Bad Religion – Anxiety Lyrics 8 years ago
The part which I find more meaningful is:

What are we angry for?
We all need a common cure

I think it means that if we think about it there is really no need to be anxious all of the time. Most of us live way better than kings of old - we have Internet, luxuries, easy food and restaurants, movies, plenty of friends and even more potential friends... The reason why everyone is so angry is because we think it's each of us against the entire world - no wonder we're always anxious!

As the song says this world can be heaven or hell, it's all a matter of how you look at it:

It's a world of laughter hidden by this world of fear and torment

Of course you may be in a shitty position in a certain moment but if people and leaders would really sit down, talk things through and coordinate we could easily get everyone to work less, be more friendly, help each other... Unfortunately we're all so busy keeping ourselves busy and worried that no one has time for that or even worse, no one is willing to take up the responsibility.

@[SalmonGod:6495] I don't think it's written thinking of the elves, but you're spot on about the part of being the yesterday that has to take it's leave so the new today can take it's place.

@[haxxiy:6494] I wouldn't say that it's about sex in itself but more about a feeling that is very seductive, powerful and pleasurable - or, in other words, very sexual indeed.

I don't get why you had so many downvotes, all the other comments here are bullshit while you've at least made a good point about the theme.

Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 8 years ago
@[betweenlines91:5822] "Why are we doing this?" Because we are several billion monkeys in a piece of rock flying through deadly vacuum and radiation, around a giant ball of fire, around a infinitely more giant black hole. Even in our little planet life has been largely about war and suffering. It's easier to fool yourself than to look at the big picture.

@[MysticSonic:5821] People are not doomed to repeat their failures, at least not forever - it's just natural that they transcend their problems after a while. If you focus on making just a single step in the right direction everyday you can prevent yourself from falling back into old paths.

Jack Johnson – Losing Hope Lyrics 9 years ago
@[Rosalia326:2693] "Where do you buy friends like these is my question?" You can't and shouldn't buy friends. Relationships are hard and need to be worked on and it's hardest to work on them when you're feeling down but it's also perhaps the best moment to do it. Call you friend, ask how they're doing, what they've been up to, say that you would feel better if they could call back sometime to chat or meet up. Just be strong enough to pick up the phone and press the buttons, the rest will come to you. As Jack says: "hangin' on is easy When you've got a friend to call".

If you're really all alone (new town, friends moved away...) you can look up what is there to do in the nearby region. Believe me when I say you are not special at all: everywhere there are lonely people looking out for a good pal to hang out with, even people who seem to have many friends can feel utterly lonely in the crowd. Hobby clubs, pubs, parks... It can be hard work but if you give luck a chance you will eventually come across someone who needs a friend just as bad as you do.

Savatage – Hall Of The Mountain King Lyrics 9 years ago
The Hall of the Mountain King is a classical piece from an unknown composer. It is similar in tone ans since it is the same name it seems to a reference and inspiration for this song/album. It also reminds of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor

Iron Maiden – No More Lies Lyrics 10 years ago
He accepted death and the mistakes of his life. Reincarnation is a possibility to do things right next time, instead of holding false beliefs.

His friends are like him and even if young, it's too late now to go back and reform past mistakes. No regrets - since they only did what they thought was appropriate at the time - but also no hope for the future. He is the only who realizes this.

He warns us not to weave the same path: as he relates his thoughts we cannot plead ignorance like himself.

The refrain and title - "no more lies" - elude me. I can think of two opposite meanings:

1. "If I come back on a new incarnation, I will have no more of the same lies I convinced myself of until now." This seems to be on par with the rest of the lyrics.

2. The whole song is a lie, so 'no more lies' means to stop believing this reincarnation bullshit and make things right before you die - there is still time! The way Bruce sings sound like "One more life, one more chance? What a load of crap! Just take responsibility for your own life right now!"

Savatage – Edge Of Thorns Lyrics 10 years ago
Sounds like a failed relationship. When they were together the lover committed many small treasons and tried to cover them with half-hearted reasons. Together they let too many of them slip away.

She means well but is just misguided in her stage (her life) and so he had to end it even though he carries the strongest feelings for her. Ultimately he knows she carved her own grave by not taking proper care of her dreams and goals. He obviously still thinks a lot about her even as he screams he doesn't - what is meant is he just doesn't see her as a lover anymore.

Even on those summers they were together she was somehow too cold and because of this the dreams they once shared are now buried forever in snow.

Pink Floyd – Is There Anybody Out There? Lyrics 10 years ago
By this point the wall is already complete. Each brick on the wall before that was the suffering caused to Pink by someone else, and most of the time he was not even at fault - we don't see any hint of that here.

He even asks 'is there anybody out there', signifying he is entombed.

Pink Floyd – Hey You Lyrics 10 years ago
Although I can't agree that the song speaks about your case I do believe everything you described fits the song's general meaning.

On an unrelated note, it's pretty sick how the asylum mafia works out: a sane person put in there will find that staring at the window is pretty much the least boring thing to do and it's natural to try to escape a situation which is often, as done in practice, a crime against the law and more akin to kidnapping. But this kind of behavior is exactly whoever put you there needs to claim you are insane and prolong your stay for maximum profit!

You probably already thought this through, just wanted to show my support :)

Pink Floyd – One of My Turns Lyrics 10 years ago
This reminds me of something I read about schema psychotherapy: we often have self-fulfilling patterns. Pink might have one that drove her wife away and now has him both trying to compensate with a new girl and losing her at the same time.

And with each of these and other events a brick is added to the wall. Now even higher, it enforces a vicious cycle.

