Placebo – Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush cover) Lyrics
| 9 years ago
|
While I haven't read what Kate Bush meant by it, I just keep coming back to the phrase "that hill." What hill? What hill is well known enough in our culture to be referred to so casually? And is often used as a metaphor for suffering?
Calvary, the hill that, in Christianity, Jesus was crucified upon.
Does that change the view on this? |

Thomas Dolby – One of our Submarines Lyrics
| 12 years ago
|
He speaks in this video about how his uncle was a submariner who died in basically the way described in the song, but it also refers to, or is at least emblematic of, the decline of the British Empire.

Leonard Cohen – In My Secret Life Lyrics
|
The final lines say an awful lot:
I bite my lip.
I buy what I'm told:
From the latest hit,
To the wisdom of old.
But I'm always alone.
And my heart is like ice.
And it's crowded and cold
In My Secret Life.
So both reality and his secret life are cold... |

The Jam – Going Underground Lyrics

You have great taste, but are kind of an idiot. This song came out in 1980. The Ramones formed in 1974. The Misfits were formed in '77.
But I would say that this, along with Jim Carroll's People Who DIed, were probably the last great gasp of punk rock. |

Iggy Pop – I Wanna Be Your Dog Lyrics

According to Please Kill Me (which, if you haven't read, you really must), Iggy thinks it was a mishearing of the old blues song, "Baby, Please Don't Go." |

You do realise that this was recorded BEFORE Bowie's version, right? Although they wrote it together, I believe. |

Placebo – Meds Lyrics
|
This album is probably the least enigmatic of their albums. It's all extremely clear, comparatively, what the songs are about.
Obviously, this is about someone who didn't, well, take their meds. And more, it's about the person who is worried that they didn't, and blaming all mood swings on medication (or lack thereof.) |

Placebo – Infra-Red Lyrics
|
This song is a threat, pure and simple. Given the tone and theme of the album, it is probably about a psychotic (likely the person mentioned in "Meds" who, well, forgot their meds) who is after someone who made him angry. "Coming up on infra-red" is a way of saying you're about to lose it, and he continues the metaphor with "I can see in the dark."
The biggest question I have is about the line, "I came down to crash and burn your beggar's banquet." Is this possibly an intentional reference to the legendary Beggars Banquet label? Perhaps something about Peter Murphy? |

Elton John – Bennie And The Jets Lyrics
|
Sohotritenow:
A) Acid and LSD are the same thing.
B) Elton John DOES NOT write his own lyrics, they were written by Bernie Taupin during this time.
C) People are trying to find too much meaning. It's just a fun song about a rock band. |

Placebo – Pure Morning Lyrics

Boxing clever is a phrase used to mean avoiding what is coming to you, especially if it is harmful. In boxing it means avoiding being punched.
What this means in the context of the song, I have no idea. |

Instead of Bust a move, tock, it should be "Bust a move, Doc!" As in Dr. McCoy.

Apoptygma Berzerk – Eclipse Lyrics

One of the great songs about first contact with an alien civilization (and, yes, there are others). What will it be like? This takes a huge page from "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke. |

Personally, it's one of my favorites. But, like much of the Pogues, it's a story, and most people don't comment on storys that are this blatant. |

Alphaville – Guardian Angel Lyrics

Such a beautiful song . . . . Is it about a lover? Perhaps (as I think at 9pm, my 7 yr old's bedtime) a parent? Maybe even a stranger. It's about that need we all have for contact, for touch, for company. Sometimes, it doesn't even matter who it is, as long as there's someone there for you.
Similar in theme to Peter Gabriel's "Touch," but much bouncier. |

VNV Nation – Beloved Lyrics

This is the simply one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard. These words aren't simply lyrics, they are poetry, and, as good as the music is, it is merely a complement to them. |

Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics

Whereas the urban legend I heard was that it was about a childhood tragedy - his best friend was drowned at camp while he watched, and that, when Phil made it big, he invited the killer to sit front row and stared at him all thru the song. Just goes to show that the bullshit is everywhere. |
