Counting Crows – Goodnight Elisabeth Lyrics

I agree that there's definitely a link between this song and "Rain King"... basically because he ends both of the live versions of Rain King that are on Across a Wire with the words "and I say goodnight Elisabeth... and I am the rain king." So there's some sort of link there. I always had a different interpretation of the song though. I think Elisabeth is a "wanderer," she probably travels a lot and sleeps around. Maybe she and the narrator have met a few times, and he really falls hard for her... but after the last time he knows that that's the end of it. The only time they would see each other again is if they meet by chance, and he knows that is highly unlikely. So instead he'll wait for her, and think of her even when he's with another woman, because the mark he left on her was that strong. The beginning, where he says he hopes that she's okay, is because he has no idea where she is or what she's doing. He's saying goodnight to her so she knows that he is still out there somewhere... I don't know. Just my interpretation :)

i think she just got out of an abusive relationship, and still cares about the guy. but the singer in the song wants her to be with *him* instead of the abusive guy, and he's trying to convince her that the guy was not right for her. but at the same time he doesn't want to pressure her... just let her know that he's there for her and will be there for her as soon as she's able to realize her mistake.

This is such a good song, I can't believe no one has commented on it yet. :P It's a love song, plain and simple, but I love the sound of it... it's so different from her other songs. And when it gets faster and louder at the end... it's just a great song.

yeah, i always thought this was a song was about someone who committed suicide or died of an overdose or something along those lines. "that cold day when you lost control, shame you left my life so soon you should have told me..." i think he is trying to deal with the pain of this person being gone, realizing that maybe he didn't treat them the best he possibly could... but at the same time he's angry. he tried, he would have been there for them, but they just turned away... left him far behind... and now he's trying to deal with the pain and the anger at the same time. great song. i love the emotion in his voice. it rarely fails to bring me to tears.

i agree with you, countmycrows, the live versions are incredible. my favorite song of all time is the version from the other disc of across a wire. i love how he works lines from "have you seen me lately" into it, and when he says (with more passion each time) "can't you see me? can't you see me? can't you see me? no." i fall apart every time i hear it.

this song is just amazing... i love the line "people talk about my image like i come in two dimensions, like lipstick is a sign of my declining mind." and the first stanza really sets the scene, of something typical and generic. the trumpets give it a fun almost mocking tone and i love that... it's just a great song :)

i kind of agree with punkstarr. the guy i'm with right now has serious problems with depression. i see how upset he is and i just want to "save him", to make him feel better. but when he gets upset he feels like he's being a burden to me, and he pulls away -- which actually ends up hurting me more. i want him to stop shutting me out, to let me into his world and help him. that's what this song reminds me of. (probably not what michelle branch was thinking, i think littlecrys was right on with that, but this is what the song means to me.)
