Dar Williams – Mortal City Lyrics 19 years ago
I think few songs clasp melancholy as well as this one. It taps into sadness and loss of connection, but yet saves a painful and prickly seat for hope. Even within the cold depths of an inpersonal universe, there still can be moments of connection, but only if you are really still and achingly open your heart to the silence.
I have always found it amazing, with any snow storm or power outage how suddenly there are real people who appear in the city and pause in their life and you meet the person you live next to for the first time and it feels real and connected and so achingly sad, because when the snow is cleared, it all flows back to no one listening.

Dar Williams – Spring Street Lyrics 21 years ago
Dar WIlliams is always very clever with her dual meanings and her seasons-of-relationships metaphors. She intertwines the growing career aspirations (the poetic lure of SoHo) -- the ever-present lure to "sell out" and her need to grow past a relationship that was built on a weak foundation. I think the resolution that "moving on" is just "moving on" regardless of where that movement is ends up being one of her more idealistic and hopeful messages. There is an earnest reaching out to be happy with change, however painful.

K's Choice – Butterflies Instead Lyrics 21 years ago
A girl grows up feeling alone, abandoned and uncomforted by her parents. She seeks her solace in animistic representations of creatures who cannot disappear. As an adult, she has a child, but does not know how to soothe and dwells within her own sorrow. She fears her child's needs (the wet diaper) and recedes into the distance and unfortunately perpetuates the cycle.
