Conor Oberst – Danny Callahan Lyrics 15 years ago
maybe he based it on a child with cancer, but I'm not sure about the making up the name
. a child called daniel callahan was victim of doctor's malpractice and ended up paralysed by his polio vaccination.there's a bunch of legal/medical documents on the net about it.

well I always had the feeling that it was written by nick for maybe andy, but it's not a gay song whatever that means. it's a song that can apply to any kind of love relationship.

Neko Case – Pretty Girls Lyrics 17 years ago
I think is about calendar girls, pin-ups, and how their humanity is lost in the perception of the big public.

But there's millions to count you and keep you

I recently realized this line could refer to collecting pin-ups photos or playboy centerfolds.

and also:

Don't let them tell you you're nothing
'Cause you'll change the world pretty girls

could be a reference to those girls seen only as sexual objects but that end up being a symbol of a whole decade or generation.

Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics 17 years ago
conor actually said (on a lazy-I interview) he didn't write that song as sarcastic but to soothe himself with the thought that everything has a place; oh well, i still like my interpretation. after all i'm comforted by songs about the apocalypse and shit, so who am I to deny that soothing qualities of this.

The Faint – I Disappear Lyrics 17 years ago
voodoo possession again.
i guess that the effects might be similar to drugs or psychosis also, so it's not completely wrong.
anyway this is a nice male parallel to orenda's bloodline.

Orenda Fink – Blind Asylum Lyrics 17 years ago
this is about john merrick, the elephant man.

Orenda Fink – Bloodline Lyrics 17 years ago
it's about voodoo possession. being possessed by the spiritis of ancestors with a dark past of slavery and/or incest, or simply seeing the possession as dark and devilish and similar to rape, but in the end accepting it and letting go. the line "If I catch you breathing" it's sung in a completely different voice: I believe that's the spirit talking.

see also the faint's i disappear: same subject.

Bright Eyes – Lime Tree Lyrics 17 years ago
maybe i'm a bit morbid but the last verse seems to be about death and the acceptance of it. not like suicide, just the story of a soul who accepts to die.

I took off my shoes and walked into the woods
I felt lost and found with every step I took

taking off his shoes means letting go of material reality, walking into the woods into the unknown realm beyond life, feeling lost is the fear and pain that comes with dying, and feeling found when you finally let go and die peacefully.

i'm not sure if i get this one. it seems to be about some kind of magdalen/saint mary of egypt type of figure?

Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics 17 years ago
this seems to be about the cycle of death, life and maybe reincarnation. the brakeman=death I guess.

anyway probably one of the best songs out of cassadaga.

Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics 17 years ago
i always thought it was a sarcastic song about the status-quo. basically all those things that belong somewhere only do because that's what we're taught to believe. so he basically feels depressed because that's how people suppose he has to be. no use in fighting.

and yeah there are some lines that are just there for rhyming purposes like the casserole one lol. still and all great song.

Tilly and the Wall – Rainbows in the Dark Lyrics 17 years ago
it seems to be about someone who had an hard life, growing up poor, maybe in the middle of racial issues as well, married an abusing and cheating man...but she still can see all the beauty in life and that you have to go with the flow.

it reminds me of edgar lee masters' lucinda matlock, in a way.

Tilly and the Wall – The Freest Man Lyrics 17 years ago
i usually get annoyed when someone says that any song written by a friend of conor is about conor. but this one...either is about him or at least about some character sharing most of his traits.

too many things in common to be a coincidence.

Tilly and the Wall – Nights of the Living Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
bodishmosherson , i'm not sure how old you are but i'm 27 and this song to me sounds really sweet and nostalgic. if i had heard it at 17 i would have thought it was rebellious and exciting, different feelings for different ages like you said, but i do not see any sarcasm or contempt for anyone in it.

submissions
Tilly and the Wall – Bessa Lyrics 18 years ago
actually all the hostility towards conor baffles me way more than the idolizing. i can see why people idolize him, I do too because I think he's an amazing songwriter and performer. best of our (as in mine and his) generation for sure.
But I just don't know how his talent automatically makes him the object of every fucking song ever written.

well since it was written by kianna (I think?) and I doubt she ever dated conor, it's not. i could see if it was a neely's song.

Tilly and the Wall – Nights of the Living Dead Lyrics 19 years ago
i don't think it's satirical. I think it's nostalgic. If you sing such things when you're 16 it's one thing but if you do it when you're in your mid to late 20's it sounds really different. It's a nice song. I think that to appreciate both the naive and rebellious quality of the lyrics you have to have grown up a bit. it makes me smile.

