this song is encouraging us to make our own moments and memories to life for our today... not live to perform our expected duties for the previous ones before us...

Led Zeppelin always seemed to have a political statement to make here and there......They were a true part of the HIppie rebellion in the Late 60's and 70's......This seems apparent in such songs like Misty Mountain Hop.......Anyhow....I kinda get a feeling of how the masses were really disappointed wit hthe way things were being handled by the government and such......
"How keen the storied hunter's eye prevails upon the land To seek the unsuspecting and the weak; And powerless the fabled sat, too smug to lift a hand Toward the foe that threatened from the deep. Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand Adrift upon a sea of futile speech?
Kinda sounds like the futile governmental processes that seem to prevail since Vietnam.....Lots of futile promises and unkept promises......Who knows?....I don't think it's the whole meaning behind the song because Vietnam was pretty much over in 77'...but we never officially left either.....go figure......I can see some of the references to groupies and the tour too....Don't know if there is supposed to be any correlation or not.......Maybe it's just kind of a look at how glamourous and wonderful life seemed for them not too long before...Now look at the state of things......
I also think that the last line is a warning for future generations........It kinda falls in line with the above idea of what has the world come too.....Maybe feeling that it was too late to make any changes in their generation...It's up to ours to make those changes.........Take of the fruit, but guard the seed.....We all need to stop taking advantage of our now seemingly abundant resources.....Or soon we will consume ourselves out of house and home......Guard that seed.......Replant what you destroy.....Leave something for the others who follow so they can taste the same sweetness you enjoy today......Just some thoughts ;) |

I had heard Stairway to Heaven....thought Zeppelin was cool.......lol....Then heard this song on a road trip smokin the ganj....Stoned off my ass....It was an amazing experience.....I realized at that moment that I had been mislead......There was a lot more to Zeppelin than Stairway to Heaven.....It was an enlightenment......This song is almost the epitome of good moods.....They sound like they are having so much fun recording this song......It's one of the best.......Everytime I hear it I feel like I'm hearing it for the first time!......Good stuff....... |

Ok Ok Ok.......Seriously......Trying to wade through all the Bullshit postings to find those that actually have something to say is a challenge with this one.....
Let me start by explaining why to have a favorite Zeppelin song is an impossibility.....See if you can follow on this train of thought....ALL ABOARD!.....Ok....If you have a favorite song....Tommorow you actually listen to Over the hills and far away...or That's the Way...Or Goin to California.....Etc....At some point...You will find a song that fits your present state of mind a little better than Stairway to Heaven or the song that currently ranks highest on your list of greatest songs ever.....At that point.....Your previous first palce.....drops a notch...now it's second......Holy shit!...You just dissed the greatest song in the world....Now you find yourself in a quandry......Is it possible that the greatest song in the world is no longer your favorite?.....Is it really the greatest song in the world then?........Lesson: Don't declare a favorite......I bet you'll have room in your soul for more than just one favorite......
So Stairway to Heaven is the greatest song of all time..Forever...Infinity and Beyond.....Bullshit......It is a great song...Amazing composition.....great talent from all the members in the band shine through on this one......BUT.....I can see why this song bugged after a while.......Look at it from the bands perspective...Seriously try for a minute.....You've got a song it's pretty good...Your satisfied enought to put it on an album...with several other songs that you feel are pretty good......All of a sudden the world decries....A MASTERPIECE!...Your High Point!....You will never reach that level of creativity again!...Even you can't top your own best work.........So now the band is thinking...well It's too early to retire.....So what do you do.....Follow me?
To all those 12-13-14 year olds and others out there who have only heard this song.......I agree Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever......I personal feel inspired to try and create decent, beautiful music with soul and meaning when ever I hear their music......Nothing that has been released by any band since has been able to hold a candle up to it....Not to say there hasn't been some incredible music since.....But nothing as deep and intensely soulfelt......
This is only one of Led Zeppelin's many many songs that have a beautiful Chemistry......I would not recommend this as a first Zeppelin song tho...Or like 3/4 of the lost souls posting for this song.....You'll end up in a rut, Making an entire CD of nothing but this track burned 10 times......That migth cause some damage ya'll.....Broaden your horizons........Buy the album......IV is a terific album....You might be surprised with the sound of some of the otehr songs.....Then broaden even further.......Zeppelin has some of the most emotionally charged Blues you'll hear.....I can't quit you babe......Give that one a spin........Going to California or That's the way......Such beautiful Acoustic songs, they'll bring a tear to your eye.....
In short....Look...This song is great......But there isn't a single Zeppelin song that I have to skip tracks because it's a bad song.....Not One!....That's incredible for a band with as many albums and such a variety of sound........Do me a favor...Listen to a little more Zep...Be open minded......Then come back and post another 100 comments that say you see my point......you'll thank Me I guarantee......

