Yacht – I Believe in You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I wasn't too hot on this album until I heard this song, it totally changed EVERYTHING. anyway, the first question mark is "prehensile" |
Tullycraft – Glitter & Twang Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I can't help but love the countodwn in this song, I always sing along in the car. Anybody else catch how self-referential #8 is? |
They Might Be Giants – The End Of The Tour Lyrics | 18 years ago |
hmph, well... since this didn't get posted before for some reason, I recently discovered that WLSD is a religious radio station. This sort of fuels an interperation of the song which suggests that "the tour" is just life, and seeing someone at the end of the tour means meeting them on the other side. I don't think that either of the Johns would write a song about a car accident that they'd caused... it just doesn't seem to fit who they are - it seems like it's more a pretty striking metaphor for death. |
Oh No! Oh My! – I Have No Sister Lyrics | 18 years ago |
as much as I love my bike, this song does make me want to ride it into the sea. it's like the pied piper, only his pipe calls to cyclists rather than rats... |
New Buffalo – I've Got You and You've Got Me (Song of Contentment) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
as wonderful as this song is, it's definitely NOT the kind of thing you want to hear on one of those long lonely nights with the rain pouring down outside... |
The Weakerthans – Our Retired Explorer (Dines with Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
alright, I know it's very postmodernist, but how can the narrator BE shackleton, given the line "I must say that in the right light you look like shackleton"? that aside, this is definitely one of my favorite songs, and I love the conclusion: Antarctica is more pressing than postmodernism. |
The Boy Least Likely To – Be Gentle With Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I would like this song SO much more IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER WHERE I HEARD IT FIRST. |
The Magnetic Fields – I Wish I Had an Evil Twin Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I wish I had more songs about evil twins so I could make a mix about them, is that the same thing? |
Sufjan Stevens – To Be Alone with You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think the biggest problem with christian music in general is that it feels like it's just people patting themselves on the back saying "good job! we're christian so we'll write songs about jesus" this seems different, however. as the bible passages that have been cited have proved, there's a strong christian connection (but given how much of the bible there is, it seems possible to give almost any line, especially ones so vague, a christian slant). yet there's something about the christian explanation of the song that bothers me: the third and fourth lines. I dunno, they seem to suggest to me that he's somehow lost his connection. that he'd swim across lake michigan to be alone with the big J again. like it's a trial of faith rather than a pure devotional song. and to wrap this ramble up with my initial thought, that feeling is so disparate from, to use a example from the bottom of the barrel, apologetix's abomination "come out and pray". It doesn't scream we're better than you, it simply invites you to sit next to it a while and see what happens. |
Architecture in Helsinki – Fumble Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I was in love with this song before I read the lyrics, and that line about fumbling around in the dark with a flashlight reminds me of all those times I've spent reading under the covers as a child. and thinking that I might share that someday. |
Architecture in Helsinki – Do the Whirlwind Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"The Whirlwind sounds like it should be a dance. I wonder how it goes..." like all of the best dances, I do declare that it should be made up on the spot. |
They Might Be Giants – No One Knows My Plan Lyrics | 19 years ago |
so, I have to ask, why the burning autumn leaves? |
Eels – Saturday Morning Lyrics | 20 years ago |
having run a radio show on saturday mornings on a sleepy campus in the depths of maine, this song was a perfect morning kick to get into the groove of radio, and basically summs up that feeling of bored restlessness that sneaks into the sole every now and again. who's gunna play with me? |
The Weakerthans – Plea from a Cat Named Virtute Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I think we all really need a cat named virtue, who will bend over backwards to try to get us out of our depressive ruts. sometimes it worries me though, what exactly does it mean to be strong to a cat? |
They Might Be Giants – She's An Angel Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I will admit, this is the song that got me into tmbg, by way of the B. Lee Band, but I really do think they might be giants do the song better. The slow beat and lower energy reflect the questioning and doubting in the song. should you throw your body off a building? this isn't the kind of question you deal with in a hurry and then move on. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I've heard it said that Jeff Magnum has written the entire album basically about a jewish family on the eve of world war two that exists in his head... whatever his inspiration is, my life has changed for the better since he entered into my life. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – My Dreamgirl Don't Exist Lyrics | 21 years ago |
besides being just about my favorite neutral milk hotel song, the live version of this song that I have (from elephant6.com) talks about how it's a companion to another song. Unless I miss my guess, that other song is "ghost" as they both share the line "she knows she'll never be afraid" and because of the fact that ghost is talking about... well, a ghost. anybody have any other ideas? |
They Might Be Giants – I Should Be Allowed To Think Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I don't think it was inspired by ginsberg, but the quote at the beginning is ripped out of howl (says so in the liner notes). but... I dunno, it just doesn't seem that much like ginsberg to me... it's more bitterly ironic. I mean, "I saw the worst bands of my generation applied to whiteboard" seems to be a much more modern attack on the music industry. plus, like all of tmbg's stuff, it's more innocent than ginsberg... at least on the outside. |
They Might Be Giants – Whistling In The Dark Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I was informed by a member of an older generation that "whistling in the dark" means roughly not knowing what you're doing. I don't know if anybody else is aware of this, but it came as an interesting bit of news to me. |
They Might Be Giants – Another First Kiss Lyrics | 21 years ago |
"the morning alarm rings I'm asleep but she's talking to me she's walking 'round wearing all of my clothes but we decided long ago we'd build a time machine and go how bout another first kiss kiss kiss yeah I want another first kiss [later] the clock bends she's waiting I could tell you we belong together I could tell you you belong with me..." that's the original version of the song... I recall it being off of severe tire damage and being live... the increased tempo and general upbeat feel to the song, along with its delicious nerdiness make it appeal to me a lot more than the version that appeared on mink car. |
They Might Be Giants – They Might Be Giants Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I more or less directly quote the following from the movie where they got their name from, but "don quixote's problem was that he thought that all windmills were giants. that's insane!" thus... they might be giants. as for dr. spock's back up band... hey, the man's released more musical cds than the beatles. |
