkey man" "after her" the old version of "say goodbye" and "the stone" (along with others...i think it had like 6 or more songs on it). so that kind of dates the song. You can download the "Rutabega Studio" from Kazaa or Napster but check the spelling of Rutabega, its sometimes spelled Rutebega and others Rutabega....its not all that great of quality but cool none the less to hear dave sing the songs like that. |

from what I've heard about the meaning to this song...dave said its about a girl (most likely his wife) but of course everyone will have their opinions anyways. going back to the whole bullshit idea that dave sold out...dave stopped playing the song "spotlight" on purpose. I posted the meaning to the song "spotlight" along with the reason why he stopped.. dave said "i dont want our fans to think we're full of ourselves" so anyone who thinks dave is a sell out should sit on that quote for a while. |
