I've never read the book, and I've always thought of this song about leaving someone behind they love. With the plane... I've always thought of a ship though until I read that comment. Also I agree with Insomniac86! I love the line "He said: I am but one small instrument" I love it alot. It puts a deep feeling into me that I cannot describe. Great song. Though it got quite repetitive and boring, it sounds really neat when you listen to it all the way through and it has the techno thing at the end. |

I will say this now... WOW that was a REALLY immature fight up there and I agree with everything else. Anyways. Maybe LZ was INSPIRED by TLOTR. Maybe that's the word everyone's looking for. I get inspired by books alot to write songs, but my songs aren't about the BOOKS, they have another meaning, they were just INSPIRED by the book. I don't think this song is about TLOTR. And who cares if it is OVER-RATED?! My good lord. It's an opinion. Do you people have to bash eachother senselessly because someone said this or someone said that? Those who think it's over-rated; fine. That's your opinion. Don't PERSIST it on us. And those who think it's not over-rated; fine. That's your opinion. Don't PERSIST it on THEM! I agree. If they're lesbian or faking, who the hell cares? The song still reaches out to other people who are feeling the same thing, and that's all that MATTERS, right? This is a pretty song. But the Russian version of it is so much better. They butchered all the lyrics in it so much it's incredible. Even the title is not the same. In Russia the title is Ya Soshla S Uma, which means I've Lost My Mind in Russian, not, all The Things She Said. Just check out the translation of the Russian lyrics yourself. I also reccomend their Russian music. I have the CD of them. But very cool song, none the less. |

Very beautiful. From what I see: It's about being really in love with this guy, who does not want you. They're too busy dating all the other girls. (Maybe because they're cool? Who knows.) When you obvious see all those other girls are just pretending to like him ( "I won't fake it like all the other girls") when she really loves him. And obvious, as mentioned above, "I'm through, bleeding for you" means it can never happened. Welp that's my five cents. |

I think Adia is just a random name and has no importance so YAY. I think this can be interpretted as a lesbian song. It can also be interpretted as all those above (and I doubt "there's no one left to finger" is a reference to sex.. ^ refer to LemonFreshPineSol) But everytime I hear this song, I always thought it was about a mother/daughter relationship. Please note I have NO idea about Sarah McLachlan or her life so yay. But it does sound like that to me. And you know, doesn't it just make the song MORE beautiful it can be interpretted so many ways? |

Bah, I've always thought of two people talking back and one's going to commit suicide or something. Blah. But songs like these confuse me. And the child dieing sounds like a good thought. But this song-though-when it says, "Am I very far now?" it kind of makes it sound VERY innocent. I wonder why in specific it's Blue cars? I believe Blue represents calmness and peace. So I guess it matches.. a bit? To gypsy - me too. I just looked it up a minute ago. :O Also, I think there's nothing wrong with the "her". Infact, I think it's better with her. I think it was just put in there because of some other stuff, but also counting it goes with the song tune more than "him". Try singing it with him. Sounds funky, ne? |

Lucycat and jc499 took the words out of my mouth. I always thought it was either about those two things. In a way, it can be interpreted both ways. And even if Micheal Stipe did say it wasn't about religion, after reading it, it can be interpreted that way. But in my opinion, I think it's about what lucycat or jc499 said. I do not think this song is about homosexuality or masturbating. It just seems plain silly. But in other words, this song is beautiful. |

It's pretty straightforward (and not as clueless as alot of songs leave you by them) but the guitar chords and sounds and Shirley Manson's vocals just put it all together. | |

To me, this song is about real love.. and how people mock you for it. In the first verse, he's talking to most possibly, other guys, who fake relationships just to screw a girl. Saying that their manipulations cut real people like him who are honest and the male kind down to size. The pre-chorus to me, sounds like how these men lie during relationships. How they're all, "oooh I love you!" but they really don't. The chorus sounds like he's saying, "Well, if you could only see the way she loves me, then maybe you'de understand why I feel this way about our love, and what I must do." As if he's sacrificing himself to her. Because that's what love is all about, and he's trying to explain to other guys. The second chorus, obviously, sounds like he's saying, "The road less traveled" .i.e. - true love and not faking relationships - shows happiness. And the dirt is about how you are insulted, but if you love somebody, you should never break up with them to gain acceptance. I basically have always thought this song was about how people make fun of other people just because they're in love, but that's just me. |

