The White Stripes – Hello Operator Lyrics 21 years ago
"I'm pretty sure their isn't a RIGHT version of that rhyme... "

uhh, you guys do realize that childrens' schoolyard rhymes aren't exactly standardized, and that they naturally differ from region to region?

The White Stripes – Little Room Lyrics 21 years ago
This song definitely has analogies to fame, but to me it more symbolizes the general ethereality of the creative process. While in the "little room" your creativity thrives on making something good out of next-to-nothing, you still can't help but wonder what you could accomplish if you had more; but when you finally have access to more, you can get overwhelmed by the options available to you. Sometimes your only recourse to get back to that state of creativity to is to strip back down to the bare essentials.

VAST – Turquoise Lyrics 21 years ago
is it such a bother to spellcheck before you post? i mean, really: "forrest"? it just makes you look sort of foolish.

also: "hold your hand" (as opposed to "hold you hand")

VAST – Three Doors Lyrics 21 years ago
The lyrics to the bridge near the end of the song, as found on the band site (realvast.com), are actually "I'll give you the strength but I cannot give you the keys."

However, when i'm listening to the song, i hear "I'll give you strength but I cannot give you the key."

I feel like those mean slightly different things... plural keys might open all three doors, right? But just one key, that would be the one that leads to "you". (Or to him.)

*sigh*... I love this song.

They Might Be Giants – Pet Name Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree! This isn't my favorite of their huge catalog, but I'll attest to the fact that it's terribly underrated. I've never really scrutinized the lyrics, because I'm always too busy enjoying the XTC + Steely Dan feel of the music. But here goes:

The lyrics seem to describe a relationship that never went anywhere. First off, the speaker is a stranger in this other person's world (henceforth referred to as "she"), evidenced in the "not to say I was invited" part and hinted at in all the mentions of the other person's daily life. (If this song weren't about a pet name that she had for him, i'd be tempted to say that the speaker is actually stalking her.) The whole song gives the impression of a total lack of intimacy between the two.

"You said love was just a lie / but I could tell that you were lying" suggests that the object of the speaker's affections was trying to make an excuse for why she doesn't feel so strongly about the speaker. And of course she forgot his one pet name... either she wasn't all that interested in him to begin with, or she lost interest at some point and, since "that sentimental stuff doesn't suit [her]", she couldn't bring herself to tell him so.

There are so many references to time in this song that I get the sense that the relationship was more a way of killing time than anything else. This is supported by the references to really pointless pastimes like "hangman, cat's cradle, origami".

They Might Be Giants – I Should Be Allowed To Think Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is definitely rooted in the anthems of teen angst (as snozzberry commented), but given that this is TMBG and not your local hardcore band, when it comes to "I should be allowed to think" it rings rather ironical. Here's the speaker thinking of all these things he could do, and then he says "I am not allowed to think."

The lyrics of this song remind me of when I had conversations with my mother at the age of 14 or so. I'd say something starting with, "Why can't I just..." and my mom, sick of my excuses for why the world wouldn't "let" me do something, would reply, "Okay, you go ahead and do that."

So for me, the sense of this song is that the speaker is grousing about his own ineffectuality, and shifting the blame from himself to the rest of the world for not "allowing" him to think up "original thought[s]". The Ginsberg reference strikes me as the speaker's way of validating himself by calling upon the words of a respected but rebellious thinker.