Pink Floyd – Mother Lyrics 10 years ago
It's not entirely her fault though, since her world probably was very dark, having lost her husband to war and being left alone to care for her single child. This could understandably make her protective of her son (Pink), which is the closest to his father she will ever have again and who seems to be her only close family.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics 10 years ago
I read 1984 and although I do think both it and Clockwork Orange (as mentioned by another replier) relate to the song, I believe that to be more about thematic and coincidence: the lyrics are actually discussing our own modern society, more specifically Roger Waters' childhood school.

Jack Johnson – No Good With Faces Lyrics 10 years ago
This is about being out of synch with modern life. If you are not on the same neurosis level most urban dwellers live in it gets hard to remember so many new different faces and names everyday. Even a handful of directions, turns and street names all at once can be said too fast for the relaxed mind to grasp.

Jack Johnson is a surfer: near the sea often there are lesser people, simpler street grids and more time. And at night you can see very well naturally due to moonlight.

Back in the city if a street lamp is broken, you are almost blind because all nearby artificial luminescence is blocking out the moonshine. So who broke the moonlight? We did Jack, we did it ourselves.

"I’m lost [ in the rush of urban pace ]
I’m too tired to try [ to keep up with this nonsense ]"

For a musically-opposite take on the theme try Supersonic by Bad Religion :)

This song is not seen by the eyes of someone on the streets, but from the Jester's tower, removed from all that troubling menagerie.

Bad Religion – One Thousand More Fools Lyrics 10 years ago
The obvious part of the song, as the title implies, is the multitude of fools living incredibly shallow and meaningless lives today, guided by whatever the mass suggestion they choose to fit in promises ("the lamb is on the way,", "better get down on your knees and pay"). And as millions there are today, a thousand more are born each day. Mankind sounds pretty hopeless!

But keeping with Bad Religion tradition of overwhelmingly deep meanings in less-than-two-minute songs, there seems to be more to it than meets the eye - what does it mean when your mind starts to stray?

M. Craft – I Got Nobody Waiting for Me Lyrics 11 years ago
Someone leaves his lover, sick of many things about him ("all of the hours you keep", "footsteps [...] dragging behind", "the cages we lock ourselves in", etc.), drunk with the newfound liberties. But ultimately, he doesn't like being alone.

This loneliness could be argued to actually be a longing for the ex-lover - something the author might find hard to admit, hence it wouldn't be clearly stated. If this is true, the whole song might be an attempt at convincing himself that he doesn't love this person.

Though it seems that the author was the one who actively broke up the relationship, there is no proof that it was not the other way around or mutual.

Siouxsie and the Banshees – Dear Prudence (The Beatles cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
Prudence is a feminine name, and this gives structure to the lyric, as, for example, a letter written to "Dear Prudence". But prudence as a word also means being careful.

Prudence is a virtue, but as with anything in excess, too much of it can be harmful. Extreme discretion may prevent you from living a healthy life. This is why the song carries a message of outwardness, as if directed too someone who is too cautious.

Pink Floyd – Eclipse Lyrics 11 years ago
I like your idea: even if the Sun is huge and always shining so bright, sometimes you might look up and find it not there, being eclipsed by the Moon. This means that sometimes you cannot understand the whole since there is some little thing in the way.

But then it would also mean that if you wait the Moon will move away, as it always does :) Don't procrastinate though, haven't you listened to Time?!

Pink Floyd – Brain Damage Lyrics 11 years ago
When I read your introductory rant about shallow interpretations I assumed one would follow. I am glad to be disappointed :)

But I do have another take on the dam metaphor, more closely related to Syd Barret: some of the 'lunatics' are people that awakened by drug use, but this can be abused, and if you awaken before the conditions are right ('the dam breaks open many years too soon') you might have no condition to use this knowledge and be effectively stuck in place ('there is no room upon the hill'). This would be enough for some to cross the line between being only a lunatic in society's eyes and actually slip into insanity.

And once society can say you are clinically insane they will intervene (raise the blade, rearrange til sane, lock the door and throw away the key). Once they take away your freedom they might even convince you that the voice inside your head is not yours.

Pink Floyd – Any Colour You Like Lyrics 11 years ago
Brilliant interpretation of an instrumental song! In the context of the album I believe this means that once you realize society's contradictions (Us and Them) you will abstract beliefs and ideologies - everything is it's own color but any color is good.

Pink Floyd – Time Lyrics 11 years ago
Great interpretation, but I disagree with the church part. When it's said the faithful kneel, no graves are implied. This might be instead the solution to the problem of lost time exposed by the rest of song: while one wastes it besides the fire, the religious devote their lives to something bigger.

Of course, Pink Floyd never meant to say the answer is to become a catholic monk, but maybe to have faith in your dreams.

Tool – Schism Lyrics 11 years ago
If this is about religion, then why all the references to "lovers" and - most importantly - to the number 2? If this indeed was about religion separating from an original unified source then we are discussing many (much more than two) religions that currently exists. This could easily be done lyrically and in the music video clip.

Anyway I gave a vote up due to the "relationship" interpretation, which so far I feel is correct :)

The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm surprised at how shallow are the interpretations here: all the deduction is done by reading only the title.

What about 'I met your children/What did you tell them?' and 'In my mind and in my car'? Specially when relating those to the title? Is this just a love story or is there some deeper meaning?

Maybe the gist is: a guy meets a diving-into-oblivion radio star he worshiped when younger and they have an affair. But still this explains very little, being only a over-viewing outline.
