Kings of Leon – Milk Lyrics | 19 years ago |
problems with drinking milk = problems with parental authority (very typical teenager) just think about what milk signifies.. it's a direct connection to your mother and you're maternal dependence as a child. |
Bright Eyes – Spring Cleaning Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Is the same Amy he refers to in "Amy In The White Coat"? Chilling, anyhow. |
Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Lyrics | 20 years ago |
"it's a chemical embrace that kicks you in the head to a pure synthetic sympathy that infuriates you totally" I think the chemical embrace he is referring to is non-circumstantial depression caused by an inbalance of chemicals in the brain. You can't stop your own body from metaphorically 'kicking you in the head' (aka: making you depressed). Then though, he is shifted to a 'pure synthetic sympathy.' I think perhaps this refers to anti-depressant drugs. They are man-made (synthetic) cures that often cause a person to feel little like themselves. They really change a person, thus 'infuriating them totally.' I agree with lilybart that this song deals with Smith's time in a mental facility, especially because of the line 'they came to fix you.' All in all, quite brilliant lyrics in this one. |
Cursive – The Recluse Lyrics | 20 years ago |
morning after a one night stand. period. best cursive song though - definately not usually a huge fan of the band, but this one got me good. |
The Postal Service – Brand New Colony Lyrics | 20 years ago |
i for some reason assumed the line "drowning in an open tab" meant that she was drinking too much... |
The Who – Baba O'Riley Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I think perhaps this song is about Woodstock. Pete Towshend was known for his cynical outlook on the festival (culminating in his violent whacking of Abbie Hoffman off stage with his guitar during Hoffman's attempt to tell the crowd about a man arrested for marijuana charges that seemed ridiculous and unfair). I think teenage wasteland describes Woodstock really well - I did a ton of research on it hoping to prove its historical significance and was completely dismayed to find out the truth. Anyways, that was irrelevant - but I do think this about the festival. |
Phish – Down With Disease Lyrics | 20 years ago |
As www.phish.com posted an official memo from Trey announcing the end of Phish, this song finally makes sense. We should have seen it coming. Trey claimed he had been feeling the band was burning out and didn't want to push it, but rather accept it and move on before they became a "nostalgia act." These thoughts are probably the demons he refers to that "dance in his head" In this song, he acknowledges that fan base that Phish has accumulated ("a thousand barefoot children outside dancing on my lawn"), but then also shows desire to leave the band ("waiting for the time I can finally say that this has all been wonderful but now I'm on my way.") The lyrics then go on to express his anxiety that he can not escape the band, the fans "step on his rhythm" and "steal all his lines." He just wants "go on his way..." RIP Phish, I will love you forever. |
John Vanderslice – They Won't Let Me Run Lyrics | 20 years ago |
john vanderslice is absolutely psychotic and i love it. he has all these alternate personalities and lives in his songs. "one day I fell in love and of course we fucked around the morning she threw up my options were all laid out" ^got girlfriend pregnant? she threw up... morning sickness? that makes the most sense to me at least. |
Spoon – The Way We Get By Lyrics | 20 years ago |
ooooh what a good song. i love the line: WE BELIEVE IN THE SUM OF OURSELVES it's so romantic. |
Bright Eyes – I've Been Eating (For You) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
oh, in lua i agree that he basically admits he has an eating disorder when he says "it takes one to know one and i think you've got it bad." but this song? i'm not sure that's what this one is about. he can make reference in other songs without it having anything to do with this one. it really seems that he is in love with a very promiscuous girl, and his depression faded when she was with him, but now that she's gone, he just wants to die again. great line: "but still i hope you get everything that you care to possess - and unbelievable sex." |
Bright Eyes – I've Been Eating (For You) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
"but still i hope you get everything that you care to possess and unbelievable sex, with him or any one of my friends. but just don't ask about my appetite i didn't lose it tonight it's been gone half my life it's just i, i've been eating for you." it's not about eating disorders, i don't think, but rather just using the idea of "eating" as a euphamism for "staying alive." his love leaves him for another man, maybe even his friends, and he's saying - don't worry about me, i was only living for you anyways, and now that you're gone i've got nothing but, you know, hey don't worry. |
Fountains of Wayne – Stacy's Mom Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Bright Eyes – Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh Lyrics | 20 years ago |
"The phone slips from a loose grip. Words were missed, then some apology like I didn’t want to tell you this It’s just some guys she has been hanging out with oh, I don’t know the past couple of weeks I guess. Thank you and hang up the phone. Let the funeral start." the death of a relationship. bright eyes has made me an emo kid. i love it, though. i love it. |
Ryan Adams – Come Pick Me Up Lyrics | 20 years ago |
great. fucking fucking great. |
Bright Eyes – Saturday as Usual Lyrics | 20 years ago |
"my brother went to college to become a doctor and if he studies hard enough he'll end up just like father who hates his life " ^my fear in life. i used this line to attempt to explain myself to my family and though it was not completely successful, it was not half the failure of previous attempts. it's painfully truthful. love it. |
