Los Campesinos! – Frontwards Lyrics

I think I like this one better than the original by Pavement (though Pavement's live version is probably still the best). I love the way the vocalists play off each other. |

Better Than Ezra – In The Blood Lyrics

I never realized it before, but I heard this song today and I think he's worried the girl might have a disease. In particular, the first two lines of the last verse and the title of the song lead me to this conclusion. He wants to be with the girl so he wants to know whether she's infected with anything, but he doesn't want to offend her and so he tries to explain "the reason that I'm asking". |

Just heard this one on Pandora. It's off the Phantom Limb single. Awesome song, proving once again that it's virtually impossible to make a bad song that has hand claps. |

The Hold Steady – First Night Lyrics

It's "words alone". The first time I listened to this song, when it got to the "don't bother" part, that was probably the closest to a musical catharsis I've ever gotten. I think it's about the end of the idealism of youth. At first, everything is new and exciting and the future looks so bright, but then you get swept up in everything and then later you look back and feel like you missed your chance. You just can't get as high as you used to. |

To me this song evokes memories of the Columbia. They're about to land, and everyone is excited, and all of a sudden: "The crew compartment's breaking up." Makes me tear up a little every time. I also love the second vocal part at the end: "This is all I wanted to bring home." |

Angie Aparo – Memphis City Rain Lyrics

The first verse is about Jesus, the second one is about Martin Luther King, and how they both preached peace love and understanding and were both killed by those who would destroy the message. The Memphis city rain refers to where MLK was shot. Great song... |

Switchfoot – Gone Lyrics

On U2's "Rattle and Hum", Bono says, "The God I believe in is not short of cash." The lead singer of Switchfoot is a huge U2 fan and when he met Bono he gave him 40 bucks he owed him from sneaking in to a U2 concert a few years back, and Bono gave it right back to him. I'm not sure where the "life is still worth living" part comes from, other than that it's true. |

Wow, can't believe I'm the first one to comment on this song. My second favorite on "Horses" after "One Headlight". This song is amazing. I think it's about a succession of failed relationships, and how you've "just got to keep movin' on". You want people to help you through it, but "you're only sad and lonely and no one is impressed" and really you have to help yourself before others can help you. |

The Wallflowers – Hand Me Down Lyrics

I believe it's actually "this revolution's doomed" but yeah, the set of lyrics posted by DJacques are more accurate. Definitely a song about his father. I saw them perform this at Nashville River Stages in 2001, the night before Bob Dylan was performing at the same place. It was pretty amusing, and awesome live. |

The Wallflowers – Letters From The Wasteland Lyrics

"Two to tango, just one to let go..." Jakob Dylan is an amazing songwriter. I think the line right before the chorus sums it up nicely: "With incarcerated lovesick fools I wait for you to cut me loose." It's all about a relationship he used to have but the girl ended it but he can't quite get over it, so he's still "slow dancing to this romance on my own." A very relatable song. |

"I must be a veteran of 'oh I like your poetry but I hate your poems.'" Somehow that really hits home for me... I think it's all about feeling like you're getting older and you haven't accomplished what you wanted... feeling like another face in the crowd, hence the title "Obscurity Knocks" |

Love conquers all. This song is amazing, and knowing the story behind it I went to Berlin and was singing it the whole time I was walking the line of the former wall. The thoughts it invoked sent chills up my spine. |

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Crowing Lyrics

The line in this song that hits me most is "The more the air in your throat lingers when you call him your friend". I always pictured the "him" in the song as the best friend who's in love with her and has always been there for her thru all her bad relationships. And then when she finally realizes it, he's moved on. Great song. More people need to realize how awesome this album is. |

Toad the Wet Sprocket – All I Want Lyrics

I always thought the line in the bridge was, "It won't matter now / whatever happens will be". Either way, to me this song was always about how he's searching for true love and he feels like he doesn't have it with the girl he's with, but he still can't break away from her. One of the best songs for me to sing along to on the road. |

Stone Temple Pilots – Big Bang Baby Lyrics

I think it's about radio and consumerism and how it's contributing to the death of rock and roll. There are lyrics about selling out ("sell your soul and sign an autograph") and how "nothing's for free" and references to "spinning" records on a "station" and so on. The recycling of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" chorus ("crash crash crash" vs. "gas gas gas") to me is an ironic statement about how originality is becoming impossible. |

Guster – Getting Even Lyrics

I always thought this song was pretty sarcastic myself. When he sings the lyric about not being happy where you are, I feel like he feels a certain amount of contempt for that sentiment. To me the song makes me feel for people who live only for that feeling that they will be vindicated in the end. |

Seven Mary Three – Lucky Lyrics
|
The premise of the song's chorus is taken from the play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett. It features a character named Lucky who never speaks through the entire play except once. He uses the phrase "divine apathy" in his speech. Other than that, his tongue is tied because his master won't let him speak. I also think I heard somewhere that Jason Ross had a friend who referred to himself as mean Mr. Mustard and that's where the verses come from.
Also, don't forget the bridge:
"I'm the wave that crashes
From a sea that turns itself
Inside out every chance I get to
See what it's like in Hell"
To me this song has always meant that if you hold everything inside, you create your own personal hell. The chorus is possibly the most powerful lyrics ever, especially the way they're sung. Anyway, long story short (too late) this is an amazing song. |

R.E.M. – Drive Lyrics

To me this song is about all that was going on in the US around the time it was written and how no one in the younger generation seemed to care. The Ollie thing would make sense then, as well as "bushwhacked" which I'm pretty sure refers to the 92 election. |

Live – Sparkle Lyrics

I'm amazed no one has commented on this song. One of my favorites by Live, I think it's written from the perspective of a man on his wedding day who knows that he's found love and he doesn't need parted seas or messiahs for happiness, all he needs is "someone", who is both the giver and, on that day, the gift. Amazing lyrics, incredible song. |

Stone Temple Pilots – Plush Lyrics

Weiland does say it's about a lost obsessive relationship, but I think it expands to a commentary on women in society. The "dogs" are sex-hungry men who see women as nothing more than objects, like pretty plush dolls. That's my guess as to where the title comes from too. Great song. |