One other little note ya'll........Ok these dudes were serious hippies too......Look at songs like Misty Mountain Hop.....Sister and brother are common terms for freinds and others.....So he may not litterally mean his little sister......Plus the hippie movement is also about doing what you can to help those in need.....
I could see the man to be hung asking those Passing by to do what they could to help this man in dyer need....Any stall tactic might be neccesary.....The lyircs kinda tell it like this....(In a more lyrical sense of course ;).....Oh wait!...I see my brother riding from many a mile off...(could probably see the dust rising from the crossroads eh?)....In other words, Let's wait for him to arrive before you hang me.....Something like that...Makes sense doesn't it?.......I agree that the hangman is a dirty rotten Bastard......But that's the way......Very very good song...... |

I see a lot of varying ideas of what this song means here....good stuff....For me this is one of the greatest and most powerful zeppelin songs....and I have a really hard time declaring favorites.....All zeppelin is amazing...But this one stands just shoulders above the others I think....FOr me this is a song about rebirth....A new beginning....a second chance to do things right from the first...Sometimes life presents us the rare oportunity to recreate ourselves...be reborn.....like a pheonix from the ashes....This song encompasses that entire jubilant, vibrant life that comes from such new beginnings...
A few lines in particular that stick out for me are of course...
The sea was red and the sky was grey, wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today....Living for the moment leaves a lot of wonder and excitment about tomorrow....I mean if today is this amazing, what might tomorrow hold....
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born.....I see a knight on horse back forever searching for the perfect soul mate...it maybe a hopeless journey...but the optimism that I feel coming through in this statement is very reassuring.....
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams,
Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems.....If Led Zeppelin, who is standing atop that very mountain of dreams.....is telling me it's not as hard as it seems?....What do I stand to lose....
This song is pure energy, love and inspiration......A master piece.....I feel if you open your mind as well as your ears, there are some beautiful lessons Zeppelin can teach us all....
But all I really have to say is....this song is playin as I find myself ramblin'......I've made up my mind to make a new start.....Goin out into the world with an achin' in my heart......Peace and love ya'll...... |

I tend to hear bonham coming through in this song...Ever seen song remains the same?.....If you claim to be azeppelin fan and haven't...somethins wrong ;) ......anyhow......Bonham's got a gorgeous old truck totally pimped out.....He was the total car guy.....I think Robert Plant "just can't stop tlakin about love"....uses any analogy he can to talk about girls, sex, all that jazz......He's a sex god....not many can pull it off....but he does it Famously! |

Ok ok ok......Yeah.....I love LOTR....I was really excited to find out about the reference at first too..But I think ya'll are getting a little sidetracked here...This has got to be one of the greatest songs...But then again..I feel I say that with all Zeppelin....This band is transcendental...not of this realm....amazing.....This song in particular is very personal for me...It is a travelling song.....There are times in life when you must leave the things and people that you love and cherish....Leave it all to find a new beginning....This song beautifully captures the fear and excitement tinged with sadness that comes when taking the first step on a new road to destination unknown....I feel this song in my heart always.....Choosing a favorite Zeppelin song is like trying to choose a favorite child......But this one is unique and very special...Listen to it again for the first time......I find my self becoming enveloped in the power of this song everytime I hear it :) |

Ok....to pick a favorite Zeppelin Song is like trying to pick a favorite child...almost impossible to do.....Butif asked my favorites...this is always up there......It floored me the first time I heard it.....It always stops me dead in my tracks whenever I hear the first few chords.......I love the philosophical side of Zeppelin that comes out in some choice songs...."And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers, But all that lives is born to die. And so I say to you that nothing really matters"....Classic example of the buddhist idea of impermanence....nothing can ever last as it is today...tomorrow it will be different.....that's the way.....That's the way it's gonna stay.......Don't take the flowers for granted....Take the time to kiss them today......If you've never heard any Zeppelin or If your trying to turn someone on to the beauty of this bands music....This would be the first track I'd play....... |

Ok...I can't beleive no ones posted for this one yet...So I'll do the honors.....I think this is a great song.....The guitar and the harmonica are very playful and happy-go-lucky......It really seems to fit the mood of the song....Basically talkin about another woman (these guys never had a lack of infatuated hippie chicks ;) This girl left him hard up......maybe she didn't like the pickup line...thus the beer in the face....who knows?....any how, it doesn't seem to be a big deal...I know your sisters too!...gotta love it.....I like the plane in the beginning too.....just a nice accent to the carefree lovin this song is all about..... |

It's funny how many times I already love a Zeppelin song and then love it even more once I figure out the lyrics. I've been in his shoes before. Waiting for a girl all excited to see her. This song is great. I love how the lyrics, the music, the feeling of it all express the same thought and emotion. It's talking about how down you can feel when things are tough. You feel that it's all going to crush you in despair. But they're saying that the light will help get you through. there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. I like the line about wanting to "share your load". What it says is true. If you have good freinds or a good lover then everything doesn't seem so hard. Sometimes it helps to have others get you through the hard times. I always feel like I have Zeppelin to get me through and into the light. ;) |
