I would really appreciate it if someone could offer their opinions on this song. I have hesitant pieces of the puzzle, but..

Okay, apparently a lot of us -didn't- rate this song. Very peculiar.. ::peers::

.. but, I must admit, the lyrics look pretty catchy. Time to go find it.

Vertical Horizon – Everything You Want Lyrics 22 years ago
No, this song isn't about God. I said it somewhere before, but any heartfelt song can be misinterpreted about God if you simply replace the "she" and "hers" and other feminine pronouns with "God" and "His" and "Your," et cetera.

Both basically the same thing. And the law applies in reverse. Songs with God that can be changed to be about women.

.. anywho. Yeah, I'd have to agree with liveurlife as well. This person is everything she wants, everything she needs, but it means nothing to her, and she doesn't know why. And it's strange, because she sees him, and she know how he feels, if only.. vaguely..

.. and the mention to the angels. A reference to HER love. The one she cannot have. The one she's constantly focusing on while ignoring the one that would obviously work.

Well, I'm not trying to simpliofy it--but rather make it so more people can more readily relate to it. ::chuckles:: I doubt the large majority of readers here can relate to being a nothing prostitute, but I'm sure many of the readers can relate to being brushed aside, being nothing, giving sex in hopes of more and getting nothing.

You still rule though.

An abused loved. From the perspective of the abused.

Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 22 years ago
"You bring me closer to God."

Let's see, how to interpret this song. The man is a user. The man is incomplete. He needs HER to live. Through her, he finds satisfaction of his power, his dominance, and his lust. Through her, he can vent his fears, his hate--he can let her "have my everything."

And when it's all done, she brings him closer to God..

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics 22 years ago
.. another beautiful song. There are four musical Gods out there; Trent is one of them. The other three are McLachlan, Alanis, and Maynard.

I don't really think this song relates to drug use. Yes, it does say 'tear a hole' with a needle--

[the needle tears a hole the old familiar sting try to kill it all away but I remember everything ]

--but I believe that, again, as usual, it's a metaphor for unwanted memories. You try to block them out because, at one point, they were so beautiful but now they're simply.. a painful reminder. Or, hell, not even beautiful. Maybe just painful. And you don't want to remember anymore, but you can't help yourself..

I agree with lorienmariene [this song is about self loathing] and primusboy [this song is about not being good enough.]

The reference to the empire of dirt, crown of shit; maybe things that were once beautiful, or at least valuable, but now worthless. You can have them all--they don't mean anything to me anymore.

And then there are the references to another person, someone I'm sure he was once close to, but who is now moving on with their life--but while they move on, he is "still right here."

A painful, painful song. In short: Maybe there was something beautiful in your life once, but someone tore it away from you, and destroyed it. Nothing matters anymore. All you have is the memory, and the hurt.

But if you had to do it all again, you would.

Interesting interpretation, Faust. Certainly, it lacks the heart of the personal, as I don't really think I've ever been in a situation quite like that..

.. but, on a different level, you could say that someone is giving themselves away physically in hopes they would be recognized emotionally--or, hell, recognized at all?

Could you say that?

Sarah McLachlan – Possession Lyrics 22 years ago
If one ignores the idea that Sarah wrote this song from the perspective of a stalker..

.. the song is even more beautiful. I prefer to believe that this song is an obsession song BY a female. You rarely hear those! And it's such a beautiful song. Placing all that trust and faith and hope in one person, so much that "my body aches to breathe your breath, your words keep me alive."

Life is so bitter. But you're that lamp in the dark that leads me.

Sarah McLachlan – Fear Lyrics 22 years ago
Time wounds all heels. This song simply elaborates on the concept. It's stated simply in [wind in time rapes the flower trembling on the vine]. Everything builds up, life drags you down farther and farther. Corruption.

But you find that escape in love.

[but I fear I have nothing to give, I have so much to lose here in this lonely place; tangled up in our embrace there's nothing I'd like better than to fall]

.. you're convinced that you are nothing, that you do have nothing to give, and you're so used to the emptiness and the depression that it's almost scary to give it up. But you want to. You want to "fall," simply give up all that pain and take solace in the arms of another.

This song kicks so much fucking ass. Turn off the lights, turn up the bass, and close your eyes.

