Radiohead – Karma Police Lyrics 17 years ago
In response to many of the "It's about blah blah blah that happened whilst touring, throwing pineapples, etc" comments -

I'm pretty certain that the majority of the 'statements' by the band members in interviews are glib, self-deprecating slices of irony, designed to play down the intelligence of their lyrics and the sheer genius of their music.

Forget the meaning behind the lyrics though. Go and see the 'Head live a few times and you'll realise that the real meaning behind all of their work is to get thousands of people bouncing up and down and singing along to some of the best music ever written.

Best. Band. Ever..... probably.

2:25 - 'Soon, oh' -Jangly guitars
'I try to sing aloud but the music's all wrong'

Dude, at 2:25 the song becomes so RIDICULOUSLY IMPOSSIBLY GOOD that you want to believe that Radiohead have made a pact with the devil himself to acquire their talent.

And yes, 1984 and Brave New World should be on EVERYONE's boolshelves.

It isn't a clone. After some revision of my previous theories, I now feel that Kid A 'the album' Is an autobiography of Thom's life to date.

Kid A IS Thom. When you see that, it all becomes clear.

At this point in the album, our Thom is a toddler. Nuff said, draw your own conclusions, I'm not here to tell you what lies at the end of the road, I'm here to show you where it begins.

Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics 21 years ago
To expand upon this, the album Kid A is all about the life of one person.

It's best to listen to the tracks consecutively to get the idea behind it all. We see a child born, grow up, turn into a man, experience all that goes with that, grow old and then, with the finale of 'exit music', see him shuffle off this mortal coil.

You guys need to look at the big picture before scrutinising the details.

I could spend a day typing up a full commentary to the album, but you just need to listen to it. The various stages, portrayed musically and lyrically, speak for themselves.

How can so many people be so wrong about one song?

This song is about the conception of a sentient being. I.E. Kid A.

The phrase Everything in it's right place is common parlance for 'two eyes, two legs, four fingers and a thumb on each hand, etc.' In other words 'Kid A' has been brought into the world with no defects/mutations/disabilities.

The sucking a lemon, as already pointed out on this board, is a phrase referring to 'looking miserable'.

What is the first thing newborn babies do?

Why, cry of course! Face like he's sucking a lemon covered then.

There are two colours in my head.

I.E. black and white. As a newborn, Kid A is an innocent. He has no 'grey' concepts or befuddled morals. He is a blank slate without malice, and only the ability to distinguish between things that make him happy 'white' or make him unhappy 'black'.

The part which is most disturbing is the line 'What is that you tried to say.'

This implies that 'Kid A' has developed the first stage of sentience, the ability to understand speech. He is about to have all manner of dubious thoughts and concepts thrust into his open mind, corrupting the innocence therein, and robbing him of his monotonal morality.

Fare thee well Kid A.

God bless you, and all who sail in you.

Actually, I think it's:

Kill me Sirrah
Kill me again with love

Sirrah is also a Shakespearean term of address.

Radiohead – No Surprises Lyrics 21 years ago
There are a number of possible meanings for this song, all depending on your perspective.

My current favourite theory is that the song is about a man on the brink, under pressure, high-stress job, etc, who is close to nervous breakdown.

His mind is turmoil, until he finally tips over the edge, into madness.

'This is my final fit' could refer to a strait-jacket.

'Such a pretty house.......garden' may well be the response of a mind so overloaded it's reverted to a childlike state in order to defend itself.

Alternatively, it's a suicide note, but I doubt it somehow. That's too simple for old TW.

Radiohead – Karma Police Lyrics 21 years ago
Well, a lot of crazed confusion here. Yes, a lot of Radiohead lyrics and phrases are inspired by Orwell's 1984. But that doesn't tell the whole story here.

The concept of 'karma police' implies that the governing of karmic justice is in some way enforced, rather than a vague concept of retribution.

The theme of the song isn't anger, it's the age old 'what comes around, goes around'.

The lyric 'we're still on the payroll', for me, seems to imply the actual target of the karmic come-uppance is the singer himself. Possibly relating to the idea that he's giving of himself as much as he can in order to balance out the millions upon millions of pounds he's solicited from an unsuspecting public, incapable of defending themselves from his seeming god-given musicak abilities.

Or maybe that's stretching the analogy to far.

Also, the idea of 'I've given all I can' being a suggestion of attempting to 'bribe' the karma police appeals to me.

Yet again we have an Orwellian reference, as well as the parallel being drawn to the recent American scandal.

You have to remember that these guys are artists, and artists love nothing more than sticking one on the politicians.

More importantly, I saw them play this live a few weeks ago. If you think it rocks on your cd/mp3 player, wait til you hear em 'doing it'.

F**king unbelievable.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's my favourite OK Computer song. That title is held by either PA or Karma police. But I love the lead guitar in this, I think the music was just a platform for them to let loose on an album which was very tightly contained and controlled. The lyrics are incidental.

All missing the point, totally.

The emphasis of this song is on the emotional deadness that comes from striving towards economical and mechanical perfection.

Also, think 1984.

Hail to the Relocater