I don't really think this is about a relationship at all, but I'm probably wrong. To me it's interpreted as if someone has alot of talent, but they never try to get anywhere in life. They just keep slacking off, and never get anywhere in life. It sounds like he's singing it to a friend or another person, who might possibly want to have all his talent, and he's saying that they have way more talent than him, and that they're problem is they never try. "But you won't see me wasting the best thing I've ever had. " Meaning, he's not wasting his talent away. And "You won't hear me still you endear me now!..." The friend idolizes his talent, and he tells them they have plenty of talent too, yet they don't really listen, yet still endear him. "Over years spent tracing wondering how you left your track. Underwater breathing burns your lungs and breaks your back, And you could be waiting right here for a day that won't come..." The person just sits around, wondering how they got in such a bad position in life, depressed. When he says the Underwater breathing it reminds me of how it may take hard-work to become famous or get a really good job, but in the end, you won't be sitting around waiting for something to come to you. You got to go to it. Well, that's just my opinion. When I hear this song, I think of that. Yeh. And desperado, I don't know why they're unknown. ..They're really good. |

To be honest... I don't really think this song is nessecairily *sp?* about believing in God. It's just asking, if God was one of us, how would you react at first site? To me, when she says a slob, it makes me think of God as a person. And no one knows he is God. And they are rude to him, because they don't know. And it's like asking, seriously, if he was one of us, would you really praise him? Would you really believe him if he said he was God? Would you really treat him with respect, whether he was God or not? Would you really follow the rules of God? To me it's kind of about people who really aren't christians. Do they really follow it? And then it's also about wondering if you really saw God, if he was really one of us. To me most of it sounds like it's saying something about if God was one of us, that we wouldn't really notice. The second verse seems as if God really was one of us, that we might be scared to look if we knew it was God, because then we'de have to admit we were wrong. And the first, with the question, kind of reminds me of the second verse. Would you ask him a question? or would you be too scared that you were wrong and that your teachings in church were wrong? I've always been perplexed over this song. My rambling thoughts may of made no sense, but I tried to string them together. And also, What if God was one of us makes perfect sense. O_o And to Pepsican - Seriously. I don't believe in God ethier. But I think the fact that you just overlooked this song and automatically assume it was direct-Christian music is kind of weak on your part. |

I never thought of it being about a girl commiting suicide. To me it always sounded like a girl being murdered that he loved and it being unsolved. Thus - "The long broken arm of human law". Also, the domestic violence theory sounds correct too. Going from the domestic violence theory, it kind of makes sense. And the lyric of "She always had a pretty face" shows that just because someone is pretty and popular on the outside, tells nothing of their home life. Going from the suicide theory - it sounds like she wasted something very important. "It always seems such a waste". As if she was very talented, and had the ability to go far in life and wasted it. Either way, beautiful song. The end. |

I didn't bother reading all the comments but--- 1. It doesn't sound like it's about The Lord of the Rings. 2. TLOTR has existed way before LZ was even a band. It was written by JR Tolkien, in the early 1900s, and I think a bit before that, but I'm not sure. It's a book, for christ's sakes. Not just a movie. Geez. 3. I'm not a die-hard LZ fan, and I will admit I've only heard this song. Whether it's the best of their songs or not, it's beautiful. The end. 4. It's not about Teletubbies... 5. I doubt this song was written by somebdoy else. 6. It's rude to say "I know for a FACT it's about-- bla bla" because really, does anyone know? Songs have multiple meanings. Get some sense. Even if the artist does know what it means, there are tons of songs to be interpreted two or even more ways. It all depends on who you are. 7. ...And maybe LZ doesn't know the meaning themselves? You can't always say "The only one who knows the meaning is LZ!" because maybe they don't know ETHIER. Infact, alot of artists aren't sure what their own songs mean. I write alot of songs, and some of them I know what they mean, but some I'm totally clueless. 8. Everyone stop fighting over what it means. No one is sure. There. This place is to express your opinion, not to say you're right about something. Hear me? O-P-I-N-I-O-N. |