Placebo – Every You Every Me Lyrics 22 years ago
This is one song you don't want to dedicate to someone you love, despite the seemingly adoring lyrics. This "sucker love" is infatuation mixed with lust, a kind of immature love you feel when you're desperate and alone..

You'd do anything for it [carve your name into my arm; instead of stressed, I lie here charmed] because you believe in it so much, even go as far to sacrifice yourself after a fight to make things better [i serve my head up on a plate; it's only comfort, calling late].

And maybe, maybe you know that this love is sick, paper-thin, and only here to make you feel better.. but you don't care, because you know this is all that could work [sucker love, a box I choose, no other box I choose to use - another love I would abuse].

The love you feel makes you feel better [my heart's a tart, your body's rent], fills you up, makes you feel alive again [all alone in space and time, there's nothing here but what here's mine, something borrowed, something blue].

It's a damn awesome song. But it's nothing to go dedicate to a lover.

A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 22 years ago
A friend of mine, Sasha, explained to my ex-girlfriend, Marianne, that this song was for her, that she expected too much from people (here I am expecting just a little too much from the wounded)..

However.

The song was written for her.

Everything in this song, it details our relationship. Despite everything I gave her, she couldn't see it, and I slowly became simply another face, another name "down among a million." Despite her plastered smile, I knew she was the tired, depressed child, "eyes of a fallen angel, eyes of a tragedy.." I saw through it all, to see her, only her.

She had beautiful eyes. And I hoped that maybe she would be able to see me, and see what I could give her, but I suppose that was expecting too much from a broken girl..

In short, this song details a failed relationship, a relationship with someone who isn't ready for it, wants something else, something.. less.

God Bless the Point of View.

Lifehouse – Somewhere In Between Lyrics 22 years ago
.. someone very special to me told me that this song detailed the pain of getting over someone. I don't know how she saw that, but if someone can elaborate, please tell me.. because it was the last straw for her in a very delicate relationship that ultimately collapsed..

To me, though, the song is about love. About a love so strong that you can't believe that you're "losing sleep over this." You pace, pace out of a fear that she's hurt (odd circumstances that week), and pace out of disbelief of yourself. That this love can't be this strong. Just give me a few hours, and maybe I can sort this out..

"'cause I'm waiting for tonight. Been waiting for tomorrow." You've been waiting forever, and to find it now? Is this real, or just a dream.. ?

Sara, I'm sorry that I hurt you..

Lifehouse – Everything Lyrics 22 years ago
Yes, I suppose the song does have a lot of vague Biblical references.

But, the funny thing about songs for God is that you can change the pronoun "He, Him, His," and change them to "She, Her, Her," and not have to change any lyric of the song..

.. and vice versa.

Maybe this song is about God. But, to me, it's the perfection I can find in the beauty of another human being. It also details the hesitation of falling into another relationship, despite the beauty that person can make you feel. You don't want to fall again, but "How can I stand here with you and not be moved by you?"

Tori Amos – 1,000 Oceans Lyrics 22 years ago
.. probably one of the more unappreciated of Tori's songs. This one, it's one of my favourites. It details a kind of love that you can feel for someone..

Basically, the unrequited love. You feel it so much, and they feel nothing at all--"and I would cry 1000 more if that's what it takes to sail you home.."

Self sacrifice.

Dave Matthews Band – Crash Into Me Lyrics 22 years ago
.. in response to gizelle369..

Yes, I did catch what you think are S&M references. "You've got your ball, you've got your chain, tied to me tighter, tie me up again.." .. and ".. tied up and twisted, the way I'd like to be.."

1) The former, as explained earlier, is a (what I also agree with, believe) reference to a previous relationship that he wants to be in again. The latter, I can interpret two ways.. well, three..

One, she's tied up. Probably not. Two, maybe a reference to clothing that she might've donned. Something sexy. Probably not. Three, she's modeling herself in front of a mirror. Maybe.

Or, hell, maybe it's poetic nonsense describing the glow of love? That's what I take "crash into me" as. I don't think someone is literally going to crash into me. Just that explosion of emotion and sensuality and passion.

Crash into me.

Basically, though, I see the song as a broken love that he wants to feel again.

I so want to play this song on my wedding night. The way the music builds up, it's so sexy..
