Barenaked Ladies – Call And Answer Lyrics 21 years ago
I just found a bit ago that my long term girlfriend had cheated on me within the last year. The first verse of this song is exactly how I feel now. I decided to stay together with her, but ever since then, I haven't been able to be myself around her. We're just getting to the point where we can trust each other again. I decided to give her another chance, and "point [her] home". "It's time to rebuild".

Jack Johnson – It's All Understood Lyrics 22 years ago
When I first heard this song, my impression was that Jack was using sarcasm to point out that people have lost a personal connection with “God” or a higher being. Poking at the idea that people believe what their fellow man says rather than what they feel is right. I began to think he was singing about how some religions or people are only followed because others tell them that it is the way, but in the end “it’s almost always fiction”.

After several more weeks of listening to it, I started to see it in a completely new light. What if Jack wasn’t ripping on religion but was rather saying that no matter what we think, there is an ultimate truth? That’s what I think this song is about now, an ultimate truth. No matter how many different opinions there are on a topic, or belief… there IS an ultimate truth. Hence – “even if we don’t under stand… it’s all understood”.

If one correlates this to religion, it would be interpreted that there are many different beliefs, but only one is right. Which one? Who knows… but somewhere someone i.e. God knows the ultimate truth.

If one correlates this to the media, or a story, it’s would mean that everyone saw what happened slightly differently, but in the end there is only one truth. But we as humans don’t like the idea that what we believe or saw might not be the exact ultimate truth, so we “just believe”.
