Lynyrd Skynyrd – That Smell Lyrics 21 years ago
Spot on SouthernMetalHead, the song is about Gary Rossington.

Prince Charming - Gary was always popular with the ladies, so history goes!

I'm not sure about the Artimus and Collins thing, if so, I never heard it before.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama Lyrics 21 years ago
Skynyrd were not from Louisiana (??), they were formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1965.

Sweet Home Alabama is quite political -

'In Birmingham they love the governer - Boo boo boo,
Now we all did what we could do,
Watergate does not bother me,
Does you conscience bother you?'

- This is an ode to the band's election choice. See, while the majority of the country wanted Nixon, they wanted Governor George Wallace of Montgomery, Alabama (Hence, Montgomery's got the answer). When Watergate happened, Skynyrd were then asking the majority 'Does you conscience bother you?'.

The 'Boo Boo Boo' bit was the majority's views on Wallace, he was known as a bit of a racist.

The Neil Young thing was both a joke and a poke at Young. Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer) didn't think it right what Young said about people from Alabama but Neil saw the funny side and nothing was ever made from it.

Just a bit of background for ya -

The start of Skynyrd was when Ronnie Van Zant was playing baseball for his team, the Green Pigs when he hit a foul ball. The ball knocked a fella, called Bob Burns, who was watching with a boy called Gary Rossington, out. Ronnie ran over to see if Bob was OK, then it all came about that Gary played guitar, Ronnie sang and Bob played drums, so they all decided to get together for a bit of a music session - that was the start of it.

The 3 of them decided that they sounded good together and wanted to make a good go of this but they needed a proper amp !! (up to know they had jut been using the built in one on Gary's guitar). They knew this scrawny kid by the name of Allen Collins who had an amp so Ronnie, Gary and Bob all went out looking for him. They spotted him and, with Ronnie having the reputation he did, Allen started running away. They chased him until, eventually Allen climbed up a tree. They managed to talk him down by telling them why they was chasing him, Gary and Allen plugged both their guitars into Allen's small amp, and the rest, as they say is history !! (Well, that's just about the start of it anyway, I could go on and on and on, but I wont for now !!).

One more thing for anyone curious about the name, Leonard Skinner was their High School Gym teacher who had the boys dismissed for having long hair, the band were playing a gig, in a Jacksonville bar somewhere, and Ronnie announced 'Who thinks we should change our name to Leonard Skinner?' The response was so overwhelming that they did. (Leonard Skinner was well known!). Before that they were the one percent band - as Ronnie always said that only one percent of musicians ever make it. They changed the vowels to y's to protect Skinner, although I'm not sure about the 'd' on the end.
