Bad Religion – Boot Stamping on a Human Face Forever Lyrics 20 years ago
Hmm, my guess is this song is about the how empires come and go and how each one has left a scar on the face of the earth and mankind in their efforts to maintain their power. Every empire throughout history has foolishly believed that they are somehow different from the preceding empire and the certitude of their "difference" shared amongst its leaders meant[to them] that they'll last forever. Thats my interpretation.

Bad Religion – Give You Nothing Lyrics 20 years ago
I think what he might talking about is how superficial our society as whole has become. Wasting our time working for a boss that couldn't give two shits about your existence as long as you're helping the corporation maximize its profits.

"Look around and ask someone if you're alive,
You're a sidewalk cipher speaking prionic jive."

Spending most your time working breaking your back for someone else's gain prohibits an individual from spending his/her time doing something has gives meaning to their existence. This is why I think he says:

"I give you me, I give you nothing"

I have nothing of value or substance to justify my existence. Having put forth this idea he tells the listener : 'Ask yourself again "do I deserve much from them", no!' Live your life for yourself not for someone else's gain. You only live once. It's great social commentary.

Well thats my interpretation at least.

Bad Religion – Evangeline Lyrics 20 years ago
This "cuz" is nonsense. Lets rather focus our energy on more meaningful things like INTERPRETING this fucking song.

Some makeshift ideas of mine: Maybe this song talking about young love and the insecurities both sexes experience when first dealing with their emotions.

Actually I think my interpretation is pure shit and doesn't apply well to the lyrics. Hey, at least I tried.

Bad Religion – Live Again (The Fall of Man) Lyrics 20 years ago
This is a song about a notion held amongst all Christians: life in heaven after their death on earth. Now, Greg questions this notion:

"But what good is something if you can’t have it until you die?"

By this I think he's trying to make two points: Is it really worth it that you have to die first before you can have it? .The other point I think he's trying to make and this one is more subtle a one: How can you be so sure of this promise of eternal life in heaven if you can only experience it after you've died?

There's no way to proove there's a heaven. This idea is revealed in the pre-chorus:

"Drunk with the assertions they know they can’t defend..."

OK I could go more into this but I'm fucking lazy, but you get the idea. Talk amongst yourselves.

Bad Religion – Hooray for Me... Lyrics 20 years ago
The chorus exemplifies the theme of this song. The rest of the lyrics I feel aren't very strong. They go all over the place. Bad Religion themselves hate this song, but they love the music(the only reason why they decided to keep it on the Stranger than Fiction). I personally dont the lyrics either, love the chorus though. Madcappunk, I dont think this song is so much about doing the right thing than it is about doing whatever you want to do.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – Stir It Up Lyrics 20 years ago
Something I didn't clarify in my last post: This song is about two engaging in the art of making love.

"All you got to do is keep it in, baby
And stir it up, little darling, stir it up"

To put it bluntly, his erected penis is in her vagina
and she's trying to "stir it up" using his penis. She is mostly likely riding him because it would be very hard for a woman to "stir it up" if she were lying on her back.

"Your recipe, darling, is so tasty
And you sure can stir your pot"

The "pot" he is talking about here is referring to her vagina, and his cock is stirring it. My blunt language has taking all sexiness out of the song but I felt it was necessary to explain to all the imbeciles on here.

Zps2. Explain to me how them selling out "never really happened"? Of course they sold out, they wanted to make more money, wanted to be all over MTV, and wanted to become more popular. I mean they're on Sony(the third biggest media conglomerate on planet earth). You dont just magically end up on a label like that. Sony most likely came up to them and offered them a multimillionaire deal, they pooped their pants with excitement and complied. These guys are just a bunch of stupid clueless rich kids who never had any care for the punk rock ideals of self-responsibility and thinking for yourself.

Dead Kennedys – Kill The Poor Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is about the not only gentrification of American cities but also how private power perceives poor and homeless people: a superfluous population that stands in the way of profit making. It's a hilarious twisted little song that stills has strong relevance today, then again at point in history hasn't the rich been fucking the poor over?

Bad Religion – Epiphany Lyrics 20 years ago
As time goes by I have changed my mind about the meaning of this song.

