odd song overall, but good stuff. the literal meaning's not too cryptic -- but i'm not of sure of the writer's motivations. the faint rocks, and let's hear it for strippers.

i got that much from it....but anything more specific? what's the casbah, other than a CA music club? and is the shariff just supposed to be the leader, or is it a specific one? great song either way....but i'd like to know if anyone's got the facts.

Mogwai – Punk Rock: Lyrics 22 years ago
this song is a sample from a strange iggy pop interview that the band found. from what i've read them say about it, iggy was looking totally fried and out of it (which is believeable), and when the middle eastern interviewer asked him about punk rock, he spouted off this insightful, eloquent speech about it. i think it says it all.

hey jerkoff....you're right, you've got the freedom to say what you want. and we've got the freedom to tell you you're a fuckin piece of shit, and that your opinions are fucking trash. so go and quote the first amendment somewhere else. just cause you got the right to say it doesn't mean what you say is worth our time. nobody's impressed that you can shoot off your mouth and then claim first amendment. i'll go out on a limb and guess that our founding fathers didn't have you in mind when they penned that. so go comment on slipknot or fucking adema or whatever flavor of the month hardcore cock gobblers you're into at the present time. leave the discussion of good music to people that have valid reasons behind their thoughts.

Blink-182 – Dammit Lyrics 22 years ago
"I'll tell you about punk rock: punk rock is a word used by dillitante's and ah... and ah... heartless manipulators about music that takes up the energies and the bodies and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds of young men who give what they have to it and give everything they have to it and it's a... it's a term that's based on contempt, it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism and everything that's rotten about rock'n'roll. I don't know Johnny Rotten but I'm sure... I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did. You see, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius, myself . And that music is so powerful that it's quite beyond my control and ah... when I'm in the grips of it I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about? Have you ever felt like that? When you just couldn't feel anything and you didn't want to either. You know? Like that? Do you understand what I'm saying sir?" blink 182 doesn't understand what he's saying....and it's a shame. mogwai kicks blink's ass, and i'd like to, too.

Radiohead – El President Lyrics 22 years ago
this song has nothing to do with an american president. drugstore's a british band (i hope we all knew that), and this song deals with the american involvement in chile a few decades ago. here's what drugstore's lead singer said about what went on there:
“Chile is a very tiny country, very insignificant, because it doesn’t really have that many resources, but somehow, around the ’70s they arrived at a democracy, and Salvador Allende was elected democratically. He was a socialist man with a lot of integrity, and wasn’t even, like, revolutionary or anything. He just wanted the poor to have land to work on. The Americans had some 12, 13 companies in the country, they still do. But I think it was beyond the companies, it was more a question of keeping the status quo. Because if Chile becomes a democracy, what about the next door neighbour? How about the next one to that? And the whole balance of the world possibly would have changed. So they teamed up with the army and generated one the of the most cruel, horrific military coups in the whole history of Latin America."
Salvador is the man that this song is about. it's a great song with great inspiration behind it. drugstore rocks.

hey cloudkamano...thanks for adding all the moist you did. david usher on his own or with moist is a musical genius that no one seems to appreciate. Ben Harper – Burn One Down Lyrics 22 years ago
anyone who ignores the drug references in this song is an idiot. the words are clearly drug-related. does that mean the song is about drug use? no. it's called a metaphor, and i'm sure we've all heard of it. harper, to me, is trying to get across his message of "i'll do what i want and you shouldn't care if it's not harming you" (which everyone has touched on) by using smoking pot as his analogy. the song is about drugs, but also so much more.

i'll be honest...the only reason i downloaded this song was becuase of your comment. i'd never heard of the lyndsay diaries before i saw your posting as "the most recent comment", but the lyrics and what you said about the song made me listen to it. and you're right. it's such a powerful song, full of so much emotion and sadness. it's very slow and somber -- which i'm not usually into -- but when an artist pulls it off like this, you've got to respect it. i'm a big lyndsay diaries fan now, thanks.

Blink-182 – Dammit Lyrics 22 years ago
i posted this on "stay together for the kids", but i can see it applies here as well. i hope it clears stuff up for those who don't understnad why we punks get so pissed over blink's behavior:
there was a time when blink was once one of the most respected punk bands around. (and just because i might post a few things about the band doesn't mean i ignore the music i love.) it's just that there are a lot of music fans out there who don't understand, and they all think we're selfish assholes because we call blink "sell outs". allow me to put it like this: ralph nader, leader of the green party, man of strong ideals. small national support, but his followers are die hard. and he is the man that keeps the green party at the cutting edge. what if he were to just jump ship to the republican party because the money and fame and powerr is greater there? he would be playing to a larger fan base and making more money, so it would be a great move for him. but what about his loyal supports and fellow green party members who stay true to their work and refuse to jump ship? that is what the punks are like. you see, selling out is a touchy term for us. bands like dmb seel out, but their fans don't lead a "dmb" lifestyle. there is no lifestyle devoted to saxophones, violins and nonsense rhyming. punk is a way of life, though, and when a band like blink exploits that, we have a right to be angry. does that mean we lose sight of what it is we stand for, or that we ignore the other bands? no. standing up for something doesn't mean you ignore your ideals. and i don't mean to trash blink's music. they are a talented band, and anyone who wants to can like them. but to me, their sound is becoming all too familiar with each new song. their growth as artists has seemed to stop. but, no, that doesn't mean people don't have the right to listen to them. everyone likes different stuff, and i respect that. i just don't respect blink.

Blink-182 – Stay Together for the Kids Lyrics 22 years ago
i'm not trying to discount the emotional element of this song. personally, i think this is a great song. my attack wasn't against stay together for the kids, but blink in general. and just because you can't understand an argument and aren't directly involved in it, that doesn't make it childish. passing it off as such makes you childish.

Something Corporate – Konstantine Lyrics 22 years ago
this is nothing like a high school trying to write like faulkner. while i understand your anaology, i gotta sya it's misplaced. this song only hits certain people -- you have to be able to associate with it. i've made all my friends listen to it, and you can tell who really "gets" it. not understands it, but can relate to the lyrics and the story told. writing like faulkner would be writing out of your league. this song is not all that complex. it's just from the heart. if we're going to start criticizing artists for doing that, um, the music we all love is in serious jeopardy.

Blink-182 – Stay Together for the Kids Lyrics 22 years ago
alright, it's like this:
the punk movement started for a reason, and that reason was in direct response to the hippies. the punks wnated to create their own identity in our culture and in cultures around the world. they did that through their who-gives-a-shit attitude, sloppy, extreme appearance, and most of all their music. they formed a solid group with powerful ideas on authority and the state of thge world. what they stood for was anti-popular culture. when a band like blink 182 takes that same attitude and way of life and music style and exploits it to become part of that pop culture, that is "selling out". and, as punks, we have the right to be angry about that. it's not just about the music where punk is concerned. it's about an entire lifestyle, one that we all live. blink 182 can kiss my --and all my true fellow punks -- asses.

Thursday – Understanding In A Car Crash Lyrics 22 years ago
doesn't everyone know who neil young is? i'm surprised his song "the needle and the damage done" hasn't been mentioned (unless i overlooked it). if you haven't heard that song, do so. it is about drugs, but mostly about losing loved ones. i think that is hwere it fits into this song. and the white lines being the ones on the road helps clear that up. so while are clear drug references, i don't think they are meant to imply actual drug use. it's just clever use of language, or as it should be called, poetry. this is a great song, and the fact that it's lyrics have sparked such a debate is a testament to that greatness.
