I always connected bitter buffalo metaphor with this old Native American story I heard as child...about buffalo that would sacrifice themselves to the Gods by charging off cliffs. On this, I assumed that the song balanced the heart and brain's abilities to destroy eachother. The brain can be fried by heart's passion while the heart despairs (commits buffalo suicide) before the brain's sheer reason. |

This song reflects the way I feel if I sit in a room alone for a very very long time and lose track of time...the song is lilting, almost offbeat...i think it's about accepting something--a moment or a truth--for what it is, without trying to define it. The disagreement, "you're not listening or/i'm not saying it right" reflects his inability to express exactly how he feels. It's just intangible. Strange. |

This song is about this guy who escaped from a small town and remembers, regretfully, a gradeschool crush who didn't make it out...as a small town girl, I've ween SO MANY of my friends from kindergarden get pregnant, drop out of school, get arrested...those kinds of things. It's really sad to think how different our lives are, when we started out on the same page. |

I listened to this cd all the way back to the US (from France), away from friends and a boyfriend at the end of a year abroad...it's was sickening, sinking into that seat and crying in my throat..."plastic wings and plastic smiles" is just how the stewardesses responded--artificial concern. Nothing, not even "hopeful thoughts of soon returning" could console me. I guess the lyrics are poignant and powerful because I remember it so vividly... |