I think the lyric line to remember is "The Fallacy of Epiphany" That'll be our guideline. He talks about how we human beings have often guided ourselves along the lines of epiphanies or as soowt put it "the sudden supposed realization or understanding of something, often religious," which in turn have lead us astray from "the painful truth of who we are". Now how does Mr. Graffin comes to this realization? Through an epiphany. This lyric line "It came to me" illuminates his own epiphany. So in other words he saw the fallacy of epiphanies through an epiphany. So according to his logic his epiphany will "fade to cold blue untruths" just like the others that came before his. Haha, leaves the listener in quite a mental quagmire. I guess the absolute truth is that there is no absolute truth.

Bad Religion – Social Suicide Lyrics 20 years ago
Correction: "There's a furnace set on high"

I think this song about the everyday struggles human beings tend to face to it comes to attaining some sense of truth or certainty in their lives. Now truth is a loaded word, so it could interpreted in numerous ways. There are many truths to be found, it just depends on the framework you're working in. What I think he's trying to say is even though you might be in the "right" framework you should rely on your own intelligence to make sense of your reality through your own experiences. Then again, I could be completely misinterpreting it. The lyrics are vague though, so one can interpret it in any one chooses to.

NOFX – Philthy Phil Philanthropist Lyrics 20 years ago
My favourite next to Freedom Like a Shopping Cart off Heavy Petting Zoo. This song I feel is pretty self-explanatory. The fundamental idea of the song is actually given to the listen in the first lyric line. I think he's talking the innate greed in America's economic system, and how its power over the public has lulled people to believing they "want what [they] dont need". I think this message is also perfectly exemplified in the chorus when he says "You've taken when you should've give away." Corporations' inherent greed has been instilled within the public conscience and now we too are takers instead of sharing our wealth with others. This notion of course stands in direct contrast of what it means to be a philanthropist, but of course anyone familiar with NOFX knows that this is just their typical humourous irony.

NOFX – 180 Degrees Lyrics 20 years ago
Simultaneously social commentary, and a little anarchistic propaganda, not that that is a bad thing. Its pretty much turning the world upside down, hence the 180 degrees line. The social commentary being that pervasive apathetic attitude that seems to have infected our society. The anarchistic propaganda being the turning the of current state of affairs upside down. In other words, where there once was vertically structured society with social hiearchies then now is a horizontally organized one. Yes, drkshadow03 I think most people see it your way.

I think he's talking about the overabundance of wealth and materials that seem to plague Southern California and how mercilessly people are competing with each other to attain it. Bad Religion – Infected Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the "unhealthy relationship" interpretation is very plausible, but what kind of relationship? A relationship between two humans or between a person and god? This song was written by Brett and i get the impression he's always had a love/hate relationship with God or the notion of God. I get the feeling sometimes he's doesnt know where he stands. Is he an Atheist? Agnostic? Does he believe?
I think his frustration from his uncertainty is illuminated when he says:
i want to tie you, crucify you,
kneel before you, revile your body,
you and me, we're made in heaven,
i want to take you, i want to break you,
supplicate you, are incurable,
i want to bathe you in holy water i want to kill you,

By saying this I think he desperately wants certainty. If only he could destroy God, or the notion of God then he'd be certain of himself, his existence...etc. This just one more interpretation we could put out on the table. Interpret it anyways you want to.

interesting interpretation wester. I like how you tried to find a different meaning/approach to the song, rather than the usual "this is about a relationship that went to hell" theme that everybody always seems to use. then again anything can work to interpret their songs because how skillfully it was written.

Bad Religion – Victory Lyrics 21 years ago
I think Greg is talking about how we like to consider ourselves modern and civilized, yet we still seem to be governed more on the animal part of our brain(50% of our brain is animal). What we should be doing is using the half of our brain that makes us so complex and distinguishes us from animals. Rather than making decisions based on our instincts we should be making them with our ability to reason, compromise, negotiate. Our animal instincts is " The evil[that] sits inside them torpid timing its escape." What he also trying to say is that we humans need to drop this "i want to be first, i want to win, I want to be victorious" attitude because it invokes destructive behaviour(our instincts).

"His helpless enemy was wounded, both hands raised with hope
He killed him without second thought, with brute force and a rope"

He could've reasoned with the guy, but NO he want to completely obliterate his enemy because of his hatred(animal instinct) for his enemy.

