I never thought of it like this when I listened to it, but looking at the lyrics it sounds like a break-up song. It mentions losing the love, and looking for someone. It sounds like he lost the wall of love that was sheltering him from the bad in the world, and now is questioning it.

I always thought it was the other way around. I thought the first part was about a friend of his. The singer is the one who betrayed his friend by getting with his girlfriend. The hollow feeling is his guilt. Although the singer's whole world is changed by what he did, the sun still comes up and the world goes on.
