Katie Herzig – Wish You Well Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with beatmess66, I don't think that this is a breakup song at all. I think it's about someone who passed away who was close to her, maybe a relative.

I never paid much attention to the lyrics of this song until I heard Bitch cover it at a concert once (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyURowIFAIg). It changed my freaking life, this is an amazing song.

R.E.M. – Try Not To Breathe Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think its literally suicide as much as just not existing. That irrational desire to disappear you might have when you're depressed. Eyes of the old don't really have to refer to someone actually old, just someone who might feel old or tired. And grave could be a metaphor for that mental location, while "something to fly over my grave" is inspiration, newness, hope, light, etc. I hope that makes sense.

Dar Williams – February Lyrics 16 years ago
This song breaks my heart.

I'm going through a slow breakup now.

When she sings: You said, "I still love you" it hurts so much.

Bright Eyes – No Lies, Just Love Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is amazing. Especially that last part about wanting so much to be pure.

It's obviously about contemplating suicide - that's pretty obvious. The symbolism of winter and spring for depression and happiness is fairly common in a lot of his songs. He also tends to talk about warm places being places of of refuge (California, Florida) and that might actually be somewhat literal. Seasonal depression is pretty common. The song makes me think of a line from a Dar Williams song:

And when I chose to live
There was no joy, it's just a line I crossed
It wasn't worth the pain my death would cost
So I was not lost or found

Both of these songs mean a lot to me.

Bright Eyes – Gold Mine Gutted Lyrics 18 years ago
Let me just start off with saying that I absolutely love this song, and I didn't pick up on the drug references immediately either. I do agree with Trailertrash49, it's about a lifestyle not just the cocaine. I love the metaphor of stray dog freedom and I think that it references love. Talking about splitting a bag immediately afterward just paints a really clear picture for me. I also see it as nostolgic, and I think that the part about his lagging behind implies that whomever he's talking about has died. My favorite line is also, "when the smoke came out our mouths on all those hooded sweatshirt walks you were a stroke of luck we were a goldmine and they gutted us." I don't know why that stands out so much...but it's so beautiful.

I love this song. The first few lines are my favorite, but I think the baby crying is about being helpless.

Joanna Newsom – This Side of the Blue Lyrics 18 years ago
As an art history major, the Camus and semiotics references are enough to make me excited. This song is brilliant and by far one of my favorites on the album.

Bright Eyes – June on the West Coast Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song so much. It's so amazingly beautiful. The last part absolutely destroys me, and the part about Mesa Arizona makes me think of somene everytime I hear it.

The one part which I'm most curious about is: "and it hurts that he’s still shaking from those secrets that were told by a car closed up airtight and a heart turned cold" This could be taken so many ways. At, I thought about maybe a child being left in a car, just because of the "heart turned cold" part which I believe is metaphorical, not literal as previously suggested. But it really could be about a suicide or an attempted suicide. It doesn't have to be his brother either, it could have been the suicide of a relative or someone close to him. I really want to know what it's about.

I work in customer service and the other day I got a call from someone in Winnetka and I was so excited. But she turned out to be not very nice, which totally ruined my day.

Just a question, I listened to this song for the first time a little while ago, and it sounded awfully familiar...do I know any part of this from anywhere? Please help :)

Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think it really matters if it's about an eating disorder or a coke problem - it's about self destruction either way. However, I'm pretty sure he's talking about a coke problem. The "eyes all painted black" is literal; these are people out at night - and an eating disorder is not the only thing that will make you thin - a coke addict is going to be pretty skinny too. My favorite part of this song is when he says "but me i'm not a gamble you can count on me to split" I have never heard the word "me" sound so beautiful.

Absolutely amazing. I cry whenever I hear it, but I can't stop listening. I want to use it at my wedding too.

Melissa Ferrick – Little Love Lyrics 19 years ago
Gut wrenching - after the girl I moved across the country for told me she didn't want to be with me...this was my song for a long long time.
"but my stomach hurts when I hear your name"
Oh yeah, I know how that goes. I think that Melissa Ferrick and I share a brain sometimes.

Ani DiFranco – Tiptoe Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't believe that this song has anything to do with rape. It's a pro-choice song that's for sure, but I would also venture to guess it is about her own personal experence with abortion. "and i've an appointment on tuesday to shed uninvited blood and tissue" I would guess that this poem is very much related to Lost Woman Song...which also seems to recount a personal experence. And from my personal experence i can tell you that you can look across the Hudson from the West Side Highway in NYC and see the skyline of New Jersey. I always think of this poem when I'm there.

Ani DiFranco – Both Hands Lyrics 19 years ago
I have a bootleg that includes Ani explaining this song. It's about her relationship after she moved from Buffalo to NYC. They were struggling to maintain the relationship, but they breakupanyway. "and in each other's shadows we grew less and less tall and eventually our theories couldn't explain it all and i'm recording our history now on the bedroom wall and when we leave the landlord will come and paint over it all" is literally the breakup verse (or so she says on my CD) I sort of feel that the whole painting over the history is kind of like the whole concept of the home bearing the history of it's inhabitants and once they are gone it's meaningless to the next renters. She also goes on to talk about the apartment being a converted gay bar in the Village. Which she also talks about on Living in Clip I believe.

Melissa Ferrick – Drive Lyrics 19 years ago
She plays this song at EVERY show (or at least the 4 times I've seen her) and always mixes it up a little bit...it is a song about fucking, not about love...she always explains that. It is the hottest song ever. And what are you talking about Semicharmed? She's the one giving it, there are certainly no men involved :)
Everyone should see her; she is one of the best live performers ever.

Melissa Ferrick – Nebraska Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, one correction: "you're body just don't work for me no more" is what I thought she was saying...and I also distinctly remember hearing her say "boy" in there somewhere which has kind of confused me...anyone know anything about that?

Bright Eyes – The Calendar Hung Itself . . . Lyrics 19 years ago
This song breaks my heart...
*Well, I drug your ghost across the country and we plotted out my death. In every city, memories would whisper, "Here is where you rest." I was determined in Chicago but I dug my teeth into my knees*
I can't even begin to tell you how this kills me...he is trying to leave her behind him...I don't know...maybe it's the suicidal ex in Chicago; but this song destorys me.