Bad Religion – Parallel Lyrics 21 years ago
What Greg is saying here is that we're all the same yet we choose not to accept this truth by "forging little plays of deception and pain". In other words, we build little soothing lies to make ourselves feel important, independent, and individualistic. parallel lines are two lines that coincide with each other but never cross each other. Greg is saying that this is a problem because we are deliberately keeping ourselves from connecting with other human beings because we want to be individuals. We could be so much better as a united people. another thing parallel lines also do is run in the same direction. Just like parallel lines we humans do too run in the same direction, we just dont seem to recognize this and is deprecating the advancement of the human race.

Bad Religion – Sorrow Lyrics 21 years ago
The song is loosely based on the story of Job. Bad Religion does this alot, they take stories out of the Bible that supposedly teach us lessons when in fact they actually paint a picture of human misery perpetuated by our belief in God. In this song he criticizing man's often zealous devotion to power, status and their beliefs. The problem is not that they have power or are of a certain faith or status, but how we wield them. Job was zealously devoted to God and this not only brought suffering to himself but others as well.

Bad Religion – Skyscraper Lyrics 21 years ago
Im sorry, Brett actually wrote this song. I actually have a more thorough meaning for this song. God didnt want humanity to finish because he felt that if we could accomplish this then we could do anything at all and that we wouldn't need his "guidance". Basically God was scared he lose his sense of authority of human kind, so he deliberately confused us "like a spolied little baby" and made us all speak different languages which eventually lead to discrimination and racism between people. So basically our "beautiful" God deliberately suppressed the advancement of the human race and then indirectly plagued the earth with racism and discrimination.

Bad Religion – Automatic Man Lyrics 21 years ago
yeah I was using American Jesus as an example because it is so lyrically rich and the theme not-so-obvious. it takes time to fully decipher most BR songs. you have to take the song apart and then analyze every part you've broken up. Then once you've come up with a potential answer for each part, that runs parallel with all the other parts you've taken apart can you put the song back together again. If it doesnt follow a logical path of thinking, then begin the whole procedure again. Its sounds more complicated than it is.

I think he's tlaking about the story of the tower of Babel. For those unfamiliar with the story, people came together and tried to build a tower that lead straight to heaven so that the people could be closer to God. God didnt want this, so while they were building he made everyone speak a different language so that they couldn't communicate with each other and finish the tower. What a great God, eh? That's what Greg is trying to say(in my opinion).

Bad Religion – The Answer Lyrics 21 years ago
Greg is talking about an aspect of history that always seems to repeat itself, thus forming a pattern. This pattern being everyone searching "the answer" to all the world's problem's, even if it isnt a valid answer, just something to immediately soothe their ears. This song is also a reminder that the problem's of this world will, most probably, never vanish and that no one truly has all the answers even though they might seem to. ex: politicians, the pope, religious leaders, ....

I've never been quite so happy
All I need to do is click on you
and we'll be joined
in the most soul-less way
And we'll never ruin each other's day
'cuz when I'm through I just click
and you just go away

This part is absolutely beautifully written. He is criticizing instant messaging and how people are actually more seperated today than ever before because of modern technology. Modern technology claims that it has brought the world closer than ever before, when in reality we're growing more apart from each other b/c we have this idea that a loved one is just a mouse-click away. In this song he his criticizing the inhumane attitude people have today towards communicating with other human beings and also that we shouldn't be so obsessed with our technology.

StupidPunkRocker, I agree with you 110%, but there is something I do need to put forth that I think is important. We all know we live in a capitilistic society with a capitilistic system, right. The system we live is based on puritan ideals and the puritan work-ethic is embedded in our system. We all more or less live a christian lifestyle purely because of the system we live. Not because we are christians ourselves, I am not a christian just to let you know. I just thought that was an important bit of information to put forward.

Bad Religion – Epiphany Lyrics 21 years ago
Very well done EVMS. After reading your description I discarded my previous interpretations of what this song means. My was more generalized. I thought this song to be about the day we a person realizes that everything he/she have been brought up to be the absolute truth is in fact just manufactured truth. By "manufactured truth" I'm referring to public consensus, in other words, if society as a whole believes something to be true then it becomes truth. So my creating consensus we're only inadvertently blocking ourselves from free-thinking, in other words(like EVMS has said before) loss of identity.