Bright Eyes – Easy/Lucky/Free Lyrics 19 years ago
hmm, lost in thought, we have a very different idea of what depressing means.
depressing bright eyes song: amy in the white coat. that's DEPRESSING. no way out=depressing. this song is *all* about a way out.
If you mean it's dark, and moving and sad, then you're right, but it's the very opposite of depressing. Singing about negative things and death is not always depressing.
I AM obsessed with death and I have clinical depression and no, this isn't depressing at all. (but maybe I don't find depressing because I have depression, dunno).

submissions
Bright Eyes – Easy/Lucky/Free Lyrics 19 years ago
best song of the whole album. and one of my favorite bright eyes songs ever. his voice is pretty good on this one.
If you think this song is depressing you're missing the whole point. Sure it is about death. Sure it is about the end of the world, but it's a really positive song. Everything ends, and that's not depressing. In the end it's the best and only thing it can happen. Such beautiful words to accompany a truth that is
In a way it's the upside down version of no lies just love. One it's about choosing life and this one it's about accepting death as the best thing, but they both have an uplifiting quality.
It makes me smile. And cry.
It doesn't have to do with death as in suicide or death that is chosen as a way out and an escape from problem. it's a song about death as the most natural ending of our lives.
also, am I hearing things or in the end he keps singing nothing nothing nothing and then he sings everything in the end? that would be so beautiful if he did.

Bright Eyes – Karat Diamond Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is quite nice, but does anyone else think it sounds like a paint-by-numbers bright eyes song? The first time I've seen the lyrics I thought it was someone making fun of Conor's style of writing and typical themes.

maria said in an interview that this album represents her life, so I guess it's safe to link her songs with things from her life. this one seems to be about a long-distance relationship, probably the one she had (or still has) with Conor.

Elliott Smith – Division Day Lyrics 19 years ago
now, i'm not the kind of person that thinks that *every* single song written by Elliott is either about drugs or suicide. But this one makes me think of suicide, and that's my intepretation of it. Nothing to do with supposed biographical facts, it's just sounds like a suicide songs. The upbeat melody sort of confirms it, it's like the character in the song leads a shitty life until he comes to the decision
So it's dark but uplifting in a twisted way.
I'm not sure if there's some particular meaning to the words Division Day, like if it's something like a weird holiday I don't know about cos I'm not American, but for me I have always seen it like the day of your death, when your soul and body go separate ways.
Maybe that's just bullshit, but I like my intepretation.

well, we already settled it on the SCWB no hard feelings.

when I think mind blowing I think shane macgowan, elliott smith, ryan adams, conor oberst. the rest is just very good, or good or ok to me.
but mindblowing for me means these 4 people. I can't explain why. well I can explain why, but these are things *I* see. and there are things I learned after. The first time I've heard them I was blown away. and I still am. and I will always be.

it's really good and mature from your part to say you were too harsh. You were. I think that talking about Conor is not irrelevant, I wouldn't have any problem talking about Tim in a Conor thread. it makes very much sense, seeing that they're friends and get inspired by each other a lot. and after all I'm not the one obsessed with Conor who thinks that every single song written is about him! :P

but as I said we already talked on the SCWB. so it's fine no problem.

Bright Eyes – Oh, You Are the Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place Lyrics 19 years ago
it sounds too sweet or romantic to be about drugs.
and

I sing and drink and sleep on floors
and try hard not to be annoyed
by all these people worrying about me
so when I'm suffering through some awful drive
you occasionally cross my mind
it's my hidden hope that you are still among them
well are you?

that's a person he's talking about.

but then I thought that entry way was about a girl and it is about his dad. but I still do think that this song is about a person. probably a girl, sure. not a "thing".
the love he talks about in this song is very pure, not the kind of love you can link to an addiction IMHO. You can write a song about drugs as a love song, but it won't be the kind of love hinted there. Maybe more passionate and absolute, but less sweet and pure.
and since when you have drugs names on a tombstone? or it is a metaphorical line for you?
for me it means that he desires his love for this girl to continue for his whole life, marry her etc...

just my opinion.

the way he connects the personal and the political is stunning.

these lines
"Well I guess we all fit into your slogan in that fast food marquee
Red-blooded white skinned
Oh and the blues
Oh in the blues
I got the blues

are the way to connect. Not only he does talk about personal and political troubles, but he links them perfectly.

Bright Eyes – Sunrise, Sunset Lyrics 19 years ago
I disagree.
he's very much crafted in his art. he's emotional, but there's a work behind it. I think that think about his songs in a lucid and detached way ENHANCES emotion.
There are actually 3 types of art, not two. "emotional" art which is like the kind of "expressive" art you can find in high schoolers poems. The mental/intellectual art you find in well...intellectuals. people who can't connect their emotions to their use of symbols. and then you have Art with the capital A, which is the perfect connection between mind and heart.
I think that only experiencing the emotional side makes everything more shallow, also because THINKING about it makes it more emotional. it takes it to another level. A level where the mood becomes feeling, and the pleasure becomes catharsis.
so think and think and think about the songs. It's not going to ruin them. it's going to make them better.
These are indeed words you have to think about, it's just that you have to think with your heart and feel with your brain.

I was a bit harsh last night.
I still think that the best way to deal with someone you disagree with it's not calling them groupies, though,

so I apologize for some things I've said, i I hurt you somehow, I hate hurting people, but it would be nice to have an apology too.
I think I would have the right to post here even if I HATED TIm Kasher (instead I like him, guess what?), if I was able not to offend and explain my points. I am, so I'm gonna stay here and express my opinion.

another great song. a waltz. sometimes I think that he should quit cursive (just joking :P) and even the good life (double joking :P), and start playing tom waits-ish cabaret music with accordions.
that's what I see in him, the potential.

But maybe I'm just a waltz-holic.
