Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero Lyrics 15 years ago
Love this song. The lyrics are a little abstract but they seem sort of like a double entendre. The imagery it suggests to me is someone (the zero) getting all dressed up and going out, maybe to an underground dance club. I love the line "shake it like a ladder to the sun", with the beat it evokes a person dancing around with absolute abandon. At the same time there's the double entendre of some sexy lyrics, (try and hit the spot/get to find it in the dark, Karen O's breathy delivery of the climbing higher line...) maybe even a little S&M? ("Get your leather on"!) There's also the intriguingly contradictory lines of the song's lyrics asking what the Zero's name is, while telling him or her that nobody will ask it... I think you could take a variety of meanings out of this song, but it's awesome no matter what you hear in the lyrics.

John Denver – Take Me Home, Country Roads Lyrics 19 years ago
Man, I hate the idea that thousands of drunk college kids scream this song as some sort of lame ritual. I think it's a song that has a lot of feeling behind it. It's a beautiful song.

A lot of people tend to think of John Denver as being dorky and cliche, but I love him; he was an amazing songwriter.

Neko Case – Look for Me (I'll Be Around) Lyrics 19 years ago
This is the most beautiful song. I can't believe the gorgeousness of Neko's voice here.

Jawbreaker – Million Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's kind of both, like ATIHIP. It's kind of a longing song, and a song that's rejecting the "sellout" image.

I love it for both.

Jawbreaker – Fireman Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song - my favourite by Jawbreaker, no contest. I think it's about a guy alternately pushing away and trying to draw in the object of his affection - who he feels he will destroy emotionally. What I've never decided is whether she comes back to him. I guess there are really no clues that she does in the song. He morosely says "I know you'll never come", but that could be just his pessimistic worldview... hmm.

Jawbreaker – Boxcar Lyrics 19 years ago
Guh. I don't think you can compare the Ataris to Jawbreaker at all. Jawbreaker is an amazing band, and is probably the most influential mid-90s band to a lot of the emo and pop punk happening right now. The Ataris are stale and uninteresting. They're the kind of emopoppunk (is it a genre yet?) that I can't stand listening to because it sucks so badly.

Compare "Fireman", for instance, to anything The Ataris have ever done and tell me there's something with the emotional depth, complexity, and lyrical prowess. Jawbreaker is a much superior band.
