The river boat queen is the Delta Queen, a riverboat on the Mississippi based out of New Orleans. Proud Mary is a reference to marijuana, which burns when smoked. Rollin on the river is a double entendre for rolling Proud Mary, or marijuana. You don't have to buy it if you're broke, because the river people are happy to share. Pumping pain is using other drugs. |
