Dave Matthews Band – Crush Lyrics 21 years ago
Crush is a beautiful love song, but I think there's also some insecurity. It's when you know that you like/love the person, and you think they might like/love you back but you're not sure yet. You can especially see this with lines like "I want you so badly." He talks about doing things, which almost seem one-sided, like he's made all these plans for them and their future. He'll do all things for her, if she'll let him. "Just let me always."

On Storytellers he said that he wrote it thinking about his now wife Ashley. At a Dave solo show last fall he said he took the inspiration for the beginning word of the song (crazy) from Willie Nelson's song "Crazy" that Patsy Cline made famous.

Crush is the song that really got me hooked into DMB. I remember listening to this song over and over again in the fall of 1998. I love it. I have heard it 10 times in concert now- at full band, Dave and Tim, and Dave solo shows and each time was amazing.

Dave Matthews Band – Love of My Life Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't know what pyramusthis is talking about- it is not a Sting cover. Dave wrote this song with Santana. It is a song expressing his love for his wife. It's beautiful! Too bad Dave hasn't written more songs like this one.

Dave Matthews Band – Where Are You Going (Busted Stuff version) Lyrics 21 years ago
Dave has said that the song is ambiguous, and to try to prove that to himself, he has dedicated it to farmers at Farm Aid (2002), for "peaceful solutions" (10.24.02) and for soldiers (D&T tour 2003).

But I think the song was written with a woman in mind (his wife most likely). He is saying "no matter where you go or where life takes us, I'll be there by your side." As Dave has said in interviews, home is wherever his family is. So I'm not sure why Dave wants it to be "ambiguous" when it has a universal message in the context of "I'll always be with you." It's actually one of Dave's most universal songs.

Billy Joel – The Entertainer Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is a commentary on "pop" bands and really the whole music industry. Billy is saying that those kind of bands are superficial and aren't real musicians- where it doesn't matter what they sound like but what they look like. I think this was a sticky point for Billy, because we all know that he is very talented, but he doesn't have the "pretty face" of a lot of "one hit wonder" groups. So maybe he was fed up with people focusing on looks rather than musical substance. It's definitely a commentary on the music industry.

Billy Joel – Shameless Lyrics 21 years ago
This is a great song- Billy should have released it as a single instead of giving Garth Brooks a #1 hit with it! lol This song is about a woman that he likes more than she probably likes him back (which of course gives her all the control). He doesn't like feeling out of control because he's used to having power in everything else in his life. He can usually control the outcome, but not with her. ("It's out of my hands.") But he decides that she is worth the risk.

Billy Joel – And So It Goes Lyrics 21 years ago
Just a little tidbit about this song- my dad heard that it was supposed to be on "An Innocent Man" but it was too depressing for that album.

Billy has said that this song is about his manic-depression.

Billy Joel – This Is The Time Lyrics 21 years ago
This is about enjoying the present, because things inevitably change, even if we wish they didn't. It's about not taking anyone important in your life for granted, because you never know when your relationship (or even life) will end.

Billy Joel – Uptown Girl Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is clearly about Christie Brinkley. She grew up with a more affluent background than Billy Joel. I think there is some insecurity in this song. He talks about it like "maybe someday I'll be good enough for her, maybe she'll like me for me even though I don't have the same background." That really makes the song universal (as Billy's good at doing) because we can all think of trying for the "unattainable" person and hoping they'll see us as we are. And look where they are now- divorced, and Christie's with her uptown boy! But this is still one of my favorite Billy Joel songs.

Billy Joel – No Man's Land Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about mass development. I'm sure Billy was thinking about Long Island when he wrote this. "No major industry, just miles and miles of parking space." Strip malls? Yep. It's also a commentary about how our lives are more focused on the media (TV especially) than actually living.

Billy Joel – Goodnight Saigon Lyrics 21 years ago
Another thing about this song is how they were so eager to join the military at first (as a lot of soldiers are) but they quickly learned the realities of war. Billy is such a great storyteller- you can picture it even if you haven't lived through it.

Billy Joel – Pressure Lyrics 21 years ago
Pressure is about growing up. It's about being sheltered and then finally having to face the "real world." It's about being naive and seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, but suddenly having to deal with life head-on. "Even you cannot avoid pressure."

It is very 1982 with the synthesizer, but that adds to the song!

And weezerific, Sesame Street is a children's TV show (I feel old!). It is on PBS stations, which in New York is channel 13.
