The Hold Steady – Knuckles Lyrics 16 years ago
best song everrr.

I think it's in part about the "war on drugs". . .the havok drugs wreak on people everywhere, and the ineffective (and overly harsh?) ways the government tries to deal with it. I like the like "there are wars going down in the middle west. . .wars going down in the middle western states". I think it implies that the "war" on drugs is more fucked up and destructive in our own country than the other war we're focused on.

but of course, that's just one part in this layered song.

Madeline Adams – Seeing Double Lyrics 16 years ago
one of my favorite madeline songs. . .I think it's about a somewhat naive girl who's in love with someone she doesn't want to be. He has her "tied up" and she starts to see things that aren't there, hence "seeing double." She's at his house but she's not sure what will happen next ("her reaction would prove all that I fear happens behind locked doors").

also, I think the last line is "next to a dollar bill and me" as in, she's so smitten, she's in his pocket.

Dawn Landes – You Alone Lyrics 16 years ago
this is a wonderful song. . .I think it's about two people who are together, but know that things won't last. they just happen to be in the same place for a while, and she knows that eventually he will leave and go on to better things.

The Servant – Cells Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song (and the servant). Their sense of being lost, bored, and living a meaningless life is piercing and keen.

One comment: I always thought it was "I dress myself like a Chagall sketch" after the artist Marc Chagall. They seem to mention artists a bit ("peel me like a piece of fruit in a Caravaggio" from Jack the Ripper). y/n?

Manchester Orchestra – I Can Barely Breathe Lyrics 17 years ago
I do think this song is about our culture, and the ways we destroy ourselves. "When the houses came" could be overdevelopment, consumerist culture. "turning skin into a dirty secret" could be plastic surgery, makeup, etc. I think "everybody has their reasons, that's the reason we're all gonna die" is a comment about looking out for only yourself, and not the greater good.

Manchester Orchestra – Colly Strings Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree IamI. . .I think, at the very least, it's about someone who's cheated on their significant other, but after all is confessed, they feel more in love with him/her than before, and want to make it right. Curious lines: "i lost your presence underneath the bridge" "I fell so fast in Sufat's bedroom" (the cheating?) I'd be interested to hear other people's interpretations.

Twothirtyeight – Songs Will Write the Words Lyrics 21 years ago
to me I think it means that people are always telling him that he doesn't have control over things. . .love is just a chemical. The songs write the words to his songs, he doesn't. But he doesn't agree, he watns to "just forget me" (his body) and be in love/create (get the "one thing you can get me") sincerely, instead of just believing it's a bodily function.

Twothirtyeight – The Bastard Son And The Spoiled One Lyrics 21 years ago
This song (imo) is saying that he thought he was a Christian and living his life that way (the grateful bastard son eventually came back and begged for forgiveness), but in reality he's "played" the Christian all his life and now he realizes he hasn't lived life the way he should or lead others to Christ ("If you raise them up. . ."), so he's the rich and spoiled son.

Twothirtyeight – The Hands of Men Lyrics 21 years ago
I've always thought this song talked about our current 'obsession' with chemicals to solve problems. People are unhappy ("sick") and unfulfilled in their lives, and doctors and nurses keep pumping them full of chemicals instead of really trying to solve the problem.

Twothirtyeight – Ears And Fingers Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song is about people who are always talking and never listening. . .they "point" their fingers in other people's faces and for accenuation, but when someone talks back they stick their fingers in their ears and don't listen. Awesome point about having a good conversation ^_~
