Kind of Like Spitting – Hands Lyrics
|
I love so many KOLS songs, but I have to say, I find myself going back to this one so often. It just pops into my head at times and then I absolutely have to listen to it; a wonderful song you can listen to in almost any kind of mood. There are equal parts contentment and sadness to it so you can take from it what you will at any given time. I too am so glad Kind of Like Spitting recorded this before they broke up. Thank you, KOLS! |

Defiance, Ohio – Grandma Song Lyrics
|
No one else gets 9/11 vibes from this song? Cities falling in stacks, men jumping from buildings, dust overwhelming... I can see the Great Depression connection, too, but that one verse really resonates with the horrific imagery of 9/11 we all saw in the papers and on TV. No political message here, just human grieving. |

Paul Baribeau – Black Strat Lyrics

This song has been stuck in my head all day. The lyrics are short and simple but the feeling behind them is so pure and strong. If you've never had one of those holy moments that make you say, "Holy shit," you've got to start doing something different with your life. The "Holy shit" line cracks me up every time I hear this; coming out of the long, drawn-out, beautifully sung "so holy," the way he talk-sings, "I said 'Holy shit' is funny and just somehow perfect at the same time. |

Blind Guardian – Trial by Fire (Satan cover) Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
has anyone actually heard of the band Satan? this "cover" is the only place i've ever come across the name; i like this song, so i looked them up, but i've never been able to find anything on them on the web. you'd think it'd be a more popular metal band name. |

Explosions in the Sky – Remember Me as a Time of Day Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
i've been feeling incredibly nostalgic lately--not just missing things from my past but feeling almost as if i were back there, like if i went outside i'd be in high school again. granted, it's spring and the weather's beautiful; maybe that has something to do with it. but i'm not convinced it wasn't listening to this song for the first time a couple days ago that did it. even just the title is so incredibly evocative and full of nostalgia... powerful stuff. |

The Microphones – Great Ghosts Lyrics
|
this song is one of my favorite microphones songs, and i find the lyrics incredibly relatable and so beautiful. i don't often use the word "beautiful" to describe songs (i usually lean more towards "great") but the microphones make some absolutely beautiful stuff. the feeling of being forever trapped in longing for all the women and everything else you've lost in the past is just conveyed so perfectly and eloquently here. wow. wow. wow. |

Defiance, Ohio – Letter Home Lyrics

yeah, they are political, but their lyrics are clever in this song. they're genuine and heartfelt, unlike some of the latter-day bands that just jump on the political song bandwagon. |

John Lennon – Oh Yoko! Lyrics
|
i love this song.
his voice sounds so vulnerable and wounded when he sings "on" after the slow "my love...will...turn...you..." build-up. somehow this song seems happy on the surface and makes you want to shake your head around, but it still makes me incredibly sad--it's a tear-jerker. maybe it's because while listening to it, you think of the story between the two and how lennon's life ended. it also doesn't help that i first heard it on a mix cd an old girlfriend made for me, and it makes me miss her a bit. and that my uncle used to refer to us as "john and yoko" all the time. this song's a heartbreaker. |

The New Amsterdams – Watch the World Cave In Lyrics
| 16 years ago

the new amsterdams generally have great lyrics, but the words in this song are incredible even by those standards (particularly the second verse..."the rich got the camel through the eye of the needle / the deed in itself was inherently evil" is just brilliantly sad). |

Hefner – When The Angels Play Their Drum Machines Lyrics

i also love that line, but kind of see it in a different way. i think he's talking to someone who's dumped him before, but he still wants to get back together with her, even though he knows she's probably going to end up dumping him again in the end anyway. he needs her that much. |

The Thermals – No Culture Icons Lyrics
|
i love the ending, where it seemingly just completely switches up to a love song, where in the midst of all this ranting about the art scene he wanders back to her, just breaks down and says "i can't fucking stop/thinking about you." great song overall. the thermals are growing on me. |

my bad...i searched a little more and found that "sak vide pa kanpe" is a creole proverb that means "an empty sack cannot stand up." |

Arcade Fire – Intervention Lyrics
|
when they performed this on snl, the singer had "sak vide pa kanpe" written on his guitar in duct tape. i looked it up, found it was haitian, and translated it as "sack empty(v.) not rebuild"...you get the point. at the end of the song he smashed the guitar. a little stupid and nihilistic. kind of brings to mind the cake song "rock 'n' roll lifestyle". |

Tom Waits – Take Me Home Lyrics

Soul Asylum – String of Pearls Lyrics

Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Lyrics
| 17 years ago

when i first heard this song i thought of it as a straight-up love song, but after a while the lines about possible loss like "What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me" started hitting me really hard and it came on in the car the other day when i was with my girlfriend and i couldn't help crying because of all the emotions the song brought out at the time. i'm a sap. |

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Hung Over As the Queen in Maida Vale Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
where it sounds like he says, "oarman summoned," he actually says Urim and Thummim, which was this old hebrew device for drawing lots and supposedly learning their god's will through them. basically like tarot cards.
by the way i think (pure conjecture) they take these kinds of clips (the religious crazies kind) from old radio/televangelists; a silver mount zion uses one like this in "broken chords can sing a little." |

The Ataris – The Radio Still Sucks Lyrics

their music is still the same?? the song that's on the radio now is a goddamn don henley cover that sounds very un-ataris and very don henley. i used to love the ataris but when they said "will you still love me when i sell out?", i said no. |

Kind of Like Spitting – Dodge Dart Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
this song is really really hard to understand at times, which is probably why the lyrics are nowhere to be found on the internet. towards the end, where it says "the friend i've lost", it also sounds to me like he could be saying "afraid i've lost", and where it says "my poison hangs on you", my friend thinks it sounds like "my life depends on you", which makes a little more sense, but i think it sounds more like the other way. but he helped out a lot on the other parts from 1:22 on. he's a good guy. |

Arthur – Friday April 6th Lyrics

some of these lyrics are pretty sketchy. i did the best i could, but at times i just couldn't understand what he was saying. see where it says "regrets are"..., and the line after was "what you said rehearsed", because "was you to do face" makes no sense, but that was my best guess on what he said. please post corrections if you've got the correct lyrics. |
