I also first heard this song on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I think the song is very fitting to the episode and certainly to the character Drusilla. She's beautiful but evil and she knows what she does is wrong but doesn't care at all. However I think the vampires in this song are merely a metaphor for prostitutes. I mean the word "concubine" is actually used, and if you read the lyrics it fits quite well.. i'm not sure though. It might not be that, I just think that vampires and prostitution go quite well together, like in the episodes before Riley left |

well it does mentioning remembering the subject of the song being a child young enough to be painting sunflowers.. so i would assume it was about somones son / daughter, doesn't have to be his own though.. i mean it could be from another persons perspective, or fearing what his daughter might become, or even about a niece or nephew.. |

well i agree with what you think the song is about, but when i first heard it i thought it might be about religion. It talks about a book, and says she needs to make a few small repairs. what if the book is the bible, and she needs to make a few small repairs (ie perhaps take out the do not kill commandment) with a metaphorical box of tools. just a thought. it also says she doesn't believe in transcendence. |

well i dunno... i come from england and the whole situation seems to be so different. when i watch american high school programmes it just seems so ridiculous. I mean do people REALLY act like that or is it a stereotype? Well anyway, if those people do indeed exist, i don't like them.
I would say that most of my friends are pretty popular, but they in no way fit into any of those stereotypes. I mean they just have.. dominance i guess, they could actually go ot a new school and be able to say "we're going to take this place over" but they wouldn't be sports players / cheerleaders / shallow in any way. i'm nothing like as popular as they are, but i don't have any desire to be really. i don't think the thing that matters if popularity, i think that what this song gets mixed up is popularity and shallowness.. although from what i've seen of america (which okay, isn't much, so i'll refrain from judgement) seem to go hand in hand.
what stuns me about america is that the popular people aren't actually as much clones as most people in my school. i go to an inner city school in london and every single person save about ... well in a school of 2000 i'd say about 50, like rap music and wear nike tracksuit bottoms, tops, everything. but they aren't popular, they're just accepted.
so i confess, after a long rant, i'm still not sure what i was trying to say in the first place, and i don't really understand. but the song's great and could be used to make a mockery out of lots of people in my school.. although i tend to use other things.. |

well i downloaded this song because my friend said "you'll like it! it's about drugs!" so i downloaded it even though i in no way like pop music, and realised that not only was the music shit, but also it wasn't about drugs at all. the key phrase is "just like" that's a simile kids. it means that she's comparing a person to a pill. i know a lot of you have in fact already realised this, but i'm just informing the brain dead amongst you. as for "losing her bad girl edge" 1. i don't give a fuck, and 2. i think anybody who creates an image out of being a "badgirl" is a complete poser. i mean it's what every musician wants, from kurt cobain, to elvis presley, to britney spears, to eminem. they all want people to think that even though they're "bad" in their music they're a nice person really. so they've got a tough image but they're really a human. i just think it's so stupid.. actually, i remove kurt cobian from that... (he was stupid in other ways)... but i dunno... most modern rock bands.. anyway, i'm done ranting |

i wasn't going to say anything, because the standard response when you post something about a song you don't like is "what you on this message board for then?" well i'm on this message board for a laugh, but i just have to say, that if you want to listen to something meaningful, why don't you listen to something meaningful? tonnes of bands write about this stuff and they do it a lot better - to be honest i don't like this stuff, i've had it up to here (high gesture) with songs about love and relationships, it just gets so boring, in fact a box car racer song sums up why i don't like them (even though it is one itself) "in every single letter, and in every single word, there will be a hidden message about a boy who loves a girl" but anyhow, bands with lyrics with some meaning aren't actually all that hard to find. sorry. i just think it's really sad that anybody finds any of avrils lyrics meaningful (with maybe the exception of anything but ordinary, because that pretty much sums up what the average adolescent feels about life, even though it is stupid, and it would be better if she was challenging it rather than agreeing) |

yeah, i actually agree with spydermunkie. excpet i wouldn't go as far as mentally ill. "instability bordering on insanity" would be my descrption. and yeah.. i don't know about the falling in love, i mean it's not as if he even talks about her in a lovey way, it's just kinda like she's adopted him and he's trying to look after her.
and by the way, i just had to say this, but 90% of you are very sad. identifying with a song is okay, but it's just so sad to say "whenever i listen to this song i think of *insert anecdote*" and act like the song was written for you, about you, and like you are the sole identifyer of it. cause that's just crap. it's like on any of these message boards somone (most likely more than one person) thinks that their comment is a billion times better and more relevent just because they've been through some of the thigns in the song. |

yeah... i dunno, "you said "I don't want ever to be brainwashed" is the kind of thing i say all the time, because i'm so scared of brainwash, but i get the impression that this friend of hers is pretty damn smart.. too smart, and they seem to see deeper into the world, the end result making them suicidal (i'm very tired, so sorry if i babble) anyway, i don't know, when i listen to this song i always think of it being the fear of brainwash and indoctrination by society making us conform that makes this friend want to kill him/her self. um... what am i getting at... oh yeha, a lot of what alanis says as a response implies that he/she cannot know that they will end up brainwashed "if we were our futures", "if we were our culture" (what they fear they will become) and "if we were our nametags" (what people think they are) but the fact is that they are not that and therefore shouldn't kill themself, and i'm really sorry for going on, but if you're here you probably haven't got anythign better to do than read this anyway. by the way do you get the impression that this frined is male or female? cause i definately get the impression that he/she is male for some reason - maybe cause most my friends are male.. or my good ones anyway |
