This song is derived from that anger. He drove a million miles to get a Whopper, only to get pissed that some guy cut him off. Axl conveys such emotion, even moreso than "Estranged" and what it lacks in lyrical prowess, it makes up for with Axl's emotional voice. This is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard anytime anywhere. I'm 29 years old and I've heard A LOT of music in my years. This ranks way up there. The amount of talent in this song is astonishing. While I do agree with goclaygo, I don't like songs thare are too deep into fantasy. So while goclaygo is probably right, I like to see this song as a typical story of two lovers stuck in a relationship that is far from happy, fighting back and forth. The killing, heaven, hell, ressurrrection, etc I see are metaphors. I've been through a couple relationships where this song fits perfectly. |

He's not saying "Reflecting off your old CD", he's saying "Reflecting off the OCD" As in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I heard him say it clearly at a show, and it just makes sense anyway given the type of person the song describes. To me this song describes the type of guy who never really had anything going for him. He's not motivated and has no drive. He has a "fortune inside his head" but he lacks the motivation and determination to get things rolling. He never gets a real job, and he lives at home with his mom. All he does is go from day to day feeling like a loser because nobody understands him. Nobody understands that he has vision, and that he's capable of more than he actually does. People label him a loser because they simply don't understand him. He had a good life before, but things have certainly gone south. |

The historical references are probably correct, but I always saw this song as a metophorical one about a loner who doesn't really care about anybody. People are intrigued by this person, and want to change him, but he doesn't want anybody in his life and he's better off alone. This song is obviously about Phil's overcoming of his past. I HIGHLY identify with this song. He's had low self esteem for so long that he has finally broken free from it. "I've been wrong for far too long" This means he's been going about life the wrong way. "I've moved mountains with less" This means he has done things in the past that he can't do now "When I channel my hate to be productive, I don't find it hard to impress" This means when you take all your anger and focus it on something productive, you will have positive results and it won't be hard to impress others with you newfound strengths. Turning anger into production ALWAYS produces RESULTS. "Bones in traction Hands break to hone raw energy Bold and disastrous My ears can't hear what you say to me " This pre-chorus means he has finally realized he can grasp powers and confidence that were never there before. He's "Bold and disastrous". This means his "NEW LEVEL" of confidence and intelligence can't be matched. And the part about the ears not hearing what people say means he won't listen to any discouragements or doubts anyone has about him. "I feel a conquering will deep inside me" This means he knows in his heart that he is capable of doing whatever he wants, and he just needs to find a way to release it. The last part of the song means that he is SO DETERMINED to acheive his goal that nobody can stop him. He will not accept failure as he is emerging from the shell that is his past. |

I think this song is about a type of person who always lives in the past. They can't grow emotionally because they are so attached to the past and is afraid to 'grow up'. "Return to my own vomit like a dog" The "vomit" is a metaphor of the past. "Maybe one day I'll be royalty" As children, we see adults as authority figures. They are at the top of the hierarchy in families. This line suggests that the subject is pondering if he/she will ever grow up. "Carve my initials in a tree I will never leave." Seems like this person is certain they will never leave the past behind and continue to live in it. "Drinking fountains are shorter than they used to be, The swings on the playground don't even fit me anymore." This is a sign that the person is growing physically and biologically, but still the same age mentally. "Held Back Again" They can't seem to break free from the past. "Will I graduate?"
